  • Recently, some mathematical models for the prediction on progress of carbonation of concrete were reported. These models take account for $CO_2$ diffusion and chemical reaction between $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CO_2$. Based on the assumption that $CO_2$ diffuses in the carbonation zone and reacts with $Ca(OH)_2$ at the outer face of carbonation zone and non-carbonation zone. In this study, a mathematical model to predict the progress of carbonation of concrete has been established based on the reducing concentration of $Ca(OH)_2$ in the carbonation progress zone, where $Ca(OH)_2$ reacts with $CO_2$ and $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$ coexist. Also, the prediction model of carbonation progress rate of concrete using the air permeability coefficient regarding to $CO_2$ diffusion is developed. As a result of this study, an expression, the model equation is obtained for the prediction of carbonation based on the time and interaction velocity between $CO_2$ and Ca(OH)$_2$ dependent air permeability coefficient. The prediction by the model satisfied the experimental data of the accelerated carbonation for painted concrete. Consequently, the model can predict the rate of carbonation and the potential service life of concrete structure exposed to atmosphere.

  • Electrical resistivity survey (2D and 3D) were employed for detection of possible weak zone of core zones of three central core earth-rockfill dams in Korea. In the 2D results, the core zones is lower resistivity zone with less than $50{\sim}400ohm{\cdot}m$, and the basement is relatively higher resistivity zone with over $1,000ohm{\cdot}m$. In the 3D results, especially, the weak zone with under $100ohm{\cdot}m$ was detected spatial distribution area in the dam. We also drilled boreholes to collect soil samples of core zones of each dam. Water was not used during boring, because water for rotary wash boring could cause structural damages in earth dams. We found that the soil samples of core zones from all of the boreholes correspond to CL (USCS), but we also found that the fluidized or water-saturated soil samples were found in lower resistivity zones. Therefore, the electrical resistivity survey and drilling method without water are a quick and efficient method for structural-health evaluation which is detection of possible weak zones in earth core rockfill dams.

  • Soil nailing is ground reinforcement method using the shear strength of ground and the pullout shear resistance force of nail. It is mainly used for reinforcement of cut slopes, earth retaining structures and retaining walls, etc. It may be designed considering the pullout resistance of nail in the case of earth retaining structure and retaining wall, but it should be designed considering not only pullout resistance but also shear and bending resistance in the case of slope. However, conservative designs considering only pullout resistance are being done and most of the studies are about increasing pullout resistance by improving of material, shape and construction method of nail. Actually, Shear bending deformations occur centering on the active surface in ground reinforced with the nail. The grout with relatively low strength is destroyed and separated from the reinforcing material. As a result, the ground is collapsed while reducing the frictional resistance rapidly. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the method to increase the shear resistance while preventing separation of nail and grout body. In this study, an experimental study was conducted on new soil nailing method which can increase shear resistance by forming protrusions through pressurized grouting after installing a packer on the outside of deformed bar.

  • This paper presents LRB-based hybrid base isolation systems employing additional active/semiactive control devices for mitigating earthquake-induced vibration of a cable-stayed 29 bridge. Hybrid base isolation systems could improve the control performance compared with the passive type-base isolation system such as LRB-installed bridge system due to multiple control devices are operating. In this paper, the additional response reduction by the two typical additional control devices, such as active type hydraulic actuators controlled by LQG algorithm and semiactive-type magnetorheological dampers controlled by clipped-optimal algorithm, have been evaluated bypreliminarily investigating the slightly modified version of the ASCE phase I benchmark cable-stayed bridge problem (i.e., the installation of LRBs to the nominal cable-stayed bridge model of the problem). It shows from the numerical simulation results that all the LRB based hybrid seismic isolation systems considered are quite effective to mitigate the structural responses. In addition, the numerical results demonstrate that the LRB based hybrid seismic isolation systems employing MR dampers have the robustness to some degree of the stiffness uncertainty of in the structure, whereas the hybrid system employing hydraulic actuators does not. Therefore, the feasibility of the hybrid base isolation systems employing semiactive additional control devices could be more appropriate in realfor full-scale civil infrastructure applications is clearly verified due to their efficacy and robustness.

  • In recent years, the development of complex urban areas has become saturated and much attention has been focused on the development of underground space, and deep excavation is frequently performed in order to increase the utilization of underground space due to the enlargement of buildings and the high rise of buildings. Therefore, in this study, we tried to understand the behavior of the braced wall and the behavior of the tunnel adjacent to the wall according to the stiffness of the wall and the distance between the tunnel and wall. As a result of the study, the deformation of the braced wall tended to decrease with increasing the stiffness of the wall, and the axial force acting on the struts was also different according to the stiffness of braced wall. When the stiffness of the braced wall is small (2 mm), the point at which the axial force of the braces maximizes is near 0.3H of the wall. When the stiffness of the braced wall is large (5 mm), the axial force is maximum at around 0.7H of the wall. Also, the tunnel convergence occurred more clearly when the separation distance from the braced wall was closer, the stiffness of the wall was smaller, and the tunnel convergence was concentrated to the lower right part. The ground settlement due to the excavation of the ground tended to decrease as the distance between tunnel and braced wall was closer to that of the tunnel, which is considered to be influenced by the stiffness of the tunnel.

