  • A number of alunite and pyrophyllite deposits occur around the Haenam area where Cretaceous volcanic and volcanogenic sediments are widely distributed. The K-Ar ages of alunite, sericite and whole rocks collected from alunite and pyrophyllite deposits and unaltered rocks representing various stratigraphic horizon of the area were determined and their formation stage was discussed. The ages of volcanic rocks range between $68.6{\pm}1.9$ and $94.1{\pm}2.0$ Ma corresponding to Cenomanian-Maastrichtian of upper Cretaceous. Andesitic rock gives $94.1{\pm}2.0$. Rhyolite and acidic tuffs give $79.47{\pm}1.7$ and $82.8{\pm}1.2$ Ma corresponding to Campanian. The later stage andesite gives $68.6{\pm}1.9$ Ma of Maastrichtian. The results suggest that volcanism of the area can be devided into three different stages. The ages of alunite and sericite range $71.8{\pm}2.8$ to $76.6{\pm}2.9$ Ma of late Campanian to early Maastrichtian which is rather earlier than the age of granite(67 Ma). It indicates that the alteration ages of these clay mineral deposits appeared to be related with its volcanism rather than the hydrothermal stage of granite of this area.

  • The necessity of exploration in deep sea increases to develop the natural resources. The deep marine sediments, which were recovered from the hydrate occurrence regions during the Ulleung Basin Gas Hydrate Expedition 2 (UBGH2), East Sea, Korea in 2010, are explored to obtain the geotechnical characteristics and strength parameters. The index properties of the specimens including the atterberg limits, specific surface, and particle size distribution are measured and compared with the previous studies. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy are conducted to analyze the clay mineralogy, chemical composition, and microstructure of the sediments. Strength parameters and shear wave velocities are measured with the axial strain by using an instrumented triaxial device. The strength parameters estimated by empirical equations are compared with the experimental results.

  • As a part of basic studies on monitoring and saturation estimation of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) storage using resistivity survey, laboratory experiment has been conducted to measure the change of the electrical resistivity through repeated experiments of supercritical $CO_2$ and brine water injection into homogeneous and heterogeneous sandstones. The $CO_2$ saturation is estimated by using resistivity index based on the resistivity measurements. The experimental results of two types of sandstones show that the effect of pore structure in the rock and the effect of contained clay minerals in the rock can be affected to calculate the $CO_2$ saturation. The result can be useful to evaluate the $CO_2$ saturation based on resistivity survey at the site where $CO_2 sequestrates.

  • In this study, cement clinkers were sintered at each temperature by replacing some of the clay components of cement clinkers with coal materials. The mineral phase change of sintered cement clinker was quantitatively analyzed by XRD-Rietveld method. As the sintering temperature of cement clinker increased, the amount of belite decreased, the amount of alite increased, and the amount of free-CaO decreased. The form of alite and belite could be distinguished at sintering temperature of 1450℃ or higher. The crystal size was greatly increased at 1500℃ sintering. It was confirmed that the excessive sintering was progressed. Free-CaO decreased with the increase of sintering temperature. At 1450 ℃ or higher, it was less than 0.5%. In 1450℃ or greater, it is determined that enough sintering is included. Therefore, the application of fly ash as a raw material of cement clinker was judged to be usable as a source of chemical components of alumina and iron raw materials.

  • This study evaluates the usefulness and capability of surface electrical resistivity technique for identifying the weak zones or subsurface cavities in karst area with limestone formation. Weak zones or cavities near surface can be potentially dangerous and several problems are associated with collapse of roads or buildings accompanied by subsidence phenomena. In this paper, both two and three dimensional resistivity investigation were conducted to investigate subsidence along a road in Yongweol-ri, Muan-gun, South Korea. The results of the resistivity survey using dipole-dipole array provide a clear view of the weathered regolith, the distribution of weak zones or cavities and bedrock. Several low resistivity areas were identified and subsequent drilling led to the discovery of several weak zone or clay-filled underground cavities. The drilling results show excellent correlation with the resistivity images. It is illustrated, the ability of electrical technique to produce high resolution images of subsurface, which are useful for subsidence assessment. Also the results of this study have demonstrated that two and three dimensional electrical resistivity surveys are useful for delineating the subsidence area. Based on resistivity imaging, the map of hazardous zone has been developed.

