This study was conducted to derive core and detailed competencies of dental hygienists to be utilized as educational targets to be reached by graduation as well as basic data that can be reflected in the development and improvement of dental hygiene curricula. This study analyzed publication reports from the Korean Dental Hygienists Association, the International Federation of Dental Hygienists, the Commission on Dental Accreditation, and the American Dental Education Association. Based on the academic classification system for dental hygiene studies, the components of core and detailed competencies of dental hygiene school at the time of graduation were extracted and developed through expert panel discussions. This study defined competencies at the graduation level of dental hygiene school and derived eight core competencies and their 52 detailed competencies to serve as educational objectives from four areas: professionalism, communication, clinical practice, and community and health promotion. In the future, it will be necessary to conduct self-assessments of competencies based on those developed in this study, at time of the graduation from dental hygiene school, as well as to continuously develop competency-based curricula according to entry level, knowledge level, and graduation level. Thus, it is urgently necessary to develop a system that can evaluate the competencies of dental hygienists after graduation and put this system into practical use.
There is no any reports on nation-wide nutrition survey since 1947 in Korea, During the period only the small scaled nutrition surveys have been reported by several investigators. Authors, under the financial support from the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs, Republic of Korea, had conducted a nation-wide nutrition survey, including dietary, clinical, and socio-economical aspects, during the period from 29th of July to 15th of August, 1969. Number of households surveyed and population distribution are shown in Table II-2 and age and sex distribution of the population surveyed are also in Table II-3 in this report. Average food and nutrient intakes are shown in Tables II-6, II-7 and II-8 respectively. For the detailed discussions on food and nutrient intakes, see the Tables II-9 through II-11 and Figures II-1 through II-10 in this report. Anthropometric data are shown in Tables III-1 through III-4 and in Figures III-1 through III-4. Data of deficiency diseases are shown in Table III-5 and in Figure III-5 in this report. Socio-economical data are shown in Tables IV-1 through IV-26 and in Figures IV-1 through IV-3 in this report.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the factors related to new nurses' organizational socialization (OS) process and to find out the strategic information for successful organizational socialization. Methods: The qualitative data were gathered from three focus group discussions with 13 new nurses and 5 experienced nurses. All interviews were recorded and transcribed. The transcript analyzed according to qualitative content analysis processes. Results: The factors related to new nurses' OS derived from new nurses' focus groups were 'burdens related to the characteristics of nursing duties', 'emotional and psychological characteristics' and 'facilitating factors to OS'. Two factors at the forepart were interfering factors to new nurses' OS. The factors related to new nurses' OS derived from experienced nurses' focus group classified to 'facilitating factors to OS', 'interfering factors to OS' and 'supports to facilitate new nurses' OS process'. Conclusion: The findings of the study revealed the facilitating and interfering factors to organizational socialization of new nurses. The main factors to interfere new nurses' OS were individual factors such as professional incompetency and psychological characteristics. On the other hand, Interactional factors within the organization were important to facilitate new nurses' OS. The findings can be applied for developing a special program to help new nurses adjust to the nursing organization successfully.
Bispbosphonates are a class of pharmaceutic agents, which induce apoptosis of osteoclast as well as impair osteoclastic activity to suppress bone resorption. Thus, bisphophonates are effectively used to treat osteoporosis, multiple myeloma and to prevent bone metastases of malignant cancer. However, recently dental disease have been reported associated with Bisphosphonates. Thus, there are a number of discussions about proper prevention and treatment of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of jaw(BRONJ). Marshall R. Urist in 1965 made the seminal discovery that a specific protein, BMP(bone morphogenetic protein), found in the extracellular matrix of demineralized bone could induce bone formation newly when implanted in extraosseous tissues in a host. BMPs are multi-functional growth factors which are members of the transforming growth factor-beta super family and their ability is that plays a pivotal roll in inducing bone. About 18 BMP family members have been identified and characterized. Among of them, BMP-2 and BMP-7 have significant importance in bone development. In this study, patients of BRONJ were recieved who visited Department of oral and maxillofacial surgery, school of dentistry, Wonkwang university for past 3 years from 2011 to 2013. We focused on the results of the surgical intervention. We suggest that new strategy of treatment used to rhBMP-2 and LFA(Lidocaine-Fibrinogen-Aprotinin)-collagen scaffold for patients of BRONJ. The purpose of this paper is to give a brief overview of BMPs and to critically review the clinical data currently available on rhBMP-2 and LFA collage scaffold.
