Based on the monthly weather report of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and daily sea surface temperature (SST) in Incheon harbor of National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, heat budget in Incheon coastal area was estimated. The temperature differences between the sea surface and near bottom were nearly within 1$^{\circ}C$. This indicate the mixing from the sea surface and the bottom. The net heat flux through the sea surface and the advection through the inner and outer bay was affected uniformly to the water body in Incheon coastal area. The net heat flux was about 110W/$m^2$ in maximum value on May, about -80W/$m^2$ in minimum on January. The net heat flux through the sea surface from the solar radiation was about 2.35$\times$${10}^5$W during the year. This heat flux flew out the bay through the advection by the same flux.

This study is aimed to develop the dynamic analysis technique for a floating aquaculture in a shallow water region under the harsh sea condition. In case of the installation region to transform from a coastal area to the offshore area, the influence of sea bed with sea waves on the mooring lines was announced to be significant by other authors. In this study, the numerical tool was developed to solve dynamic behavior of the floating barge coupled with mooring lines in a shallow zone of the sea considering the influence of sea bed on the floating system.
The Saemangeum embankment construction have changed the flowing on the topography of the coastal marine environment. However, the variety of ecological factors are changing from outside of Saemangeum embankment area. The ecosystem of various marine organisms have led to changes by sea surface temperature. The aim of this study is to monitoring of sea surface temperature(SST) changes were measured by using thermal infrared satellite imagery, MODIS and Landsat. The MODIS data have the high temporal resolution and Landsat satellite data with high spatial resolution was used for time series monitoring. The extracted informations from sea surface temperature changes were compared with the dyke to allow them inside and outside of Saemangeum embankment. The spatial extent of the spread of sea water were analyzed by SST using MODIS and Landsat thermal channel data. The difference of sea surface temperature between inland and offshore waters of Saemangeum embankment have changed by seasonal flow and residence time of sea water in dyke.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between nutrients and phytoplankton. This study was done by the comparison to two costal areas Mokpo, which inflow fresh water, and Wando. In August, salinity of the sea water decreased by 3.5-4.5%o in Mokpo coastal area, but was not nearly decreased in Wando coastal area. This suggests a lot of fresh water inflow in Mokpo coastal area. DIN and DIP were decreased by water temperature increasing in Wando. However, in Mokpo, DIN and DIP were increased greatly during the summer season. Nitrogen was limited to a 10 NIP ratio especially during the summer season in Wando coastal area while phosphorus in Mokpo coastal area was limited with over 28 N/P ratio in all the seasons. Coefficient of determination$(r^2)$ between DIP and Chl.-a was 0.91 in Mokpo coastal area. On the other hand, Coefficient of determination$(r^2)$ between Chl.-a and DIN, DIP were 0.93 and 0.89, respectively, in Wando coastal area. These results suggest DIP in Mokpo and DIN and DIP in Wando might be limited at the increase of phytoplankton.

