  • The mechanism of the blowhole and the pit formation in lap-jointed fillet CO₂ arc welds of Zn-coated steel sheet was established by the direct observation of the gas behavior in the molten pool with the high speed camera system. Main conclusions obtained are as follows1) Some blowholes were formed by incomplete back-filling to the pits at the last stage of the solidification. This type of blowhole was formed through four stages of gas in the molten pool, incubation, explosion, back-filling and completion of back-filling stage.2) Most of the pits was back-filled at the last stage of their formation. • Many parameters influence the frictional behavior of steel sheet during stamping. The contact pressure between a die and a sheet during stamping is one of them. Thus, this parameter is investigated for high strength steel (HSS) sheets, which are widely used for auto body panels due to their potential for weight reduction. Since HSS extend the limits of contact pressure for mild steel, the effect of this parameter on friction cannot be ignored. To investigate the influence of contact pressure on the frictional behavior of steel sheets, a flat type of friction test was conducted on three different steel sheets under various contact pressures. For bare steel sheets, the curve representing the relationship between contact pressure and friction coefficient exhibits a U shape. Coated steel sheets show a similar tendency except at low contact pressure. For these materials, when the contact pressure is very low, the friction coefficient slightly increases with pressure before it starts to decrease. The test results show that the effect of contact pressure on frictional behavior of steel sheet is not negligible even for contact pressures that are lower than the strength of HSS sheet.

  • Corrosion behaviour of water intake gate steel structures with different protective measures was investigated. Five material alternatives were taken for investigation, including: imported and recycled stainless steel, carbon steel with hot zinc spraying, painting and composite coatings. Results of corrosion rate for carbon steel, SUS 304, hot zinc spray coats in three water systems of Mekong river basin (saline, blackish and fresh) were also presented. Corrosion rate of carbon steel decreased with decreasing salinity in the investigated water environments. Meanwhile, these values for zinc coated steel, behaved by another way. Environmental data for these systems were filed and discussed in relation with corrosion characteristics. Method of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was applied in materials selection for water intake gate construction. From point of Life Cycle Cost (LCA) the following ranking was obtained: Zinc sprayed steel < Recycled stainless steel < Composite coated steel < Painting steel < SUS 304 From investigated results, hot zinc spray coating has been applied as protective measure for steel structures of water intake systems in Mekong river basin.

  • Hot press forming allows geometrically complicated parts to be formed from sheet and the rapid cooling hardens them to extremely high strength. The main purpose of this research is to characterize Al coated layer in Al coated boron steel during hot press forming. For the hot press hardening experiment, test specimens were heated up to $810{\sim}930^{\circ}C$ and held for 3, 6 and 9 minutes, respectively. And then, some specimens were press hardened and others were air-cooled without any pressing for the comparison purpose. Al coated layer shows four distinct micro-structural regions of interest; diffusion zone, Al-Fe zone(I) low-Al zone(LAZ) and Al-Fe zone(II). Band-like LAZ is clearly shown at temperature ranges of $810{\sim}870^{\circ}C$ and sparsely dispersed at temperature higher than 900oC. The micro-cracking behavior in the Al coated layer during forming were also analyzed by bending and deep drawing tests. The strain concentration in softer LAZ is found to be closely related with micro-cracking and exfoliation in coated layer during forming.

  • In the present day, new performances are demanded for automobile body steel sheet for example, light weight, durability, resistance corrosion and environmental protection. For an improvement of resistance corrosion, European automobile companies developed pre-sealed steel in 1990's. Pre-sealed steel have organic coated layer upper zinc coated layer. Evaluating a resistance spot weldability of pre-sealed steel plate is important because resistance spot welding is used mainly in automobile body joining process. In this study, evaluating a weldability of pre-sealed steel plate was carried out using lobe diagram, dynamic resistance and high-speed image. Usually, Pre-sealed steel has poor weldability than GA steel's. To improve a weldability of pre-sealed steel sheet, pre-current was applied to welding process. Pre-current is applied prior to base-current. In conclusion, the weldability of pre-sealed steel has been improved than GA steel's by applying pre-current.

  • A stainless steel that contains aggressive negative ion was known to decrease the corrosion resistance. Stainless steel with super corrosion resistance was developed for improvement of corrosion resistance. Super duplex stainless steel is widely used under sever environment because of good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Also, Super duplex stainless steel has long life in severe environments by showing the enough strength and corrosion resistance. But duplex stainless steel is not stabilized compared to austenite stainless steel in corrosion resistance. In this study, corrosion characteristic were investigated to super duplex stainless steel with additive 0.2% nitrogen with $SiO_2$ thin films coated or no coated by sol-gel method in 3.5% NaCl. From test results, corrosion current density in the heat-treated specimen for ${\sigma}$ phase precipitation was higher than that of different heat-treated specimen. Also, $SiO_2$ colloidal-coated specimen had not occurred almost corrosion.

  • In this study, the effects of oxide layer formed on the contact parts of TiN coated ball and steel disk in sliding are investigated. Also wear mechanism to from the oxide layer and the characteristics of the oxide layer formation are investigated. AISI 52100 steel ball is used for the substrate of coated ball specimens. Two types of coated ball specimens were prepared by depositing TiN coating with 1 and 4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in coating thickness. AISI 1045 steel is used for the disk type counter-body. To investigate the effect of oxide layer on the contact parts of the two materials, the tests were performed both in air for forming oxide layer on the contact parts and in nitrogen environment to avoid oxidation. And to study the effects of surface roughness of counter-body, TiN coating thickness and contact load of sliding test on the characteristics of oxide layer formation on counter-body, various tests were carried out. From the results, the friction characteristics between the two materials was predominated by iron oxide layer that formed on wear track on counter-body and this layer caused the high friction. And the formation rate of the oxide layer on wear track increased as the real contact area between the two materials increased as the contact load increased, the TiN coating thickness decreased and the surface of counter-body smoothened.

  • The objective of this study is to develop an optimal drawing die for the clad wire drawing process. Cu-clad wire, which has the advantages of the high strength of a steel core and the electro-conductivity, corrosion resistance of a copper layer, is widely being used in the field of the telecommunications, electric-electronic and military technology industries. It is important to obtain uniformly coated rate when producing clad wires. Drawing process of clad wire will be influenced on damage and coated rate of core and sleeve for process variables such as semi-die angle and reduction in area. Therefore, in this study, the finite-element result obtained in this study was analyzed to the effect of the various forming parameters, which included the semi-die angle and reduction in area. The coated rate will be predicted with observation of copper coated rate variation according to total reduction in area and the optimal pass schedule will be set up through proper reduction in area and semi-die angle variation.

  • To ceramic film, $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$, coated on pure Fe and stainless steel(SUS41O) by RF magnetron sputtering, the adherence between mm and substarte was studied. The adherence index (${\chi}$) was determined by the measure of micro hardness test. Also, the corrosion resistance on oxide coatings was studied using electrochemical measurement. The main results obtained are as the following: 1) In the micro-hardness test, with $1{\mu}m$ thickness mm, it has only one the value of ${\chi}$. Above $2{\mu}$thickness fIlm, however, get another value of ${\chi}$as the cracks in fIlm. 2) The oxide fIlm adhere well on the mild materials such as pure steel than high intensity materials like stainless. 3) Alumina($Al_2O_3$) coated materials have better corrosion resistance than silica($SiO_2$)coated materials
