  • The effect of riboflavin feeding on lipid emtabolism in rat were studied. 70 male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 7 diet group ; control, riboflavin, cholesterol, MLHP (methyl linoleate hydroperoxide) cholesterol plus MLHP, cholesterol plus riboflavin, cholesterol plus MLHP plus riboflavin. After 4 weeks formular feeding sera of animals were collected, then checked cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid levels and lipoprotein by use of cellulose acetate papter. The results were as follows ; 1) Marked increase of triglyceride and phospholipid levels were found in the group feeding with cholesterol, cholesterol plus MLHP. 2) Combined riboflavin feeding prevented the increase of triglyceride and phospholipid levels in the group of cholesterol, cholesterol plus MLPH. 3) Also combined riboflavin feeding prevented the increase of $\beta$-lipoprotein fraction in cholesterol feeding group. Our results demonstrate that riboflavin has an inhibitory effects on the derangements of lipid metabolism due to administration of cholesterol, cholesterol plus MLHP.

  • This study was designed to investigate the hyperlipidemia-healing effect of aqueous extract from Mahwangimun-tang(麻黃二門湯) and it was performed on the hyperlipidemia of rats induced by high cholesterol diet and Triton WR-1339. We prepared two types of hyperlipidemia model in rats induced by high cholesterol diet and Triton WR-1339. The amount of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL -cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid, free fatty acid, the activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione were measured. The aqueous extract from Mahwangimun-tang showed significant decreasing effects on total cholesterol, LDL- cholesterol, triglyceride in the both model. And it showed significant increasing effects on HDL-cholesterol, the activity of SOD in both model. These results suggest that aqueous extract from Mahwangimun-tang has healing efficacy on hyperlipidemia induced by high cholesterol diet and Triton WR-1339.

  • This study was performed to find and compare the characteristics of dietary factors and obesity indices on serum lipid profiles using 407 healthy adult males that had physical examinations conducted at the general hospital located in Suwon. The subjects were divided 56.3% for the normal group, 16.7% for TG, 14.5% for TC and 12.5% for TC TG group, respectively. When comparing the blood lipid profiles to normal group, TC group was high in both total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, TG group was high in triglyceride and low in HDL-cholesterol, TC TG group was high in triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and low in HDL-cholesterol. In comparison of blood lipid profiles with normal group, among anthropometric factors, body weigh, BMI (Body Mass Index) and WHR (Waist Hip Ratio) showed significant differences. TC group was high in both total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, and TG group was high in triglyceride and low in HDL-cholesterol. TC TG group was high in triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, and was low in HDL-cholesterol. Body weigh of TG group was significantly higher than that of normal group (p<0.05). BMI and WHR of TG group and TC TG group were significantly higher than those of normal group (p<0.05). Total cholesterol was mainly related to the intake of animal lipids and alcoholic beverage. Serum triglyceride levels were closely related with lipid intake and high BMI in this group. In TC TG group, BMI and WHR were high. As well, serum LDL-cholesterol was high and HDL-cholesterol was low which indicates TC TG group had the most undesirable blood lipid profiles. Therefore, it may be necessary to manage BMI and WHR to prevent hyperlipidemia and obesity for adult males in Suwon.