  • In this paper the effect of UV (ultraviolet) exposure on HDPE (high density polyethylene)-smooth and f-PP (flexible polypropylene) geomembranes is evaluated under UVB-313 (ultraviolet wavelength 290-315 nm) exposure. Tensile property, melt flow index (MFI), oxidation induction time (OIT), both standard-OIT and high pressure-OIT and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy/attenuated total reflectance (FTIR/ATR) results are discussed. Although tensile properties of the exposed geomembrane samples remained unchanged, the depletion of antioxidants was found higher for f-PP than for HDPE geomembrane. Arrhenius model by extrapolation was used on the data to predict the antioxidant lifetime to a typical site temperature of $20^{\circ}C$. There was no significant difference between the MFI value of the virgin and UV exposed HDPE geomembrane samples but a decrease in MFI was found in f-PP geomembrane that signifies that crosslinking has occurred. From FTIR spectra, the small peak (near $1750\;cm^{-1}$) observed in the spectrum of UV exposed sample corresponds to a carbonyl (C=O) linkage, which suggests that oxidation has occurred in the polymer structure, and another new band for f-PP between 3100 and $3500\;cm^{-1}$ is attributed to a hydroxyl bond and/or hydroperoxide bond.

  • The groundwater recharge was assessed by using both SWAT and HELP models in Bocheong-cheon watershed. The SWAT model is a comprehensive surface and subsurface model, but it lacks the physical basis for simulating a soil water percolation process. The HELP model which has a drawback in simulating subsurface lateral flow and groundwater flow component can simulate soil water percolation process by considering the unsaturated flow effect of soil layers. The SWAT model has been successfully applied for estimating groundwater recharge in a number of watersheds in Korea, while the application of HELP model has been very limited. The subsurface lateral flow parameter was proposed in order to consider the subsurface lateral flow effect in HELP model and the groundwater recharge was simulated by the modified exponential decay weighting function in HELP model. The simulation results indicate that the recharge of HELP model significantly depends on the values of lateral flow parameter. The recharge errors between SWAT and HELP are the smallest when the lateral flow parameter is about 0.6 and the recharge rates between two models are shown to be reasonably comparable for daily, monthly, and yearly time scales. The HELP model is useful for estimating groundwater recharge at watershed scale because the model structure and input parameters of HELP model are simpler than that of SWAT model. The accuracy of assessing the groundwater recharge might be improved by the concurrent application of SWAT model and HELP model.

  • Recently, there have been various domestic construction activities related to the reclamation of the dredged soils to expand the land use. However, the reclaimed grounds made of the dredged soils cause various problems due to highly compressible and low shear strength nature. Particularly, this nature induces huge problems in case of the harbor facilities and road construction on the reclaimed sites. Furthermore, in the reclamation activities, the marine dredged soils are often used instead of the well sorted sand, which induces problems of compressibilities. Therefore, in this study, the mechanical characteristics of artificial soil mixture of kaolinite representing the marine dredged soils and the pond ash. A large consolidometer is designed and manufactured to produce the artificial soil mixture. To represent various mixing ratio between the fly ash and bottom ash in the pond ash, six samples with the same stress history are made with different mixing ratio among kaolinite, bottom ash and fly ash. Isotropically consolidated and undrained compression tests are performed to investigate the shear characteristics of soil mixtures. Based on the experimental results, as the components of mixed ash increase, the friction angle increase and the cohesion values decrease. Also, the porepressure parameters at failure, Af increase with the mixing components of the pond ash. The portion of bottom ash has more impact on the shear behavior than that of fly ash.

  • The integrity assessment of the bridge behavior is generalized by field data of a static load-deformation curve and dynamic properties such as impact factors and natural frequencies. Evaluating it with numerical analysis is a reasonable method. The results of the mockup test and the numerical analysis are corresponded with each other since the behavior of service load proceeds in elastic region. In case of the dynamic behavior of structure, especially for the analysis of vibration, the result of the mockup test differs from the result of numerical analysis a little due to the geometric shape and non-homogeneous materials. In order to converge on these tolerances, this study suggested several numerical models, analyzed the sensitivity and finally offered a practical modeling method for the estimation of bridge on the basis of the result of mockup test. Based on the model substituted concrete section for strands section, the natural frequency of the model composed with axial stiffness of strands or the model applied the modified modulus of elasticity was closest with the result of the mockup test.

  • Modular system can be divided into two types based on the methods of resisting load. The one is the open-sided modular system composed of beams and columns. The other is the enclosed modular system composed of panels and studs. Of the Modular systems, the use of open-sided modular system is limited because it consists of closed member sections. In order to solve this problem, Choi et al.(2017) proposed a composite modular system with folded steel members filled with concrete. However, it was assumed in the previous study that the connections between modules are composed of rigid joint. Therefore it didn't identify the effect of connection behavior in structure. This study used finite element analysis to calculate stiffness of the connections in the proposed modular system. The linearization method presented in FEMA 440 is used for seismic performance assessment of structures, considering the connection stiffness computed in this study. The result of analysis shows that the capacity and story drift ratio obtained in the model considering stiffness of connection are less than those in the model not considering connection stiffness. Based on this observation, it is concluded that the stiffness of connection has a considerable effect on structural behavior.