In coastal zones with high tidal ranges like Korean western coast, port construction and reclamation projects have been increased. Most of the projects include sea-dyke construction. In the sea-dykes constructed to protect sea water intrusion, sea water was exchanged through the permeable dykes. The water level inside the area enclosed by the dykes changes with time due to tidal action of outer sea, but the tidal range is smaller than that of outside because of strong friction. In numerical modeling of coastal circulation the water exchange through the dykes has been neglected, which has produced inaccurate estimation neglecting the water exchange. In this study a method, which can consider water exchange through sea-dyke, was suggested and the modeling accuracy was improved. A groundwater theory was utilized to explain the phenomena.
In the shallow coastal area, located off the northwestern Taean Peninsula of the eastern Yellow Sea, geoacoustic models with two layers were reconstructed for underwater acoustic experimentation and modeling. The Yellow Sea experienced glacio-eustasy sea-level fluctuations during Quaternary period. Coastal sedimentation in the Yellow Sea was characterized by alternating terrestrial and shallow marine deposits that reflected the fluctuating sea levels. The coastal geoacoustic models were based on data from piston, grab cores and the high-resolution 3.5 kHz, chirp seismic profiles (about 70 line-kilometers, respectively). Geoacoustic data of the cores were extrapolated down to 3 m in depth for geoacoustic models. The geoacoustic property of seafloor sediments is considered a key parameter for modeling underwater acoustic environments. For simulating actual underwater environments, the P-wave speed of the models was adjusted to in-situ depth below the sea floor using the Hamilton method. The proposed geoacoustic models could be used for submarine acoustic inversion and modeling in shallow-water environments of the study area.
Mean sea level has recently been rising due to global warming causing coastal erosion. As Korea is peninsula, the land loss due to coastal erosion is critical. An approach in this study is cementing the coastal area using bacteria, which is called microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP). This study tried to see how fresh water and sea water work with MICP as a solvent. Ureolytic activity during the MICP reaction was measured with deionized and sea water. A soil column was prepared to evaluate the strength of MICP-treated sand. Sands were treated by MICP with surface percolation method. As the treatmen t style was different with other conventional methods, several methods were proposed to properly evaluate the MICP-treated sand surface. A micro-scale evaluation was performed to assess the mineral structure treated by different solvents. As results, sea water rendered the ureolytic reaction slower. A needle penetrometer worked well to evaluate the MICP-treated sand surface. This study confirmed the utilization of sea water is feasible as the solvent of MICP.
In the adjacent seas of Cheju Island, the oceanographic conditions show low salinity surface waters starting in May. This water flows from the southeast part of the China Coastal Water, which flows southeastward along the Great Yangtze Sand Bank until April, with the help of southeasterly winds and flows from the adjacent sea off Cheju Island. In May, the Tsushima Warm Current and the low salinity surface water fluctuate in short and long-term periods as influenced by Yellow Sea Cold Water, which flows to the bottom layer at the western entrance of Cheju Strait. Temperature and salinity fronts in the northeastern sea area of U Island are formed in the boundary area between the Tsushima Warm Current, which expands towards Cheju Island from the southeastern sea area of Cheju Island and Hows out from the eastern entrance of the strait. Seasonally, additional oceanographic conditions, such as coastal counter-currents, which flow southward, appears within limited areas in the adjacent eastern and western seas of Cheju Island.
Harmful dinoflagellate Cochlodinium polykrikoides blooms have been frequently occurred in coastal areas of the East Sea since 1995. We compared the oceanic conditions in years 1995, 2001 and 2003 when the C. polykrikoides bloom was strong, and in years 1998 and 2004 when the C. polykrikoides bloom was not appeared. We studied temporal and spatial variation of upwelling and geostrophic currents on the western channel of Korean Strait, an entrance of the East Sea. The period and occurrence area of C. polykrikoides bloom was depended on variation of upwelling in summer. In the distributions of geostrophic current, southward current was dominant near the coast in August, 1998 and 2000. Whereas northward current was dominant near and off the coast in August, 1995 and 2003 which the C. polykrikoides bloom was strong. When compared dominant phytoplankton of the coastal areas in each year, Kuroshio indicator species Proboscia alata and Chaetoceros affine were dominant, respectively, in 2001 and 2003 at every stations. However, the dominant species was variable at each coastal area in 1998 and 2000. In 2003, the abundance of Sagitta elegans which is known as the cold water indicator was low, but the abundance of S. enflata, warm water indicator, was very high in Gangneung compared to Sokcho. It seemed that the distribution of S. elegans is restricted by strong warm water current. In conclusion, it was estimated that the distribution of C. polykrikoides bloom in the coastal area of the East Sea was closely related with the strength of East Korea Warm Current and upwelling.

Long-term trends and distribution patterns of water quality were investigated in the Gunsan coastal areas of Yellow Sea, Korea from 1972 to 2006. Water samples were collected at 6 stations and physicochemical parameters were analyzed including water temperature, salinity, suspended solids(SS), chemical oxygen demand(COD), dissolved oxygen(DO) and nutrients. Spatial distribution patterns of temperature, DO and SS were not clear among stations but the seasonal variations were distinct except COD and SS. The trend analysis by principal component analysis(PCA) during 24 years revealed the significant variations in water quality in the study area. Spatial water qualities were clearly classified into 3 clusters by PCA; station cluster 1, 2~4, and 5~6. Annual water qualities were clearly classified into 4 surface water clusters and 5 bottom water clusters by PCA. By this multi-variate analysis. The annual trends were summarized as follows; Salinity, pH and DO tended to increase since late 1970's, COD to increase since 1987, and SS to decrease and nutrients to increase in Gunsan coastal waters due to the input of fresh water from land same as in Kyoungin coastal area, Asan coastal area and Choensoo bay.