  • The effects of Cordyceps militaris on the weight gain, the food intake, the food efficient ratio, and the lipid concentrations of serum, liver, pancreas, heart and aorta in male rats fed cholesterol diet were studied. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were received 4 types of diets for 4 weeks, respectively : a normal diet(without cholesterol), a control diet(hypercholesterolemic diet), a hypercholesterolemic diet supplemented with 3% fruiting body of Cordyceps militaris(CF), a hypercholesterolemic diet supplemented with 3% mycelium of Cordyceps militaris(CM). The body weight gain of rats fed the control diet were significantly increased compared to those of the rats fed diets with CF or CM. But, the hepatic and pancreatic weights of rats fed diets with CF or CM were heavier than those of rats fed the normal diet. In serum of rats fed the CM diet, the concentrations of total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol and the atherogenic index were significantly lower than those of rats fed the control diet. Also, serum HDL-cholesterol concentration and HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio were significantly lower in rats fed the control, CF or CM diets than those in rats fed the normal diet. Whereas, the hepatic concentrations of the total lipid, the total cholesterol and the triglyceride were significantly higher in rats fed 3 hypercholesterolemic diets than those in the rats fed normal diet. The heart and pancreatic concentrations of total cholesterol were the highest in the rats fed diet with the CR among rats fed experimental diets. In conclusion, the CM feeding decreased the concentrations of the cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL-cholesterol and the atherogenic index in the serum of the rats. But the CF or CM feeding could not decrease the hepatic concentrations of the total lipid, cholesterol, triglyceride in the rats fed hypercholesterolemic diets. • The effect of milk in low and high cholesterol diet was invesigated on serum cholesterol metabolism and lipid contents of serum, aorta, liver of rats. Weanling male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into low(0.01% w/w) and high(1.01% w/w) cholesterol-diets groups. Low cholesterol groups subdivided into four groups ; control group was given water and three milk groups were given low heat milk(LM), ultra-high heat milk(HM), and powder milk(PM), respectivily, instead of water. High cholesterol groups were consisted of three groups ; control, LM, and HM groups. After feeding these experimental diets for six weeks, lipid levels were measured in serum and tissure and dried feces were analyzed for neutral and acidic sterols. Results obtained from this study are as follows : 1) Nutrient intakes, body weight gains and aorta weights did not differ among groups, but liver weights were higher in high cholesterol fed rats than low cholesterol fed rats. 2) Serum protein contents were increased independently by intakes of high cholesterol and milk. 3) Serum total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were increased but phospholipid levels and HDL-cholesterol/total-cholesterol ratios were decreased by high cholesterol in diet. And milk supplementation decreased serum total cholesterol and triglyceride levels but increased phospholipid levels and HDL-cholesterol/total-cholesterol ratios. 4) Contents of cholesterol and triglyceride in aorta and liver were elevated by dietary high cholesterol and lowered by consumption of all three types of milk. 5) Levels of cholesterol and triglyceride among serum, aorta and liver were highly correlated (r=0.7-0.9, p<0.001). 6) Fecal excretion of total sterols was three times high in high cholesterol group, compared with low cholesterol groups and were increased about 20% by milk consumption. 7) The effects of milk were more pronouncely shown in low cholesterol groups and mostly confined to LM and HM groups, rarely shown in PM group. It is concluded from the present study that milk had the hypolipidemic as well as hypocholes terolemic effect, which appears to be mediated through increased fecal bile acid excretion. But the effect is likely to be shaded by excess consumption of dietary cholesterol and was almost absent in powder milk.

  • The study was conducted to investigated the effect of dietary levels of zinc (Zn) on lipid metabolism in cadmium (Cd) treated rats. Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing about 110$\pm$10g were divided into 6 groups. The Zn levels were low (0ppm), control (30 ppm) and Cd-treated groups were administrated with Cd chloride (5.0mg/kg of body weight) by oral intubation at the same time once a week. Serum total lipid, triglyceride , total cholesterol and DHL-cholesterol contents decreased significantly in low Zn group. In serum dietary high Zn group, it decreased significantly in the content of triglyceride but total cholesterol and HDL- cholesterol revealed increase slightly . Total lipid and triglyceride contents increased by Cd oral intubation, but triblyceride content of control group decreased significantly in Cd-treated groups. HDL-cholesterol content also decreased by Cd oral intubationl. Cd-treatment increased total cholesterol content in low Zn group. Liver triglyceride content increased as dietary Zn level became more increasing and total lipid was not influenced by dietary Zn levels. Liver cholesterol content was higher in low and high Zn groups than that of control group. Liver phospholipid content decreased in low Zn group . Oral intubation of Cd increased in the contents of triglyceride and total lipid. The content of liver Zn was not influenced by the dietary low Zn but that of serum showed a remarkable increased . Oral Cd intubation increased the Cd contents of liver and serum.

