Three types of clinopyroxenes in alkali basaltic rocks from Jeju Island can be identified on the basis of geochemical and textural data. Type Ⅰ is Cr-rich diopside in spinel peridotites from the upper mantle. Type Ⅱ is augite in fine-grained pyroxenites which are possibly either magmatic vein or metamorphic segregations owing to anatexis of the upper mantle. The augite of Type Ⅱ contains high Ca and Mg and relatively low Ti. Type Ⅲ is thought to be either cumulates or cognate phenocrysts and can be subdivided into Ⅲa, Ⅲb, and Ⅲc based on their occurrence mode. Clinopyroxenes of Type Ⅰ have the highest Mg# and Si and the lowest Ti, whereas those of Type Ⅲhave lower Mg#와 Si and higher Ti. These geochemical characteristics indicate that (Ti+Al/sup Ⅵ/)/Si and Al/sup Ⅵ//Al/sup Ⅵ/ increase from Type Ⅰ to Type Ⅲ. It is possibly interpreted that Type Ⅰ is of the highest pressure origin and Type Ⅲ of the lowest. Fractionation of high-pressure clinopyroxenes would result in evolved undersaturated alkali-enriched liquids, probably producing the alkali-enriched host basaltic rocks in Jeju Island.
Clinopyroxene in the Geodo mine belongs to diopside-hedenbergite series. It is widely distributed throughout the mine area together with garnet and is also closely related with Fe-mineralization. Clinopyroxenes in the Geodo mine including two samples from the sangdong and Ulchin Mines are studied using polarized microscope, EPMA, XRD, and IR spectroscopy for occurrence, chemistry, structure, and crystal chemistry. Especially, variations in unit-cell parameters are examined in relation with the substitution scheme between Fe and Mg cations. Clinopyroxenes in the Geodo mine occur in both endoskarn and exoskarn zone. It is mostly anhedral to subhedral with fine- to medium-grained in texture, but some have bigger crystals of short prismatic or columnar habits. Clinopyroxene occurs as monomineralic or is associated with mostly garnet and sometimes with actinolite, magnetite, epidote, and chlorite. Chemical analysis reveals that the Geodo clinopyroxene is diopsidic in composition (Di: 65-96%). This fact is in good contrast with garnet chemistry showing mostly andraditic (An: 41-82%). Especially, clinopyroxene coexisting with magnetite belongs to nearly end member diopside (Di: 97-99%). Thus, diopside-andradite pair indicates that Geodo skarns were formed under the reduced environment. X-ray diffraction analysis shows unit-cell parameters vary with increase of Fe contents: a = 9.765-9.838$\AA$, b = 8.943-9.020$\AA$, c= 5.240-5.253$\AA$.$\beta$ = 105.70-104.83$^{\circ}$, and V =440.64-448.19$\AA$3. It is noted from the least square regression that a, b and V increase linearly with increase of Fe content, while $\beta$ slightly decreases and c remains nearly unchanged as change in Fe content. These trends are to difference between synthetic and natural clinopyroxenes. This fact is also recognized in IR spectra which show a slight shift of several absorption bands toward lower wavenumber region with increasing Fe content.
The Gukjeon Pb-Zn mine was recognized as skarn deposits which replaced the limestone layer of the Jeongkansan Formation by intrusion of biotite granite in late Cretaceous. The Jeongkansan Formation is mainly composed of tuffaceous shale, and interlayers of sandstone, andesitic tuff, limestone, and conglomerate. The limestone layer is located in the lower part of the Jeongkansan Formation with 6~8 m in thickness and about 500 m in length. The Gukjeon deposits are divided into the Jukgang ore bodies once mined underground and the eastern ore bodies. Main ores are sphalerite and galena, in association with small amounts of chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite, etc. Skarns mainly consist of clinopyroxenes and Ca-garnets, associated with actinolite, chlorite, axinite, and calcite, etc. The Jukgang ore bodies show symmetrical distribution of zoning outward, representing clinopyroxene (hedenbergite) zone, clinopyroxene-garnet (grossular) zone, garnet (andradite) zone, and alteration zone of hornfels. $Fe^{2+}$ contents in clinopyroxenes increase with decreasing sphalerite grade. Sphalerite ores are found in all zones and $Fe^{2+}$ contents in sphalerite increase in the same way as those in clinopyroxenes, implying that clinopyroxene and sphalerite are closely related each other. It is concluded that the Gukjeon ores occurred in the ore rich zone of high grade sphalerite with less pyrite in assoication with clinopyroxene.
