  • The resonant frequency of a gas-filled cylindrical Helmholtz resonator in a liquid is obtained analytically. The equation of motion of the resonator is derived by using the condition of equilibrium of forces acting on the mass in the neck of the resonator. The reaction force on the upper side of the cylinder due to the acceleration of external fluid and sound radiation is obtained by using the analytical results for the baffled circular-piston problem. From the frequency response function of the resonator, a formula to predict the resonant frequency of the resonator is derived. It is shown that the resonant frequency of the Helmholtz resonator significantly decreases due to the cushioning effect of gas inside the cavity. Therefore, when a pressure transducer is to be installed in a pin-hole type mounting method, much care should be paid to remove the gas from the cavity.

  • We recently demonstrated that both linear- and supercoil-form B1/B2 SINE (short interspersed elements) sequences could increase an integration frequency of a reporter gene in preimplatation mouse embryos. In those reports, when either a control or SINE-flanked DNA was separately applied to microinjection, the proportions of $\beta$-gal positives were 16% and 63%, respectively, in linear-form DNA, and 6% and 25%, respectively, in circular-form DNA. Here, we examined the contribution of a circular-form DNA moiety to integration frequency by using a mixed-farm (linear and circular-form) DNA in microinjection. When examined in the blastocyst stage, the proportion of $\beta$-gal-positive embryos was 17.3% and 46.6% in control and SINE-flanked DNA, respectively. These results suggest that there is little contribution of circular-form DNA moiety to the resultant integration frequency, and that the majority of the integration events are mediated through a linear conformation of vector DNA. In addition, some clues on integration process could be obtained from the analysis of microinjection results.

  • Flow characteristics and aerodynamic forces acting on an elliptic cylinder placed in a plane boundary layer were investigated experimentally. Four cylinder models with axis ratio(major axis to minor axis, AR=A/B) of 1, 2, 3, and 4 having the same equivalent diameter were used in this experiment. The Reynolds number based on the equivalent diameter $D_e$(=20mm) was 13,000. In the case of circular cylinder, regular vortex shedding occurs for the cylinder gaps larger than G/B=0.3 and is not almost related to the boundary layer thickness. But, for the elliptic cylinders, the vortex shedding frequency is increased with increasing the gap ratio (G/B) and the axis ratio (AR) of elliptic cylinders. The maximum drag coefficient acting on a circular cylinder is mainly affected by the boundary layer thickness. But, the elliptic cylinders(AR$\geq$2), except for the smaller gap G/B<0.2, show a nearly constant drag coefficient which is much smaller than that of a circular cylinder. The base pressure on the flat plate decreases with increasing the axis ratio(AR) of the elliptic cylinder. In the case of a circular cylinder, the base pressure has the minimum value at the gap ratio G/B=0.4, but it occurs at G/D=2 for elliptic cylinders. The mean velocity of the cylinder wake is quickly recovered at a small cylinder height ratio(H/$\delta$), but the turbulent intensity is rapidly recovered at a large cylinder height ratio(H/$\delta$). The effective wake region in the plane boundary layer is shrinkaged with increasing the axis ratio(AR) of elliptic cylinder. And the drag coefficient and streamwise turbulent intensity of the elliptic cylinder with AR=4 are less than half of those for the circular cylinder(AR=1).

  • The Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM) is a special case of multicarrier transmission, where a single data stream is divided into many subcarriers and transferred in a parallel way. It reduces the necessary bandwidth using the orthogonality between the subcarriers. Therefore it requires the transmission channel which has stable characteristic. When the delay spread of the channel exceed the guard interval, then the orthogonality of the subcarriers cannot maintain and as a result the system performance degrade. In this paper, the XCP-OFDM(OFDM using cross-handed Circular Polarization) system is newly proposed. This system divides the channel in order to eliminate the overlapping of subcarrier's spectrum by using cross-handed circular polarization. Therefore, the proposed XCP-OFDM system can improve the performance without increasing the guard interval. Both theoretical analysis and simulation results are described.

