  • With uniform heat generation from the inner surface of the cylindrical heater placed in a cross flow boundary condition, heat flow that is conducted along the wall of the heater creates a non-isothermal surface temperature and non-uniform heat flux distribution. In the present investigation, the effects of circumferential wall heat conduction on convection heat transfer is investigated for the case of forced convection around horizontal circular tube in cross flow of air. The wall conduction number which can be deduced from the governing energy equation should be used to express the effect of circumferential wall heat conduction. It is demonstrated that the circumferential wall heat conduction influences local Nusselt numbers of one-dimensional and two-dimensional solutions.

  • In this research, a numerical simulation for the acoustic sounds around a two-dimensional circular cylinder in a uniform flaw was developed, using the finite difference lattice Boltzmann model. We examine the boundary condition, which is determined by the distribution function concerning density, velocity, and internal energy at the boundary node. Pressure variation, due to the emission of the acoustic waves, is very small, but we can detect this periodic variation in the region far from the cylinder. Daple-like emission of acoustic waves is seen, and these waves travel with the speed of sound, and are synchronized with the frequency of the lift on the cylinder, due to the Karman vortex street. It is also apparent that the size of the sound pressure is proportional to the central distance to the circular cylinder. The lattice BGK model for compressible fluids is shown to be a powerful tool for the simulation of gas flaws.

  • The analytic solution of the forces acting on a horizontal circular cylinder affected by the bottom boundary is re-derived using the complex potential. The reason of the re-derivation of the analytic solution is such that it is found that the analytic solution of Yamamoto et al. (1974) does not simulate the behavior of the added mass coefficient accurately. The re-derived formula of the added mass coefficient CD is different from that of Yamamoto et al (1974), while the re-derived formula of Cm simulates the tendency of the behavior of the added mass coefficient success-fully.

  • This paper deals with the free vibration of two identical circular plates coupled with a bounded fluid. An analytical method based on the finite Fourier-Bessel series expansion and Rayleigh-Ritz method is suggested. In the theory, it is assumed that the ideal fluid is filled between the two plates and the plates are simply supported along the plate edges. The proposed method is verified by the finite element analysis using commercial software with an excellent accuracy. The effect of the plate boundary conditions on the fluid-coupled natural frequency is investigated.

  • The solution of two-dimensional deflection of circular wavy reinforcing fiber elastics was obtained for one end clamped boundary under concentrated load condition. The fiber was regarded as a linear elastic material. Wavy shape was described as a combination of half-circular arc smoothly connected each other with constant curvature of all the same magnitude and alternative sign. Also load direction was taken into account. As a result, the solution was expressed in terms of a series of elliptic integrals. These elliptic integrals had two different transformed parameters involved with load value and initial radius of curvature. While we found the exact solutions and expressed them in terms of elliptic integrals, the recursive ignition formulae about the displacement and arc length at each segment of circular section were obtained. Algorithm of determining unknown parameters was established and the profile curve of deflected beam was shown in comparison with initial shape.

  • As a follow-up of our previous studies on flow-induced forces on two identical nearby circular cylinders immersed in the cross flow at Re=100 and flow patterns past them,$^{(1,2)}$ we present Reynolds-number effects on the forces and patterns by further computing flows with Re=40, 50, 160. We consider all possible arrangements of the two circular cylinders in terms of the distance between the two cylinders and the angle inclined with respect to the main flow direction. Collecting all the numerical results obtained, we propose contour diagrams for mean force coefficients and their rms of fluctuation as well as for flow patterns and Strouhal number for each Re. These diagrams shed light on a comprehensive picture on how the wake interaction between the two cylinders alters depending on Re.

  • This paper presents the free vibration analysis of a circular plate with a concentric square hole. The present problem deals with the numerical calculation of the natural frequencies and mode shapes of vibration of the structure by means of Independent Coordinate Coupling Method (ICCM). In this study, the boundary condition is the edge of the square hole is free and the outer circular plate is simply supported. Due to the geometric abnormality, this analysis does not permit an exact solution. Since the ICCM employs coordinate systems corresponding to each domain independently, the kinetic and potential energy expressions necessary for the Rayleigh-Ritz method can be easily obtained. Lastly, the kinematic relation is imposed. In this way, the eigenvalue problem can be easily set up. The numerical results show the efficacy of the ICCM and changes in natural frequencies and modes due to the square hole size.

  • The continuous circular cylindrical shells are widely used for the high performance structures of aircraft, spacecraft, missile, nuclear fuel rod shell and so on. In this paper, a method for the vibrational analysis of the continuous circular cylindrical shells with the clamped-clamped supports at two end edges is developed by using the modal expansion method. Forces and/or moments acting on the shell surface are expressed in terms of the Dirac Delta Function. Frequency equation of the continuous shell is also derided by the application of the equilibrium of forces and the continuity of displacements at the boundary. Natural frequencies of the continuous shell are calculated numerically with mathematica 3.0 and they are compared with FEM results from the ANSYS 5.3 to improve the reliability of analytic solutions. Mode shares obtained by the FEM are Presented in this paper.