Modal and chemical compositions of clinopyroxnes in spinel peridotites from the Baegryeong Island and the Boeun, enclosed in Miocene alkali basalt, are important for understanding the pre-eruptive temperature condition and chemical processes such as mantle depletion and enrichment. All spinel peridotites show transitional texture between protogranular and porphyroclastic textures. Temperature ranges of spinel peridotites from the Baegryeong Island and the Boeun at 15 kb are 773∼1188℃ and 705∼1106℃, respectively. The spinel peridotites from the Baegryeong Island and the Boeun have undergone the 1∼10% and 1∼4% fractional melting, which were determined by using primitive mantle-normalized Y and Yb of clinopyroxenes. LREE enrichment patterns of clinopyroxene indicate that these rocks from both areas have undergone cryptic mantle metasomatism without new minerals.
The Samhwa iron ore deposit, which is of typical magnetite skarn type, is located in the Samhwadong area of Donghae city, Kangwon-do, Korea. Skarn minerals are mainly composed of garnet, clinopyroxene, vesuvianite, wollastonite and small amounts of epidote and quartz. The garnets are isotropic $(Ad_{92.82{\sim}98.37})$ or anisotropic andradite $(Ad_{45.30{\sim}75.85})$ and grossular $(Gr_{86.26{\sim}24.47})$, the clinopyroxenes are ferrosalite and salite, Homogenization temperature of gas rich two phase inclusions in garnet are $368{\sim}593^{\circ}C$, and salnities of polyphase inclusions in garnet have 33.9~68.4 equ. NaCl wt. %. Garnet grain often shows composional variation from its core to rim. In other words, Fe and Al contents in garnet vary inversely, which suggest that the variation depends upon $f_{o2}$ during skarn formation.
A group of 16 $Zn+Pb{\pm}Ag$ deposits distributed in the Pyeongchang-Jucheon area, Kangwon-do, South Korea, were semi-regionally investigated. These deposits are contact metasomatic and/or hydrothermal replacement types hosted in the carbonate-dominated Cambrian Machari Formation and Ordovician Ibtanri Formation, and also in the carbonate interbeds of the Precambrian argillic metasediments. Comparing some key aspects of the individual deposits, it is found that the ore deposits hosted in the Machari and Ibtanri Formations are mostly of steeply-dipping chimneys with or without skarn minerals and are rich in Ag and Pb>Zn in metal grade whereas those occuring in the carbonate interbeds of the Precambrian argillic metasediments are gently-dipping conformable lenticular orebodies mostly with skarn minerals and are generally poor in Ag and Zn>Pb. The skarn mineralization in the area appears to have occurred during the lower Cretaceous (118.7Ma) to mid-Cretaceous (107.8Ma) time assumed from the K-Ar dates of the Dowon and Pyeongchang granites which are closely associated with the skarn ore deposits. The Rb/Ba/Sr ratios of these granites indicate that they are of strongly differentiated anomalous granites, and the Nb vs. Y and Rb vs. Y+Nb plots fall on the field of volcanic arc setting. The contact aureoles are zoned, giving the sequence in order of increasing distance from igneous contact: garnet-wollastonite, granet-wollastonite-clinopyroxene and garnet-clinopyroxene in such as the Pyeongchang and Yeonwol 114 areas. Electron microprobe analyses reveal that garnets and clinopyroxenes are generally low in Fe and Mn. Garnets are grossular to intermediate grandite except for those from the Ogryong exoskarn which are richer in andradite, pyrope and spessartine fractions. This indicates that the oxidation state of skarn-forming environment at Ogryong was higher than at the other deposits. Clinopyroxenes are mostly salitic except for those from the Ogryong exoskarn which involve considerable amounts of hedenbergite and johansenite fractions. The ${\delta}^{18}O$ value of Jurassic biotite granite at Ogryong is higher (+10.21‰) than that of Cretaceous one at Chodun (+8.41‰). The ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of carbonate rocks range from -0.89‰ to 0.68‰ and the ${\delta}^{18}O$ values range from +11.91‰ to + 19.34‰ indicating that these carbonate rocks are of marine origin. However, the ${\delta}^{13}C$ values of skarn calcite and vein calcite are -4.80‰ and -12.92‰, and the ${\delta}^{18}O$ values are +5.56‰ and +10.32‰, respectively, indicating that these calcites are of hydrothermal origin. The ${\delta}^{34}S$ values of sulfide minerals range from +4.4‰ to +8.7‰ suggesting that the sulfurs are of magmatic origin.