Objectives: This is one of the manuals of East-West integrative medicine, which was created by the Committee on integrative medicine of Chung-Yeon Korean Medicine Hospital. To support clinical decision making and communication in the East-West cooperative treatment of mild cognitive impairment. Methods: Drafting was based on literature review from the MEDLINE, EMBASE, OASIS, and CNKI databases using search terms such as 'mild cognitive impairment', 'mild neurocognitive disorder', 'acupuncture', 'herbal medicine' and 'traditional Chinese medicine'. An amendment reflecting the goal of consultation and detailed treatment contents was made by reviewing the draft and holding discussion with the rehabilitation specialist of western medicine. The committee then agreed to adopt the manual through the process of review and feedback in addition to face-to-face discussions. Results: This manual contains the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment, the goal of consultation, and the cooperative treatment contents of the East-West medicine for mild cognitive impairment. Conclusions: This manual provides significant information about the decision making process and contents of treatment in one medical institution for East-West cooperative treatment of mild cognitive impairment.
Purpose: The practical examination portion of the National Dental Licensing Examination (NDLE) is slated to be administered in the latter half of 2021 in the form of a clinical performance examination that comprehensively evaluates the patient-dentist interaction using standardized patients (SPs). The SPs should be equipped with the basic qualities and capacity as evaluators for a fair and reliable administration of the test. Materials and Methods: In this study, we analyzed the existing training materials for SPs who participated in domestic and overseas practical tests for the development of training materials for SPs through seminars and surveys of 11 dentistry schools and colleges. Result: First, SPs should be selected according to the basic quality criteria and capacity, which they must possess, and the preliminary basic training about the details which they must have knowledge of and be provided through videorecorded cases before the implementation of the preliminary field training. Second, the roles of SPs and the calibration process of the evaluation result forms are needed when conducting the preliminary field training for SPs. After watching video-recorded scenario cases, the SPs participate in discussions about the watched videos before proceeding to calibration practices of evaluation result forms. Third, because the Type A questionnaire of the practical examination of the NDLE is dependent on the SPs' capacity and training, the fairness of the practical test is largely dependent on the SPs. Therefore, practicing the roles as evaluators and evaluation training should be provided using practical test items that can improve the reliability of the test and show a high level of reproducibility about the same case. Conclusion: The findings of this study will be utilized for the development of training materials for SPs, so they can participate in the administration of a fair and reliable practical examination of the NDLE.

Background: The first large coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak outside China occurred in Daegu. In response, we developed infection prevention measures for surgical patients during the outbreak at our hospital and retrospectively reviewed the outcomes of COVID-19-related surgical patients. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of 118 COVID-19-related surgical patients and monitored their clinical outcomes until March 31, 2021. We also interviewed healthcare workers who participated in their perioperative care at Kyungpook National University Chilgok Hospital. The perioperative management guidelines for COVID-19-related patients were prepared through multidisciplinary discussions, including the infection control department, surgical departments, and anesthesiology department before and during the COVID-19 outbreak. Results: One standard operating room was temporarily converted to a negative-pressure room by increasing the exhaust air volume, creating a relative pressure of -11.3 Pa. The healthcare workers were equipped with personal protective equipment according to the patient's classification of the risk of COVID-19 transmission. The 118 COVID-19-related patients underwent emergent surgery in the negative-pressure room, including three COVID-19-confirmed patients and five COVID-19-exposed patients. Conclusion: All surgeries of the COVID-19-related patients were performed without specific adverse events or perioperative COVID-19 transmission. Our experience setting up a negative-pressure operating room and conservative perioperative protocol to prevent COVID-19 transmission will help plan and execute infection control measures in the future.