  • Landslides are known as gravitational mass movements that can carry the flow materials ranging in size from clay to boulders. The various types of landslides are differentiated by rate and depositional features. Indeed, flow characteristics are observed from very slow-moving landslides (e.g., mud slide and mud flow) to very fast-moving landslides (e.g., debris avalanches and debris flows). From a geomechanical point of view, shear-rate-dependent shear strength should be examined in landslides. This paper presents the design of advanced ring-shear apparatus to measure the undrained shear strength of debris flow materials in Korea. As updated from conventional ring-shear apparatus, this apparatus can evaluate the shear strength under different conditions of saturation, drainage and consolidation. We also briefly discussed on the ring shear apparatus for enforcing sealing and rotation control. For the materials with sands and gravels, an undrained ring-shear test was carried out simulating the undrained loading process that takes place in the pre-existing slip surface. We have observed typical evolution of shear strength that found in the literature. This paper presents the research background and expected results from the ring-shear apparatus. At high shear speed, a temporary liquefaction and grain-crushing occurred in the sliding zone may take an important role in the long-runout landslide motion. Strength in rheology can be also determined in post-failure dynamics using ring-shear apparatus and be utilized in debris flow mobility.

  • The geology of the Tumbang Mirih area in the Middle Kalimantan, Indonesia comprises Permian to Carboniferous Pinoh Metamorphic Rocks and Cretaceous Sepauk Plutonics of the Sunda Shield, late Eocene Tanjung Formation, Oligocene Malasan Volcanics, Oligocene to early Miocene Sintang Intrusives and Quaternary alluvium. Results of geochemical exploration and geological mapping exposed obviously that large amounts of gold-bearing quartz veins were found in the whole Tumbang Mirih areas. In many places, gold grains were megascopically detectable from panning products of stream sediments and conglomerate as Quaternary sediments. Even though no remnants of quartz veins are revealed in the most of survey area except Taran region, association of fold grains with layers of quartz pebbles and clays which correspond to the horizon of unconformity or previous river bottom indicates that the gold grains were separated from quartz veins. Along rivers often pebbles and clay layers just over or 10 to 20cm above the current waterlevel are recognized. The occurrence of gold in the conglomeratic layer was frequently confirmed during geochemical exploration. Since the conglomeratic layer was old stream sediments of Quaternary, it can be assumed that deposition of golds was controlled by shape of river floor, speed and shape of river flow, and distance from the source rock. Taran area and northern Takaoi area based on the all data are recommended as the promising areas.

  • The Ogcheon Au-Ag deposit consists of two quartz veins that fill the NE or NW-trending fissures in the metasedimentary rocks of unknown age. The quartz veins occur mainly in the massive type with partially breccia and cavity. They can be found along the strike for about minimum 50 m and varied in thickness from 0.1 to 0.3 m. The mineralogy of quartz veins from the Ogcheon deposit is mainly composed of hydrothermal alteration minerals such as pyrite, quartz, sericite, chlorite, clay minerals and sulfides including pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena. Fluid inclusion data from quartz indicate that homogenization temperatures and salinity of mineralization range from 184 to $362^{\circ}C$ and from 0.0 to 6.6 wt.% eq. NaCl, respectively. These suggest that ore forming fluids were progressively cooled and diluted from mixing with meteoric water. Sulfur(${\delta}^{34}S$: 0.4~8.4‰) isotope composition indicates that ore sulfur was derived from mainly magmatic source although there is a partial derivation from the host rocks. The calculated oxygen(${\delta}^{18}O$: 4.9~12.1‰) and hydrogen(${\delta}D$: -92~-74‰) isotope compositions suggest that magmatic and meteoric ore fluids were equally important for the formation of the Ogcheon deposit and then overlapped to some degree with another type of meteoric water during mineralization.

  • In this study, the properties of mudstone weathered soils related to landslides were analyzed at the area of landslide induced by heavy rainfall in Pohang. The soil tests were carried out to the soils obtained from landslide and non landslide sites, and the soil properties were investigated. The correlation between soil properties and landslides were analyzed using statistical technique, and then the soil factors were extracted from the correlation analysis. The correlation equation which can calculate the coefficient of permeability influenced on landslides was proposed using the soil factors. As the result of analysis, the porosity and unit weight of soils from the landslide area is smaller than those of soils from the non landslide area. The soils with poor grain size distribution and loose unit weight are prone to landslides because the soils have a large void ratio and a low unit weight. The permeability of soils from the landslide area is larger than that of soils from the non landslide area. According to the result of correlation analysis, the effective grain size, the saturated unit weight and silt and clay contents are evaluated as the influence factors. These factors were considered to estimate the coefficient of permeability of mudstone weathered soils.
