Structural MRI(sMRI) imaging is used to extract morphometric features after Grey Matter (GM), White Matter (WM) for several univariate and multivariate method, and Cerebro-spinal Fluid (CSF) segmentation. A new approach is applied for the diagnosis of very mild to mild AD. We propose the classification method of Alzheimer disease patients from normal controls by combining morphometric features and Gaussian Mixture Models parameters along with MMSE (Mini Mental State Examination) score. The combined features are fed into Multi-kernel SVM classifier after getting rid of curse of dimensionality using principal component analysis. The experimenral results of the proposed diagnosis method yield up to 96% stratification accuracy with Multi-kernel SVM along with high sensitivity and specificity above 90%.

A Sitting posture is a very important issue for moderns who is mostly sedentary. Also, a wrong sitting posture causes back-pain and spinal disease. Many researchers have been proposed numerous approaches that classifying and monitoring for a sitting posture. In this paper, we proposed a real-time sitting posture monitoring system that was developed to measure pressure distribution in the human body. The proposed system consists of a pressure sensing module (six pressure sensors), data acquisition and processing module, a communication module and a display module for an individual sitting posture monitoring. The developed monitoring system can classify into five sitting postures, such as a correct sitting, sitting on forward inclination, leaning back sitting, sitting with a right leg crossed and a left leg crossed. In addition, when a user deviates from the correct posture, an alarm function is activated. We selected two kinds of chairs, one is rigid material and fixed form, the other one is a soft material and can adjust the height of a chair. In the experiments, we observed appearance changes for subjects in consequence of a comparison between before the correction of posture and after the correction of posture when using the proposed system. The data from twenty four subjects has been classified with a proposed classifier, achieving an average accuracy of 83.85%, 94.56% when the rigid chair and the soft chair, respectively.
Every year, several typhoons hit the Korean peninsula and cause severe damage. For the prevention and accurate estimation of these damages, real time or almost real time flood information is essential. Because of weather conditions, images taken by optic sensors or LIDAR are sometimes not appropriate for an accurate estimation of water areas during typhoon. In this case SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) images which are independent of weather condition can be useful for the estimation of flood areas. To get detailed information about floods from satellite imagery, accurate classification of water areas is the most important step. A commonly- and widely-used classification methods is the ML(Maximum Likelihood) method which assumes that the distribution of brightness values of the images follows a Gaussian distribution. The distribution of brightness values of the SAR image, however, usually does not follow a Gaussian distribution. For this reason, in this study the ANN (Artificial Neural Networks) method independent of the statistical characteristics of images is applied to the SAR imagery. RADARS A TSAR images are primarily used for extraction of water areas, and DEM (Digital Elevation Model) is used as supplementary data to evaluate the ground undulation effect. Water areas are also extracted from KOMPSAT image achieved by optic sensors for comparison purpose. Both ANN and ML methods are applied to flat and mountainous areas to extract water areas. The estimated areas from satellite imagery are compared with those of manually extracted results. As a result, the ANN classifier performs better than the ML method when only the SAR image was used as input data, except for mountainous areas. When DEM was used as supplementary data for classification of SAR images, there was a 5.64% accuracy improvement for mountainous area, and a similar result of 0.24% accuracy improvement for flat areas using artificial neural networks.

Many studies are focused on image data and classifier for comparison or improvement of classification accuracy. Therefore studies are needed aspect of the training samples on supervised classification which depend on reference data or skill of analyst. This study tries to assess usability of field spectra as training samples on supervised classification. Classification accuracies of hyperspectral and multispectral images were assessed using training samples from image itself and field spectra, respectively. The results shown about 90% accuracy with training sample collected from image. Using field spectra as training sample, accuracy was decreased 10%p for hyperspectral image, and 20%p for multispectral image. Especially, some classes shown very low accuracies due to similar spectral characteristics on multispectral image. Therefore, field spectra might be used as training samples on classification of hyperspectral image, although it has limitation for multispectral image.

The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether event tracking is more effective in event retrieval than information filtering. This study examined the two techniques for event retrieval to suggest the more effective one. The event-retrieval performances of the event tracking technique based on a kNN classifier and the query-based information filtering technique were compared. Two event tracking experiments, one with the static training set and the other with the dynamic training set , were carried out. Two information filtering experiments, one with initial queries and the other with refined queries, were also carried out to evaluate the event-retrieval effectiveness. We found that the event tracking technique with the static training set performed better than on with the dynamic training set. It was also found that the information fitering technique using intial queries performed better than one using the refined queries. In conclusion, the comparison of the best cases of event tracking and information filtering revealed that the information filtering technique outperformed the event tracking technique in event retrieval.
A hypernetwork is a generalized hypo-graph and a probabilistic graphical model based on evolutionary learning. Hypernetwork models have been applied to various domains including pattern recognition and bioinformatics. Nevertheless, conventional hypernetwork models have the limitation that they can manage data with categorical or discrete attibutes only since the learning method of hypernetworks is based on equality comparison of hyperedges with learned data. Therefore, real-valued data need to be discretized by preprocessing before learning with hypernetworks. However, discretization causes inevitable information loss and possible decrease of accuracy in pattern classification. To overcome this weakness, we propose a novel feature-wise L1-distance based method for real-valued attributes in learning hypernetwork models in this study. We show that the proposed model improves the classification accuracy compared with conventional hypernetworks and it shows competitive performance over other machine learning methods.