  • The study examines the effects of the Cnidium officinale Makino water extract on hyperlipidemia. For this, three levels (low, moderate, and high) of the Cnidium officinale Makino water extract were supplemented to six-week-old male sprague Dawley rats for five weeks. According to the results, serum total lipid, triglyceride, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol levels showed significant decreases (p<0.05) in the group with the Cnidium officinale Makino water extract. The serum total lipid level decreased by 8~22%; the triglyceride level, by 13~25%; the total cholesterol level, by 6~23%; and the LDL cholesterol level, by 14~25%. Total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the liver were significantly lower in the group with the Cnidium officinale Makino water extract than in the control group (p<0.05), and fecal total cholesterol and triglyceride levels were significantly higher in the group with the Cnidium officinalle Makino water extract. These results suggest that the Cnidium officinale Makino water extract in the hypercholesterol diet may reduce hyperlipidemia, a major cause of cardiovascular disease, by reducing serum cholesterol and triglyceride level in the liver through the facilitation of their excretion by feces.

  • Effects of the dietary supplementation of Codonopsis lanceolata root on triglyceride and cholesterol levels in the serum, liver, breast muscle and bile in male Cobb$\times$Cobb chicks were investigated. The chicks (15-42 days old) were fed diets supplemented with 0, 0.25 and 0.5% Codonopsis lanceolata root. No differences were observed in body weight, feed conversion ratio, gall bladder weight or abdominal fat deposition among the control group and the two treatment groups. Liver weights were higher in chicks fed a 0.5% Codonopsis lanceolata diet than in those fed the control diet (p<0.05). However, serum levels of both glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) were not different among the three groups. Broiler chicks fed either 0.25% or 0.5% dietary Codonopsis lanceolata root showed decreased serum levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol compared to the control group (p<0.05). Supplementation with either 0.25% or 0.5% dietary Codonopsis lanceolata root decreased the triglyceride and total cholesterol levels in liver and breast muscle compared to the control group (p<0.05). Biliary cholesterol increased by 15% in chicks fed 0.5% dietary Codonopsis lanceolata root, suggesting that the biliary excretion of cholesterol had been elevated by dietary Codonopsis lanceolata root (p<0.05). In conclusion, these results indicate that dietary Codonopsis lanceolata root can decrease triglyceride and cholesterol levels in the serum, liver and breast muscle of broilers.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of chitosan, chitosan oligomer and beef tallow of different levels on lipid metabolism in rats, Seventy male rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain were blocked into 10 groups according to body weight , and were raised for 4 weeks. Dietary fat levels were 20% en and 40% en, and chitosan and chitosan oligomer were given at levels of 05, 3%, and 5%(wt/wt) of diet. The results are summarized as follows, chitosan oligomer supplement decreased serum total lipid, as chitosan 양, and exhibited a tendency to decrease serum total cholesterol. Chitosan oligomer supplement tended to increase the HDL cholesterol ; total cholesterol ration as chitosan did. Liver total lipid and triglyceride concentration were lower in high fat groups than in low fat groups. Liver total lipid concentrations was decreased slightly by chitosan and sigfnificantly by chitosna ligomer. Epididymal fat pad total lipid. total cholesterol and triglyceride concentration were slightly decreased by chitosan and chitosan oligomer supplement, especially in high fat groups. fat absorptivity was decreased by low fat level, chitisan and chitosan oligamer supplement. Fecal excretion of total lipid and triglyceride were increased by high fat level, chitosan and chi샌무 oligomer supplement. However, fecal excretion of total cholesterol was increased by high fat level and chitosan supplement. This indicated that chitosan and chitosan oligomer were effective in interfering with lipid and triglyceride absorption, In conclusion, chitosan oligomer at levels of 3% and 5% has more effective lipid, cholesterol and triglyceride lowering activity than chitosan.