The purpose of this study was to redesign a problem-based learning (PBL) curriculum and compare the differences between the previous and redesigned PBL based on the results of course satisfaction and student assessments. The PBL was redesigned using curriculum design guidelines (including revisions of curriculum objectives, learning components, learning environments, and assessment methods) that were developed based on previous studies and evaluation results. A comparative study was employed using course satisfaction surveys from the previous and redesigned curricula, and a total of 45 students participated. We also compared student assessment results from concept mapping, learning issue reports, modified essay questions, and reflection journals. We identified four key findings. First, we explored the possibility that the redesigned PBL could be implemented by student facilitators without professors as tutors. Second, the redesigned PBL fostered group dynamics that facilitated developing communication skills and collaborative learning through small-group discussions. Third, the new learning elements added in the redesigned PBL made a meaningful contribution to enhancing students' clinical reasoning based on hypothetico-deductive reasoning. Fourth, concept maps in redesigned PBL contained more complex and various nodes and connections, and the levels of the nodes were more appropriate. The implications of this study can provide meaningful preliminary information for redesigning PBL curricula for medical students to develop their essential competencies through PBL.

Objectives: Discussions regarding "medical blind spots" in Korea's "aging society" are continuously rising. In addition, the demand for medical attention and care for the elderly and vulnerable populations continues to increase. Given this, the government is promoting the "home healthcare service" project. This study aims to lay the foundation for promoting this project by investigating the perception of clinical Korean Medicine (KM) doctors in the "community health care" project. Methods: With the cooperation of the Association of Korean Medicine, we sent a questionnaire to all KM doctors through e-mail. The survey included personal information, awareness, appropriate disease and intervention, proper visit location, and pros and cons. Results: A total of 602 responses were collected and analyzed. Approximately 20% of the doctors answered that they were well aware of the service, while 55% responded that they did not know about it. For a visit, a KM doctor selected the appropriate diseases in the order of stroke, dementia and Parkinson's disease, osteoarthritis, and chronic diseases. Among treatments, acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine exhibited similar results. The most common opinion was that KM doctors should schedule their visits once a week for 6-12 months, which was the most prolonged period among the given options. More than 80% (84.1%) of the doctors replied that care projects were highly essential, and about 63.8% expressed their willingness to participate in these projects. Conclusion: To provide appropriate home health care, we must raise awareness among Korean medicine doctors. In addition, the healthcare budget must be increased to provide the required support.
Purpose: This study was to develop a factor-type patient classification system for general nursing unit based on nursing needs (KPCS; Korean patient classification system for nurses). Method: We reviewed workload management system for nurses(WMSN) of Walter Reed Medical Center, Korean patient classification system for ICU, and nursing activities in nursing records and developed the first version of KPCS. The final version KPCS was evaluated via validity and reliability verifications based on panel discussions and data from 800 patient classifications. Content validity was performed by Delphi method and concurrent validity was verified by the correlation of two tools (r=.71). Construct validity was also tested by medical department (p<.001), patient type (p<.001), and nurse intuition (p<.001). These verifications were performed from April to October, 2008. Results: The KPCS has 75 items in classifying 50 nursing activities, and categorized into 12 different nursing area (measuring vital sign, monitoring, respiratory treatment, hygiene, diet, excretion, movement, examination, medication, treatment, special treatment, and education/emotional support). Conclusion: The findings of the study showed sound reliability and validity of KPCS based on nursing needs. Further study is mandated to refine the system and to develop index score to estimate the necessary number of nurses for adequate care.
