Silicon carbide-carbon fiber composites have been prepared by partially Infiltrating porous carbon fiber composites with liquid silicon at a reaction temperature of $1670^{\circ}C$. Reaction between molten silicon and the fiber preform yielded silicon carbide-carbon fiber composites composed of aggregates of loosely bonded SiC crystallites of about 10$\mu\textrm{m}$ in size and preserved the appearance of a fiber. In addition, the SiC/C fiber composites had carbon fibers coated with a dense layer consisted of SiC particles of sizes smaller than 1$\mu\textrm{m}$. The physical and mechanical properties of SiC/C fiber composites were discussed in terms of infiltrated pore volume fraction of carbon preform occupied by liquid silicon at the beginning of reaction. Lower bending strength of the SiC/C fiber composites which had a heterogeneous structure in nature, was attributed to the disruption of geometric configuration of the original carbon fiber preform and the formation of the fibrous aggregates of the loosely bonded coarse SiC particles produced by solution-precipitation mechanism.
Bending fracture strength test and impact strength test were made for VC coated die steels treated by immersing in molten borax bath and for hardened steels which were quenched and tempered, in order to clarify the effect of VC coating at $1000^{\circ}C$. The material used in this investigation was representative cold and hot work die steels STD11, STD61. The results obtained are as follows. 1) The bending fracture strength of VC coated die steel (STD11, STD61) was lessened with increasing the thickness of the VC coated layer. 2) With increasing the immersing time (imcreasing the thickness of the VC coated layer) the maximum hardness was obtained at 480 minutes holding, after that holding time hardness was decreased. 3) The impact strength of the VC coated die steel was not decreased. In the casse of STD11, it was higher than that of the quenched condition especially at low tempering temperature, and vice versa at high tempering temperature. However in the case of STD61 shows the result to the contrary.

This paper investigated into process characteristics of AlTiN coated layers for machining to the direction of upper and lower in plastic mold material (KP-4) with the cemented carbide ball endmill with the diameter of 8mm coated AlTiN layers (1~4) step by step using machining center. The material used in experiments was KP-4 that was machined by three types of inclined angles; $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ As estimated mechanical properties of AlTiN coated layers, it was shown the most result in the condition of three layered coating that the coating that the coating depth, the hardness of the coated layer and the surface roughness of the coated layer were $13{\mu}m$, Hv 3027.3 and $0.042{\mu}m$, respectively. The cutting component was better at the condition of upper direction than that of lower direction in all experimental conditions and indicated to be less which the bigger angle of the material was increased the effective diameter of the tool.

Tungsten coatings on the graphite (CX-2320) were successfully deposited using the vacuum plasma spraying (VPS) method. An optimum coating procedure was developed and coating thicknesses of $409{\mu}m$ (without an interlayer) and $378{\mu}m$ (with an interlayer) were obtained with no cracks and no signs of delamination. The mechanical characteristics and microstructure of the tungsten coating layers were investigated using a Vickers hardness tester, FE-SEM, EDS, and XRD. The effect of a titanium interlayer on the properties of the tungsten coating was investigated. It was shown that the titanium interlayer prevented the diffusion of carbon to the tungsten layer, thereby suppressing the formation of tungsten carbide. Vickers hardness data yielded values that were 62.5 ~ 80.46% of those for bulk tungsten, indicating that tungsten coatings on graphite can be utilized as a plasma-facing material. High heat flux tests were performed by using thermal plasma with a maximum flux of $10MW/^2$. Vickers hardness after the heat flux test is performed to see a change in the mechanical properties. The formationof a tungsten carbide and the effect of the titanium interlayer for the diffusion barrier are investigated by using energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS).

High speed ball end milling is attracting interest in the aerospace industry for the machining of complex 31) airfoil surfaces in nickel based superalloys, Experimental work is detailed on the effect of cutter orientation on tool life, cutting forces, chip formation, specific force and workpiece surface roughness, when high speed ball end milling nickel based supperalloy(lnconel 718). Dry cutting was performed using 8min diameter solid carbide cutters coated with either TiA1N or CrN for the workpiece mounted at an angle of 45˚ from the cutter axis. A horizontal downwards cutting orientation provided the best tool life with cut lengths~50% longer than for all other directions. Evaluation of cutting forces and associated spectrum analysis of results indicated that cutters employed in a horizontal downwards direction produced the least vibration.

Thin films (< 30 nm) of titanium carbide (TiC) are coated on carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which are directly grown on nano-sized ($\sim$ 500 nm in diameter) conical-type tungsten (W) tips, by employing an inductively coupled plasma-chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD) technique. Any modification in structural properties (such as length to diameter ratio, crystal quality, and growth behavior) of CNTs due to TiC-coating has been monitored by using high-resolution TEM, field-emission SEM, and Raman spectroscopy. Driving voltage for obtaining the same level of emission current in CNTs-emitter is significantly reduced by TiC-coating. It is also worthy of being noted that the degradation of emission current due to prolonged operation (up to 30 h) is remarkably suppressed by TiC-coating.

Interrupted cutting has different cutting characteristics compared with continuous cutting. In interrupted cutting, the workpiece has a groove that regularly impacts the cutting tool and workpiece. Therefore, tool damage occurs rapidly, and this increases the cutting force and surface roughness. In this study, we performed interrupted cutting of carbon steel for machine structure (SM45C) using a coated carbide tool (TT7100). To predict the cutting force, we analyzed the experimental results with a regression analysis. The results were as follows: We confirmed that the factors affecting the principal force and radial force were cutting speed, depth of cut, and feed rate. From the multi-regression analysis, we deduced regression equations, and their coefficients of determination were 89.6, 89.27, and 28.27 for the principal, radial, and feed forces, respectively. This means that the regression equations were significant for the principal and radial forces but not for the feed force.
The effect of vacuum heat treatment in the thermal sprayed ceramics coating on a capstan by either high velocity oxygen fuel(HVOF) or plasma thermal spray process was investigated. The coating materials applied on the capstan were tungsten and chrome carbides. In order to characterize the interface between coating layer and bare materials, hardness, adhesion strength, X-ray diffraction(XRD) and microstructural analysis are conducted. The adhesion strength of the carbide coated materials by HVOF process is over 500MPa compared to those of plasma coating process is 230MPa. In case of the carbide coated materials by HVOF process, the adhesion strength is increased to 15MPa and the porosity is reduced under 5% by vacuum heat treatment for 5 hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. The XRD results reveal that the increasement is believed due to the phase stabilization of metastable $Cr_3C_2$ phase to stable $Cr_{23}C_6$ phase.

The ultra-fine tungsten carbide(WC) powders have been actively used in the cemented carbides industry, because they have excellent mechanical properties such as high hardness, strength, and toughness. In this study, ultra-fine WC-Co alloys powders have been fabricated by thermochemical and thermomechanical process such as spray conversion process or high energy ball milling. The non-coated end-mill which is made of ultra-fine tungsten carbide is investigated by measuring cutting force, tool wear, tool life, and surface roughness profile according to cutting length. The machining test was conducted with high hardened workpiece and their performances are investigated in high speed cutting conditions. Also, the relationship between the machining characteristics and the Co contents are investigated under various high speed cutting conditions.
