  • Most of clustering methods usually employ the center of a cluster to assign the input data into a cluster. When the shape of a cluster could not be easily represented by the center of cluster, however, it is difficult to assign input data into a proper cluster using previous methods. In this paper, to overcome such a difficulty, a cluster is to be represented as a collection of several subclusters. And membership functions are used to represent how much input data belong to subclusters. Then the position of each subcluster is adoptively corrected by use of a competitive learning neural network. To show the validity of the proposed method, a numerical example is illustrated, where FMMC(Fuzzy Min-Max Clustering) algorithm is compared with the proposed method.

  • Korea National Forest Inventory System has been adopting different cluster plot design and new equations to estimate growing stock volumes since 2006. These changes have resulted in volume estimations which show some difference from previous ones. This study is to find out the source of such difference. For this, relevant data was collected from 80 plots of 20 cluster samples according to the cluster plot design applied to 4th and 5th National Forest Inventory. Then growing stock volumes were estimated by using current and previous individual tree volume equations respectively. An investigation was made to detect whether such difference in volume estimates was originated from the changes in cluster plot design or from using different volume equations. T-test results showed that the difference from changes in cluster plot design was negligible. Instead, changes in volume equations had statistically significant effects in volume estimation. Since the volume estimation by the 5th National Forest Inventory would bring overestimation by applying different volume equations, all the volume estimations made prior to 2006 would require necessary modifications for international reporting.

  • Package-On-Package (PoP) technology is developing toward smaller form factors with high-speed data transfer capabilities to cope with high DDR4x memory capacity. The common application processor (AP) used for PoP devices in smartphones has the bottom package as logic and the top package as memory, which requires both thermally and electrically enhanced functions. Therefore, it is imperative that PoP designs consider both thermal and power distribution network (PDN) issues. Stacked packages have poorer thermal dissipation than single packages. Since the bottom package usually has higher power consumption than the top package, the bottom package impacts the thermal budget of the top package (memory). This paper investigates the thermal and electrical characteristics of PoP designs, particularly the bottom package. Findings include that via and dense via-cluster volume have an important role to lower thermal resistance to the motherboard, which can be an effective way to manage chip hot spots and reduce the thermal impact on the memory package. A Cu block and dense via-cluster layout with an optimal location are proposed to drain the heat from the chip hot spots to motherboard which will enhance thermal and electrical performance at the design stage. The analytical thermal results can be used for design guidelines in 3D packaging.

  • Clustering methods are very useful in many fields such as data mining, classification, and object recognition. Both the supervised and unsupervised grouping approaches can classify a series of sample data with a predefined or automatically assigned cluster number. However, there is no constraint on the number of elements for each cluster. Numbers of cluster members for each cluster obtained from clustering schemes are usually random. Thus, some clusters possess a large number of elements whereas others only have a few members. In some areas such as logistics management, a fixed number of members are preferred for each cluster or logistic center. Consequently, it is necessary to design a clustering method that can automatically adjust the number of group elements. In this paper, a k-means based clustering method with a fixed number of cluster members is proposed. In the proposed method, first, the data samples are clustered using the k-means algorithm. Then, the number of group elements is adjusted by employing a greedy strategy. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed clustering scheme can classify data samples efficiently for a fixed number of cluster members.

  • In this paper, determination of the scalability of the cluster composed common personal computer was performed when optimization of reinforced concrete structure using genetic algorithm. The goal of this research is watching the potential of multi-core-PC cluster for optimization of seismic design of reinforced-concrete structures. By increasing the number of core-processer of cluster, decreasing of computation time per each generation of genetic algorithm was observed. After classifying the components in singular personal computer, the estimation of the expected bottle-neck phenomenon and comparison with wall-clock time and Amdahl's law equation was performed. So we could obseved the scalability of the cluster appear complex tendency. For separating the bottle-neck phenomenon of physical and algorithm, the different size of population was selected for genetic algorithm cases. When using 64 core-processor, the efficiency of cluster is low as 31.2% compared with Amdahl's law efficiency.

  • Wireless sensor network technologies applicable to various industrial fields are rapidly growing. Because it is difficult to change a battery for the once distributed wireless sensor network, energy efficient design is very critical. In order to achieve this purpose in network design, a number of studies have been examining the energy efficient routing protocol. The sensor network consumes energy in proportion to the distance of data transmission and the data to send. Cluster-based routing Protocols such as LEACH-C achieve energy efficiency through minimizing the distance of data transmission. In LEACH-C, however, the total distance between the nodes consisting the clusters are considered important in constructing clustering. This paper examines the cluster-head-selection-algorithm that reflect the distance between the base station and the cluster-head having a big influence on energy consumption. The Proposed method in this paper brought the result that the performance improved average $4{\sim}7%$ when LEACH-C and the base station are located beyond a certain distance. This result showed that the distance between cluster-head and the base station had a substantial influence on lifetime performance in the cluster-based routing protocol.

  • A wireless sensor network communication technique has been broadly studied with continuous advances in ubiquitous computing environment. Especially, because the resource of the sensor node is limited, it is important to reduce the communication energy by using an energy-efficient routing protocol. The existing cluster-based routing protocols have a problem that they cannot select a cluster head efficiently by randomly choosing a head. In addition, because the existing cluster-based routing protocols do not support the large scale of network, they cannot be used for various applications. To solve the above problems, we, in this paper, propose a new cluster-based routing protocol using representative paths. The proposed protocol constructs an efficient cluster with distributed cluster heads by creating representative paths based on hop count. In addition, a new routing protocol supports multi-hop routing for data communication between a cluster member node and a cluster head as well as between cluster heads. Finally, we show that our protocol outperforms LEACH and Multihop-LEACH in terms of reliability and scalability.

  • Balanced half sample method is a simple variance estimation method for complex sampling designs. Since it is simple and flexible, it has been widely used in large scale sample surveys. However, the usual BHS method overestimate the true variance in without replacement sampling and two-stage cluster sampling. Focusing on this point , we proposed an unbiased BHS variance estimator in a stratified two-stage cluster sampling and then described an implementation method of the proposed estimator. Finally, partially BHS design is explained as a tool of reducing the number of replications of the proposed estimator.
