  • In this paper, the evaluation of the performance of Korea Meteorological Administratio (KMA) Global Seasonal forecasting system version 6 (GloSea6) is presented by assessing the effects of larger ensemble size and carrying out the test using different initial conditions for hindcast in sub-seasonal to seasonal scales. The number of ensemble members increases from 3 to 7. The Ratio of Predictable Components (RPC) approaches the appropriate signal magnitude with increase of ensemble size. The improvement of annual variability is shown for all basic variables mainly in mid-high latitude. Over the East Asia region, there are enhancements especially in 500 hPa geopotential height and 850 hPa wind fields. It reveals possibility to improve the performance of East Asian monsoon. Also, the reliability tends to become better as the ensemble size increases in summer than winter. To assess the effects of using different initial conditions, the area-mean values of normalized bias and correlation coefficients are compared for each basic variable for hindcast according to the four initial dates. The results have better performance when the initial date closest to the forecasting time is used in summer. On the seasonal scale, it is better to use four initial dates, where the maximum size of the ensemble increases to 672, mainly in winter. As the use of larger ensemble size, therefore, it is most efficient to use two initial dates for 60-days prediction and four initial dates for 6-months prediction, similar to the current Time-Lagged ensemble method.

  • The object of this study was the climate change sensitivity assessment of Korean Fir and Khinghan Fir as a representative subalpine plant in South Korea. Using species distribution models, we predicted the probability of current and future species distribution. According to this study, potential distribution that have been predicted based on the threshold (MTSS) is, Khinghan Fir was higher loss rate than Korean Fir. And in the climate change sensitivity assessment using the scalar sensitivity weight ($W_{is}$), $W_{is}$ of Korean Fir was higher relatively than the sensitivity of Khinghan Fir. When using the species distribution models as shown in this study may vary depending on the probability of presence data and spatial variables. Therefore should be prior decision studies on the ecological environment of the study species. Based on this study, if it is domestic applicable climate change sensitivity assessment method is developed. it would be important decision-making to climate change and biological diversity of adaptation policy.

  • Currently, there is increasing demand for weather information, however, providing meteorology and climate information is limited. In order to improve them, supporting the meteorology and climate big data platform use and training the meteorology and climate big data specialist who meet the needs of government, public agencies and corporate, are required. Meteorology and climate big data requires high-value usable service in variety fields, and it should be provided personalized service of industry-specific type for the service extension and new content development. To provide personalized service, it is essential to build the collaboration ecosystem at the national level. Building the collaboration ecosystem environment, convergence of marine policy and climate policy, convergence of oceanography and meteorology and convergence of R&D basic research and applied research are required. Since then, demand analysis, production sharing information, unification are able to build the collaboration ecosystem.

  • The runoff will be changed in the future due to climate change, and this phenomenon affects the flood inflow to Water Resources Facilities (WRF) and its production. This study has evaluated the electric power generation of WRF in North Korea as climate change. The WRF can produce the electric power by rotating the hydraulic turbine using the energy of water. In other words, it converts the potential energy to the kinetic energy, then the kinetic energy to the electric energy. As a result of this study, the amount of power generation of WRF in North Korea decreased from 2011 to 2040, and increased from 2041 to 2100, comparing with present. In other words, the productivity will decrease at first (2011~2040) but increase (2041~2100). It is because there will be new facilities for climate change, and the capacities of them will be getting far better than the existing facilities. The existing North Korean WRFs are vulnerable to the effects of climate change, and it is judged that the new North Korean WRFs are advantageously located in the influence of climate change.

  • The monthly mean air temperature datasets of 61 stations in South Korea from 1973 to 2012 were collected to calculate trends in the warmth index (WI) and to analyze the potential enlargement of safety cultivation limit for sweet persimmon. The WI averaged over the last 40 years was 104.1 (℃·Month) at 61 stations, with the highest at Seogwipo station (WI=137.9) and the lowest at Daegwallyeong station (WI=60.9). It has increased by 1.8 (℃·Month) per 10 years over the last 40 years, with the highest in the year 1994 (WI=112.0) and the lowest in the year 1976 (WI=94.7). When the possible stations for sweet persimmon cultivation were classified by the basis on WI≥100, 38 out of the 61 weather stations were included in the safety cultivation zone for sweet persimmon for the last 40 years. On the other hand, the number of weather stations within the safety cultivation zones for sweet persimmon for the last 10 years (from 2003 to 2012) were 47 by adding additional 9 stations (Socho, Wonju, Chungju, Seosan, Uljin, Yangpyeong, Icheon, Cheonan, and Geochang stations). A further study of the climate conditions and soil characteristics is required for a better assessment of the safety cultivation zones for sweet persimmon.

  • This study attempts to estimate the economic effects of extreme climate events on agriculture with the case of Gangwon-do, drawing upon the Ricardian approach based upon the panel data on extreme climate events, soil and geography, farmland prices, and economic and social variables for the 11 municipal units of Gangwon-do during the period of 1993-2010. Our empirical analysis shows that the heavy rainfall-related extreme climate variable negatively affects the prices of rice paddy and dry farm field. The summer-related extreme temperature variables have negative economic impacts on the land values of both farmlands, while the winter-related ones positively affect them except for the extreme cold wave variable.

  • In this study, the clean air delivery rate (CADR) of ceiling air circulator (CAA) was determined under indoor environmental simulation conditions. An air filter was used to provide air cleaning ability to the CAA. The CADR of filter adapted CAA was evaluated and compared with the value of commercial air purifier. The installation of mesh-shaped filter on the CAA showed particle reduction effect on the particles over 0.4 ㎛ in diameter, but the CADR was up to 0.25 m3/min. When the filter having 99.9% in collection efficiency was installed on the CAA, its CADR was 1.52 m3/min, while the CADR of commercial air purifier was 3.19 m3/min.
