For soil improvement, sand mats or sand compaction piles are often constructed on soft marine clays. In such cases, some amounts of sand and clay are inevitably mixed. Sand or gravel often exists in the weathered soils near the slope surface. This research investigates the effect of mixing sand content on consistency limits and shear strength of clays. Firstly, sand was mixed with kaolinite or bentonite at 0, 9, 17, 23, 29, 33, 50% and then liquid and plastic limits were measured. Both plastic and liquid limits decreased as a sand content increased. The water content of clay-sand mixtures with different sand content increased by 10% or 20% step by step and then their undrained shear strength was measured using a portable vane shear device called Torvane. For all cases, undrained shear strength of clay-sand mixtures decreased rapidly until reaching a certain value. Their state changed from undrained to drained state gradually as the sand content increased, which caused their undrained shear strength to decrease. On the other hand, a series of direct shear tests were also conducted on such clay-sand mixtures to investigate the effect of sand content on cohesion and angle of internal friction. It was found from clay-sand mixtures that their cohesion decreased but angle of internal friction increased as the sand content increased.
The effect of quartz which exists in clays, especially in kaolin used for the production of chamotte sagger, on the strength of refractory was examined. In this study, a mixture of chamotte 50%, kaolin 25%, plastic clay 25% in ternary component system was selected as a batch composition. To this mixture 1%, 3% and 5% of feldspar and sericite were added respectively. The plastic clay used here was separated under 170 mesh by dry process. Feldspar and sericite were separated under 325 mesh by dry process. Feldspar and sericite were separated under 325 mesh by dry process. In order to change the particle size and the content of quartz, the kaolin was separated under 60, 115, 170 and 325 mesh by wet process, substituted quartz for coarse parts of it. Chamotte was classified into three grades, coarse (5-10mesh): medium (10-20mesh): fine(20-115mesh) and the ratio was 1:1:1. Samples were formed in 0.8xIx10cm size with 12.5% water at 160kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ pressure, and fired at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. The fired samples were ivnestigated by means of x-ray diffraction analysis and microscopic observation, and the physical properties of them were also examined, such as firing shrinkage, apparent specific gravity and bulk specific gravity, apparent porosity, water absorption and modulus of rupture. The obtained results are as follows: 1. When screened kaolin with low content of quartz was added to fixed chamotte-plastic clay system, the sample lowered modulus of rupture and increased apparent porosity as the size of kaolin became finer. 2. When kaolin under 325 mesh with 7.2-15.81% quartz between 60-325 mesh was added to fixed chamotte-plastic clay system, the sample had higher apparent porosity and lower modulus of ruputure as the size and the amount of quartz became larger. 3. The addition of feldspar and sericite to chamotte-plastic clay system improved apparent porosity and modulus of rupture. The effect of feldspar was better when quartz content was low, although that of sericite was better than quartz content was high.