  • In this paper, a design method for a wideband square loop antenna for Digital TV applications is studied. The proposed loop antenna is a square loop antenna combined with circular sectors to connect with central feed points. The square loop is used instead of the circular loop in order to miniaturize the antenna size. The input reflection coefficient and gain characteristics of the proposed antenna are analyzed to match with the 75 ohm port impedance for DTV applications. The effects of the gap between the circular sectors and the length of the square loop on the input reflection coefficient and gain characteristics are examined to obtain the optimal design parameters. The optimized antenna is fabricated on an FR4 substrate, and the experiment results show that it operates in the frequency band of 470-1,300 MHz for a VSWR < 2, which assures the operation in the DTV band.

  • In this paper, the circular polarization microstrip patch antenna using the T-junction power divider is proposed. The operating frequency of the proposed antenna is ISM band of 2.4GHz and the circular polarization is induced by feeding a phase difference of $90^{\circ}$ in two edges. The structure of the antenna consists of a general patch and a T-junction power divider. Furthermore, to optimize the proposed antenna, it is analyzed the reflection coefficient, the axial ration and the radiation pattern. The impedance bandwidth of the antenna is observed to be 40MHz within a range of 2.39 to 2.43GHz, similarly, the axial ratio bandwidth is observed having the bandwidth of about 12MHz in 2.398 to 2.410GHz range. The radiation pattern of the antenna is seen to be right circular polarization. Furthermore, the gain of the antenna is observed to be 2.04 and 3.4dBic at XZ and YZ-plane, respectively.

  • Underground openings significantly affect the mechanical stability of underground spaces and create damaged zones. This study investigated the acoustic emission (AE) characteristics associated with the formation of damaged zones around circular openings. Uniaxial compression experiments were conducted on three types of rock specimens, namely, granite (GN-1 and GN-2), gabbro (GB), and slate (SL), containing a circular opening. AE and digital image correlation (DIC) techniques were used to monitor and evaluate the damaged zones near the circular openings. The AE characteristics were evaluated using AE parameters, including count, energy, amplitude, average frequency, and RA value. The DIC results revealed that the estimated diameters of the damaged zones of GN-1, GN-2, GB, and SL were 1.66D, 1.53D, 1.49D, and 1.9D, respectively. The average displacements at the surface of the damaged zones for these specimens were 0.814, 0.786, 0.661, and 0.673 mm, respectively, thus demonstrating a strong correlation with Young's modulus. The AE analysis with DIC revealed that tensile failure occurred in the direction parallel to the maximum compression axis as the load increased. Thus, this study provides fundamental data for a comprehensive analysis of damaged zones in underground openings and will facilitate the optimization of rock engineering projects and safety assessments thereof.

  • Many reports suggest that neurotensin (NT) in the gastrointestinal tract may play a possible role as a neurotransmitter, a circulating hormone, or a modulator of motor activity. NT exerts various actions in the intestine; it produces contractile and relaxant responses in intestinal smooth muscle. This study was designed to investigate the effect of NT on motility of antral circular muscle strips in guinea-pig stomach. To assess the role of $Ca^{2+}$ influx in underlying mechanism, slow waves were simultaneously recorded with spontaneous contractions using conventional intracellular microelectrode technique. At the concentration of $10^{-7}$ M, where NT showed maximum response, NT enhanced the magnitude $(863{\pm}198%,\;mean\;SEM,\;n=13)$ and the frequency $(154{\pm}10.3%,\;n=11)$ of spontaneous contractions. NT evoked a slight hyperpolarization of membrane potential, tall and steep slow waves with abortive spikes $(278{\pm}50%,\;n=4).$ These effects were not affected by atropine $(2\;{\mu}M),$ guanethidine $(2\;{\mu}M)$ and tetrodotoxin (0.2μM). NT-induced contractile responses were abolished in $Ca^{2+}-free$ solution and reduced greatly to near abolition by $10\;{\mu}M$ of verapamil or 0.2 mM of $CdCl_2.$ Verapamil attenuated the effects of NT on frequency and amplitude of the slow waves. Taken together, these results indicate that NT enhances contractility in guinea-pig gastric antral circular muscle and $Ca^{2+}$ influx through the voltage-operated $Ca^{2+}$ channel appears to play an important role in the NT-induced contractile mechanism.