Artificial neural network has been used for damage assessment by many researchers, but there are still some barriers that must be overcome to improve its accuracy and efficiency. The major problems associated with the conventional artificial neural network, especially the Back Propagation Neural Network(BPNN), are on the need of many training patterns and on the ambiguous relationship between neural network architecture and the convergence of solution. Therefore, the number of hidden layers and nodes in one hidden layer would be determined by trial and error. Also, it takes a lot of time to prepare many training patterns and to determine the optimum architecture of neural network. To overcome these drawbacks, the PNN can be used as a pattern classifier. In this paper, the PNN is used numerically to detect damage in a plate girder railway bridge. Also, the comparison between mode shapes and natural frequencies of the structure is investigated to select the appropriate training pattern for the damage detection in the railway bridge.

Plant diseases are a significant yield and quality constraint for farmers around the world due to their severe impact on agricultural productivity. Such losses can have a substantial impact on the economy which causes a reduction in farmer's income and higher prices for consumers. Further, it may also result in a severe shortage of food ensuing violent hunger and starvation, especially, in less-developed countries where access to disease prevention methods is limited. This research presents an investigation of Directional Local Quinary Patterns (DLQP) as a feature descriptor for plants leaf disease detection and Support Vector Machine (SVM) as a classifier. The DLQP as a feature descriptor is specifically the first time being used for disease detection in horticulture. DLQP provides directional edge information attending the reference pixel with its neighboring pixel value by involving computation of their grey-level difference based on quinary value (-2, -1, 0, 1, 2) in 0°, 45°, 90°, and 135° directions of selected window of plant leaf image. To assess the robustness of DLQP as a texture descriptor we used a research-oriented Plant Village dataset of Tomato plant (3,900 leaf images) comprising of 6 diseased classes, Potato plant (1,526 leaf images) and Apple plant (2,600 leaf images) comprising of 3 diseased classes. The accuracies of 95.6%, 96.2% and 97.8% for the above-mentioned crops, respectively, were achieved which are higher in comparison with classification on the same dataset using other standard feature descriptors like Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Local Ternary Patterns (LTP). Further, the effectiveness of the proposed method is proven by comparing it with existing algorithms for plant disease phenotyping.
Background and Objectives: Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are flexible and nonlinear models which can be used by clinical oncologists in medical research as decision making tools. This study aimed to predict distant metastasis (DM) of colorectal cancer (CRC) patients using an ANN model. Methods: The data of this study were gathered from 1219 registered CRC patients at the Research Center for Gastroenterology and Liver Disease of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran (January 2002 and October 2007). For prediction of DM in CRC patients, neural network (NN) and logistic regression (LR) models were used. Then, the concordance index (C index) and the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) were used for comparison of neural network and logistic regression models. Data analysis was performed with R 2.14.1 software. Results: The C indices of ANN and LR models for colon cancer data were calculated to be 0.812 and 0.779, respectively. Based on testing dataset, the AUROC for ANN and LR models were 0.82 and 0.77, respectively. This means that the accuracy of ANN prediction was better than for LR prediction. Conclusion: The ANN model is a suitable method for predicting DM and in that case is suggested as a good classifier that usefulness to treatment goals.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the availability of software for rehabilitation with the Kinect sensor by presenting an efficient algorithm based on machine learning when classifying the motion data of the PNF pattern if the subjects were wearing a patient gown. Methods: The motion data of the PNF pattern for upper extremities were collected by Kinect sensor. The data were obtained from 8 normal university students without the limitation of upper extremities. The subjects, wearing a T-shirt, performed the PNF patterns, D1 and D2 flexion, extensions, 30 times; the same protocol was repeated while wearing a patient gown to compare the classification performance of algorithms. For comparison of performance, we chose four algorithms, Naive Bayes Classifier, C4.5, Multilayer Perceptron, and Hidden Markov Model. The motion data for wearing a T-shirt were used for the training set, and 10 fold cross-validation test was performed. The motion data for wearing a gown were used for the test set. Results: The results showed that all of the algorithms performed well with 10 fold cross-validation test. However, when classifying the data with a hospital gown, Hidden Markov model (HMM) was the best algorithm for classifying the motion of PNF. Conclusion: We showed that HMM is the most efficient algorithm that could handle the sequence data related to time. Thus, we suggested that the algorithm which considered the sequence of motion, such as HMM, would be selected when developing software for rehabilitation which required determining the correctness of the motion.