The Ulsan Fe-W deposit, which can be classified as a calcareous skarn deposit, is represented by ore pipe consisting principally of magnetite and lesser amounts of scheelite with minor sulphides, sulphosaits, arsenides, sulpharsenides, etc. At Ulsan mine, metasomatic processes of skarn growth may be divided broadly into two stages based on the paragenetic sequence of calc-silicate minerals and their chemical composition; early and late skarn stages. Early stage has started with the formation of highly calcic assemblages of wollastonite, diopsidic clinopyroxene and nearly pure grossular, which are followed by the formation of clinopyroxenes with salite to ferrosalite composition and grandite garnets with intermediate composition. Based on these calc-silicate assemblages, the temperatures of early skarn formations have been in the ranges of $550^{\circ}$ to $450^{\circ}$. The calc-silicate assemblages formed during the earlier half period of late skarn stage show the enrichment of notable iron and slight manganese, and the depletion of magnesium; clinopyroxenes are hedenbergitic, and grandite garnets are andraditic. The formation temperatures during this skarn stage are inferred to have been in the range of $430^{\circ}$ to $470^{\circ}C$ at low $X_{CO_2}$ by data from fluid inclusions of late andraditic garnets. The later half period of late skarn stage is characterized by the hydrous alteration of pre-existing minerals and the formation of hydrous silicates. The main iron-tungsten mineralization representing prominent deposition of magnetite immediately followed by minor scheelite impregnation has taken place at the middle of early skarn stage, while complex polymetallic mineralization has proceeded during and after the late skarn stage. Various metals and semimetals of Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Ag, In, Sn, Sb, Te, Pb and Bi have been in various states such as native metal, sulphides, arsenides, sulphosaits, sulpharsenides and tellurides.
A mineral phase contained in a rock sample can be categorized into several crystal populations with distinct origins and crystal growth histories. A detailed textural and mineralogical investigation on a clinopyroxene megacryst-bearing porphyritic dike with glassy chilled margins (tachylyte) in the southeastern Ulleung Island was conducted to decipher its crystal populations. During this study, we have measured glass and mineral major element compositions using electron microprobe analyzer. Tachylyte has a homogeneous trachyandesitic composition without any significant alteration characteristics, suggesting that its composition may represent the original melt composition of the dike. Clinopyroxene and plagioclase larger than 0.5 mm are antecrysts equilibrated with a more primitive melt composition than trachyandesitic tachylyte. Meanwhile, clinopyroxene and plagioclase microlites (<0.5mm) are regarded as primocrysts crystallized in-situ. According to our results, all clinopyroxenes in the Stage I Dodong Basalt are sectored into basal and prismatic parts, whose compositional ranges systematically vary: [Mg+Si+Fe]basal ↔ [Al+Ti+Na]prism. Therefore, we suggest that the effect of the elemental partitioning caused by the clinopyroxene sector zonation in Stage I volcanism should be considered in the future works.
The spinel Ihelzolite of ultramafic xenoliths are found in the alkali basalt from eastern part of the Cheju island, Korea. The xenolith is are mainly composed of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and spinel. Based on the chemical compositions of the constituent minerals, the ultramafic xenolith belong to upper mantle peridotite. Each minerals have a protogranular texture. Olivine with kink band texture partly shows undulatory extinction. Some clinopyroxenes have spongy textured rims. Brown spinels occur in the interstices between olivine and pyroxene grains. Olivine is mostly forsterite $(Fo_{89-90})$. Orthopyroxene is enstatite $(Wo_{1.3}En_{88.4}Fs_{10.3})$ with 3.87~5.25 wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}$. Clinopyroxene is diopside $(Wo_{48.0}En_{46.2}Fs_{5.8})$ with 6.75~5.03 wt% $Al_{2}O_{3}$. Spinel has the Mg value of 75.9 and its Cr-number is 10.2. According to the PoT estimations for the mantle xenoliths, equilibrium temperatures of the xenoliths range from 1023 to $1038^{\circ}C$ and pressure is 18 kbar. Spinellhelzolite from this area, which is characterized by lower Cr-number (10.2) and homogeneous chemical compositions, supports that these ultramafic xenoliths are derived from the upper mantle.
In the southern limb of the Hambaek geosyncline belt, large-scaled skarn deposits are developed in the Cambro-Ordovician sedimentary rocks of the Chosun Supergroup. They are the Sangdong tungsten deposit, Geodo iron-copper deposit, Yeonhwa I and II lead-zinc deposits, and Ulchin zinc-lead deposit, all of which are associated with various skarn minerals. Though different occurrences and paragenesis are found in different deposits, most skarn deposits always have skarns of garnet (andradite-grossular series) and clinopyroxene(heden-bergite-diopside series). Andradite and hedenbergite are Fe-dominant members, but show different oxidation states, that is, Fe3+ for andradite and Fe2+ for hedenbergite. According to iron chemistry and log([Fe/Al]gd/[Fe/Mg]cpx) derived from equilibrium reactions, the diopside-andradite and hedenbergite-grossular pairs suggest the oxidized state (dian type) and reduced state (hegro type), respectively. Among skarn deposits developed in the Hambaek geosynline, it can be classified that the Geodo and Yeonhwa I skarns are of dian type, while the Sangdong, Yeonhwa II, and Ulchin deposits are of hegro type. This classification is not applicable to all kinds of skarn deposits, but may be applicable to such deposits as are more controlled by oxygen fugacity than composition of skarn fluid.
