  • Closed form solutions for equilibrium and flexibility matrices of the Mindlin-Reissner theory based eight-node rectangular plate bending element (MRP8) using Integrated Force Method (IFM) are presented in this paper. Though these closed form solutions of equilibrium and flexibility matrices are applicable to plate bending problems with square/rectangular boundaries, they reduce the computational time significantly and give more exact solutions. Presented closed form solutions are validated by solving large number of standard square/rectangular plate bending benchmark problems for deflections and moments and the results are compared with those of similar displacement-based eight-node quadrilateral plate bending elements available in the literature. The results are also compared with the exact solutions.

  • Very convenient equivalent circuits fur the design of bandpass filters with an attenuation pole in the lower or upper stopband are provided together with necessary closed-form solutions. The proposed approach gives us much flexibility and simplifies the design of inserting attenuation poles.

  • A general method of solving inverse kinematics of three-joint manipulator composed of revolute joints or prismatic joints or combinations of those joints is presented in this study. In completing real-time control, it is very important to obtain the closed form solutions of inverse kinematics rather than iterative numerical solutions, because iterative numerical solutions are generally much slower than the corresponding closed form solutions. If it is possible to obtain the inverse kinematic solutions for general cases of considering twist anlges and offsets, the manipulator work space can be designed and enlarged more effciently for specific task. Moreover, in idustrial manipulators, the effect of main three joints is larger than that of the other three joints related to orientation in the view of work space. Therfore the solutions of manin three-joint are considered. Even The inverse kinematic equations are complicatedly coupled, the systematical solving process by using symbolic calculation is presented.

  • The analysis of laterally loaded piles is generally carried out by idealizing the soil mass as Winkler springs, which is a crude approximation; however this approach gives reasonable results for many practical applications. For more precise analysis, the three- dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) is one of the best alternatives. The FEA uses the modulus of elasticity $E_s$ of soil, which can be determined in the laboratory by conducting suitable laboratory tests on undisturbed soil samples. Because of the different concepts and idealizations in these two approaches, the results are expected to vary significantly. In order to investigate this fact in detail, three-dimensional finite element analyses were carried out using different combinations of soil and pile characteristics. The FE results related to the pile deflections are compared with the closed-form solutions in which the modulus of subgrade reaction $k_s$ is evaluated using the well-known $k_s-E_s$ relationship. In view of the observed discrepancy between the FE results and the closed-form solutions, an improved relationship between the modulus of subgrade reaction and the elastic constants is proposed, so that the solutions from the closed-form equations and the FEA can be closer to each other.

  • This paper deals with approximate integral solutions to the one-dimensional model describing the charging process of stratified thermal storage tanks. Temperature is assumed to be the form of Fermi-Dirac distribution function, which can be separated to two sets of cubic polynomials for each hot and cold side of thermal boundary layers. Proposed approximate integral solutions are compared to the previous works of the approximate analytic solutions and show reasonable agreement. The approach, however, has benefits in mathematical difficulties, complicated solution form and unstable convergence of series solution founded in the previous analytic solutions. Solutions for a semi-infinite region, which have simple closed form solutions, give close agreement to those for a finite region. Thermocline thickness is obtained in closed form and shows proportional behavior to the square root of time and inverse proportional behavior to the square root of flow rate.

  • Model-based, data-driven and physics-based approaches represent the state-of-the-art techniques to estimate the aircraft flow angles, angle-of-attack and angle-of-sideslip, in avionics. Thanks to sensor fusion techniques, a synthetic sensor is able to provide estimation of flow angles without any dedicated physical sensors. The work deals with a physics-based scheme derived from flight mechanic theory that leads to a nonlinear flow angle model. Even though several solvers can be adopted, nonlinear models can be replaced with less accurate but straightforward ones in practical applications. The present work proposes a linearisation to obtain the flow angles' closed form solution that is verified using a flight simulator. The main objective of the paper, in fact, is to analyse the estimation degradation using the proposed closed form solutions with respect to the nonlinear scheme. Moreover, flight conditions, where the proposed closed form solutions are not applicable, are identified.

  • The scaling laws for vibration response of anti-symmetrically laminated plates are derived by applying the similitude transformation to the governing differential equations directly. With this approach, a closed-form solution of the governing equations is not required. This is a significant advantage over the method employed by other researchers where similitude transformation is applied to the closed-form solution. The scaling laws are tested by comparing the similitude fundamental frequencies to the theoretical fundamental frequencies determined from the available closed-form solutions. In case of complete similitude, similitude solutions from the scaling laws exactly agree with the theoretical solutions. Sometimes, it may not be feasible to select the model which obeys the similarity requirement completely, therefore partial similitude is theoretically investigated and approximate scaling laws are recommended. The distorted models in stacking sequences and laminated material properties demonstrate reasonable accuracy. On the contrary, a model with distortion in fiber angle is not recommended. The derived scaling laws are very useful to determine the vibration response of complex prototypes by performing the experiment on a model with required similarities.

  • In this paper, a general closed-form solution for evaluating the dynamic behavior of a Timoshenko beam on elastic foundation under a moving harmonic line load is formulated in the frequency-wavenumber domain and in a moving coordinate system. It is found that the characteristic equation is quartic with real coefficients only, and its poles can be presented explicitly. This enables the substitution of these poles into Cauchy's residue theorem, leading to the general closed-form solution. The solution can be reduced to seven existing closed-form solutions to different sub-problems and a new closed-form solution to the subproblem of a Timoshenko beam on an elastic foundation subjected to a moving quasi-static line load. Two examples are included to verify the solution.

  • This manuscript is dedicated to deriving the closed form solutions of free vibration of viscoelastic nanobeam embedded in an elastic medium using nonlocal differential Eringen elasticity theory that not considered before. The kinematic displacements of Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko theories are developed to consider the thin nanobeam structure (i.e., zero shear strain/stress) and moderated thick nanobeam (with constant shear strain/stress). To consider the internal damping viscoelastic effect of the structure, Kelvin/Voigt constitutive relation is proposed. The perforation geometry is intended by uniform symmetric squared holes arranged array with equal space. The partial differential equations of motion and boundary conditions of viscoelastic perforated nonlocal nanobeam with elastic foundation are derived by Hamilton principle. Closed form solutions of damped and natural frequencies are evaluated explicitly and verified with prestigious studies. Parametric studies are performed to signify the impact of elastic foundation parameters, viscoelastic coefficients, nanoscale, supporting boundary conditions, and perforation geometry on the dynamic behavior. The closed form solutions can be implemented in the analysis of viscoelastic NEMS/MEMS with perforations and embedded in elastic medium.
