The objective of the study was to investigate factors associated with happiness among senior citizens residing in rural areas using the 2017 National Survey of Older Koreans. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted among 3,149 senior citizens living in rural areas using secondary data from the 2017 National Survey of Older Koreans. Happiness was measured by a single question and responses were recorded dichotomously. Descriptive and inferential statistics were computed at a 5% level of significance. Results: In all, 64.5% of the participants considered themselves as happy most of the time in the last 1 week. In the study, socio-demographic factors did not predict happiness except age. Satisfaction with a health status, financial situation, relationship with children, cultural satisfaction, and satisfaction with friends and society were positively associated with happiness among senior citizens residing in rural areas of Korea. Odds of reporting happiness were higher among those who traveled in the last 1 year, visited elderly welfare centers, and were involved in voluntary work than among those who did not. Conclusion: Happiness among senior citizen was significantly associated with life satisfaction with regard to health, finance, relationship with family, friends and society, and social activity participation.

  • The main objective of this study is to analyze which aspects between cultural budget or cultural activity (such as musical, theater, classic performance etc) will affect more to enhance the happiness of the local government residents. This study tries to analyze the effect of 'cultural aspect' on local residents' happiness because relatively there are not enough studies to analyze the relationship between culture and happiness. Especially, it is hard to find out studies focusing on both cultural budget and activities. According to the empirical results, the relationship between cultural budget and citizens happiness turns out to be statistically significant in the direction of the positive, while the relationship between cultural activities and citizens happiness does not turn out to be statistically significant. This finding can be justified for policy makers to increase cultural budget to make cultural city. In addition, the reason why cultural activities are not significant can be interpreted from the perspective of 'accessibility', 'degree of quality' and 'incompatibility of cultural demand of residents' and finally this study provides various policy implications.

  • In modern society, efforts to improve quality of life and happiness are emphasized compared to the past when economic growth was emphasized. The government has been implementing various policies to realize the happiness of the people through culture. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of Cultural Arts on the improvement of the happiness index of Seoul citizens by dividing them into demand (enjoyment) and supply side by setting Cultural Arts as independent variable, unlike existing limited surveys or literature surveys, under the control of change, the temporal range was set for more than 10 years and then analyzed quantitatively by panel analysis. The results showed that the demand for cultural arts affects positively on the improvement of happiness index of Seoul citizens, but the supply of cultural arts had a meaningless effect. In order to improve the happiness index of the citizens of Seoul through supply, it is necessary to supplement the existing space and to promote cultural demand through differentiated cultural arts programs aimed at diverse classes but also the policy implication that cultural indifference groups and active participation of cultural underprivileged groups should be increased.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Happiness is an important factor in life, and food literacy (FL) has been emphasized as a core concept for a happy and healthy life. This study examined the level of happiness of Seoul citizens according to their sociodemographic factors and their association with FL. SUBJECTS/METHODS: This study used the data from the Seoul Food Survey, a cross-sectional study conducted on 4,039 Seoul citizens from September to October 2021. FL was measured using a validated questionnaire consisting of 33 items from 3 sub-domains: 14 items in the nutrition and safety domain, 8 items in the cultural and relational domain, and 11 items in the socio-ecological domain. Statistical analysis involved descriptive statistics and multivariate regression analysis. RESULTS: Various sociodemographic factors, such as household income, subjective health status, and food insecurity, were found to be associated with the level of happiness. The level of FL was also associated with the happiness scores. After adjusting for variables associated with happiness, the participants with the highest quartile FL scores were 7.32 times more likely to respond that they were happy than those with the lowest FL score. Three FL domains and total FL showed linear increases in overall happiness after controlling for subjective health status and sociodemographic factors (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: After adjusting for the related covariates, higher levels of FL were associated with higher scores in happiness. Based on this study, it would be meaningful to evaluate ways to intervene in FL to improve the level of happiness among the general population.

  • Starting from common sense that happiness is a state where needs are satisfied, this paper suggests the intelligence and the virtues for democratic citizens. The fact that human beings exist, relate to each other, and undertake activities which can become of moral worth when joined by autonomy, equality, and responsibility, respectively, is explained. It is also discussed that happy citizens should be able to exist autonomously in the face of political power, make an equal relationship with political power and fellow citizens, and undertake responsible activities. Lastly, it is suggested that happy citizens should be able to understand the plurality of value-contents, the similarity of value-forms, and the possibility of value-realization, and then be equipped with self-respect, mutual respect, and law-respect.

Evaluation of subfactors associated with quality of life related to oral health showed significant differences in functional disturbances according to gender, age, the presence or absence of a spouse, and the use or nonuse of dentifrice (p<0.05). Physical pain significantly varied with the presence or absence of a spouse, educational level, monthly mean allowance, and regular dental checkups (p<0.05); significant differences were found in psychological discomfort according to gender, tooth brushing frequency, and regular dental checkups (p<0.05). There were significant differences in declining physical capacity according to gender, age, educational level, and monthly mean allowance (p<0.05); waning mental capacity significantly differed with age, living alone or with another person, the presence or absence of a spouse, and regular dental checkups (p<0.05). The factors that influenced the happiness index in senior citizens were age, living alone or with another person, educational level, monthly mean allowance and the Oral Health Impact Profile score (p<0.05). • So far, the rationality of management decisions has been limited to the economic rationality of maximizing self-interest. However, management rationality in the ESG era, which pursues the interests of the environment, society, and the company from the perspective of harmony and balance, requires new judgment standards. The goal of ESG management is sustainable development. Sustainable development goes beyond the accumulation of wealth, which was the goal of the past economy, and aims for the happiness of the entire society, including coexistence and fair development that develops together with the entire society. From Aristotle's perspective, the happiness of the entire society promoted by sustainable development is no different from the highest good of citizens, members of the community. Accordingly, this paper attempted to explore the new management rationality required for managers in the ESG era by comparing Aristotle's concept of citizenship with the concept of 'corporate citizenship', one of the main concepts of ESG management. Through this, we sought to show that companies are essentially communal entities and that the company's pursuit of profit requires rationality of balance and harmony with environmental and social interests.

  • This paper aims to identify the relationship between the number of teeth of the elderly and their life happiness index. A face-to-face interview survey was conducted with elderly residents of Dong-gu, Daejeon from June 27 to July 25, 2012. A Tukey post hoc test and correlation analysis were implemented after a t-test and variance analysis. The results of analysis showed that satisfaction with life related to oral health was significant, but happiness in daily life had no significant difference. For the elderly, the quality of life related to oral health and happiness in daily life had no significant difference. Masticatory performance difference depending on usage of dentures also showed significant difference (p<0.001). The difference of masticatory performance depending on the number of teeth was analyzed by a correlation analysis. The present number of teeth, present anterior teeth and molars demonstrated a correlation. Quality in life related to oral health depending on the number of teeth correlated with the present number of teeth, present anterior teeth and present molars.