The aim of this study was to investigate the bacteriophage removal in various clay minerals and clay-amended soils. Batch experiments in kaolinite, montmorillonite, and bentonite showed that kaolinite was far more effective at the MS2 removal than montmorillonite and bentonite. In kaolinite, the log removal increased from 0.046 to 2.18, with an increase in the adsorbent dose from 0.3 to $50g\;L^{-1}$, whereas the log removals in montmorillonite and bentonite increased from 0.007 to 0.40 and from 0.012 to 0.59, respectively. The MS2 removal in kaolinite-amended silt loam soils was examined at three different soil-to-solution (STS) ratios. Results indicated that the log removal of MS2 increased with an increase in the kaolinite content and the STS ratio. At the STS ratio of 1:10, the log removal of MS2 increased from 2.33 to 2.80 with an increase in the kaolinite content from 0% to 10% in kaolinite-amended soils. The log removals of MS2 at the STS ratios of 1:2 and 1:1 increased from 2.84 to 3.47 and from 3.46 to 4.76, respectively, with an increase in the kaolinite content from 0% to 10%. Results also indicated that the log removals of PhiX174 and $Q{\beta}$ in kaolinite-amended soils were similar to each other, but they were far lower than those of MS2 at all the kaolinite contents. The log removal of PhiX174 increased from 0.16 to 0.32, whereas the log removal of $Q{\beta}$ changed from 0.17 to 0.22 with an increase in the kaolinite content from 0% to 10%.
We conducted uniaxial consolidation tests in mudstone samples with different clay content, in order to investigate time-dependent deformation and its characteristics. A significant amount of time-dependent strain was observed at a constant stress level immediately after a jump of stress was applied. For a given mudstone, the amount of time-dependent deformation was nearly proportional to the increment of stress, suggesting a linear viscous rheology. The amount of time-dependent strain increases with clay content, implying that clay plays an important role in creep of the unconsolidated mudstone. A power-law model was suitably applied to our results, suggesting that a short-term prediction of time-dependent deformation of the mudstone is tentatively feasible.
In this study, the infiltration behavior of slopes composed of mixed soils with clay contents of 0%, 5%, and 10% in weathered Gneiss soil, which is a representative weathered soil in Korea, was investigated, and the stability of unsaturated slopes due to rainfall infiltration was examined. For this, in this study, the soil water characteristic curve was obtained through the water retention test, and the strength constant was obtained through the triaxial compression test. Based on the obtained results, the influence of clay content and antecedent rainfall effect (i.e., initial suction) on the formation of saturated zone (i.e., wetting band) and slope stability due to rainfall infiltration was examined through infiltration and stability analyses. As a result, it was found that the hig her the initial suction, the slower the formation of the saturated zone on the slope. In addition, it was found that as the clay content increases, the shear strength of the ground increases and the resistance to rainfall infiltration increases, and eventually the slope stability is greatly improved.
To investigate the reinforcing effect of subsurface layers of marine dredged clay(DMC) mixed with the micro-fiber(MF), a series of laboratory tests were performed on the DMC specimens with and without MF through uniaxial and triaxial compression tests. For the test programme, the elapsed time after dredging of marine clay, mixing rate and length of MF, and curing time of the composite were chosen as the important factors affecting the strength behaviour. The strength of the DMC mixed with MF and waste lime(WL) used for the admixture was found to be enhanced with the increasing content and length of MF, and with decreasing water content of DMC. MF and WL were applied as materials for trafficability improvement of the very soft reclaimed ground by DMC.

224 profiles representing 19 soil series were subjected to multiple regresion analysis to determine the relative contribution of organic matter(OM) and clay content to total cation exchange capacity(CEC) in sandy soil. The independent variables were OM and clay, with the dependent variable CEC. Simple correlation coefficients showed high significance at CEC-OM and CEC-clay. The partial regression coefficients indicated that CEC for each gram of OM was calculated to be 0.549 and 1.351 meq of top and subsoil. The clay contributions of top and subsoil were 0.247 and 0.226 meq, respectively. The standard partial regression coefficients appeared that clay content was 1.23 times as important as orgnic matter in predicting CEC.

Dredged soil from sea has much higher water content than liquid limit of clay and even if small loads apply, it will suffer a great settlement. Therefore it is very difficult to perform a consolidation test with general consolidation apparatus because of high water content. In this study Rowe Cell Apparatus consolidation tests have been performed with 1 remolding clay of water content 56% and 4 slurry clays of a water content of 100%, 120%, 133% and 150%. From the test results the consolidation characteristics such as compression index, secondary compression index and consolidation coefficient have been investigated with a variation of water content of dredged soil. The equations to get consolidation constants such as a compression index, a consolidation coefficient have been proposed with the field water content.
The purpose of this research is evaluation of adsorption capacity of the cast for TCE comparing with the yellow clay. Furthermore, the experimental data was fitted with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm and was found to be apllicable to the adsorption isotherm equation. The soil bed reactor used in this study was made of glass(10 cm in diameter, 100 cm in depth). The cast and yellow clay used as adsorbents were screened with 8-20 mesh mecanically. Results from Equilibrium test with adsorbents showed that the equibrium time of the cast and yellow clay was 9min independent of the amount of the adsorbents. The adsorption efficiencys of the cast and yellow clay for TCE was 66.3% and 56.2%, respectively. In the application of Freundlich isotherm, 1/n of the cast and yellow clay were 0.786 and 0.704, respectively. These results showed that the cast was more available than the yellow clay as TCE adsorbent. The best adsorption capacity was showed at 0% moisture content, 70 ppm inlet concentration and 25$^{\circ}$C temperature.

As the preliminary works for the preparation of exfoliated nanocomposites by reactive extrusion (REX) the modified anionic polymerization proceeded in a flask using an $\varepsilon$-caprolactam, catalyst, initiator, and clay. Polymerization methods were classified with a variation of the clay adding time. Intercalations mechanism of clay layers was investigated by measuring the WAXD peaks of clay with polymerization. In the preparation of nanocomposites, the molecular weight of nylon 6 was affected by the clay content. From the mechanical property measurement, improved properties were obtained in comparison to the neat nylon 6, and these properties were also affected by the molecular weight.
