  • Principal component analysis of the morphological characters was applied to ordinate and examine morphological variation of Enteromorpha linza due to differences in environmental factors. As results, the samples from exposed populations to wave action were characterized by having longer stipe and maximum length, and narrower maximum width than samples from sheltered populations. The results of multiple comparision in each character among populations provided further support for the hypothesized existence of exposed, moderate, and sheltered morphotypes.otypes.

  • The Shihwa constructed wetland was established for the treatment of severely polluted water from Banwoul, Donghwa and Samhwa streams. This study was focused on investigating dynamics of phytoplankton communities in open waters and periphytic algae on reed (Phragmites communis) planting area at 5 stations from October 2001 to July 2002. The concentration of T-N and T-P of inlet stations from the streams were decreased by flowed through the wetland. However, the TN/TP ratios at all stations were shown as a little over 16 indicating that the T-P will play some role as a limitation factor. Phytoplankton communities were identified as a total 413 taxa which were composed of 375 species, 21 varieties, 2 forma and 15 unidentified species. Standing crops of phytoplankton communities and chlorophyll-a concentrations ranged from $330{\sim}36,420\;cells/mL$ and $2.5{\sim}170.7\;{\mu}g/L$ respectively, and showed the decreasing tendency after flowing through the wetland at almost all stations. Dominant species were 14 taxa at all stations which were Euglena oblonga and Synura spinosa etc. Periphytic algae on the reed were a total 329 taxa which were composed of 295 species, 13 varieties, 3 forma and 17 unidentified species. The species numbers were recorded in order of Chlorophyceae-Bascillariophyceae-Cyanophyceae-Euglenophyceae-Chrysophyceae. The relative abundance (%) was showed a seasonal variation from Cyanophyceae to Bascillariophyceae and to Chlorophyceae. Chlorophyll-a concentrations, ie. the biomass of periphytic algae were ranged from $5.5{\sim}363.8\;mg/m^2$. Dominant species were 16 taxa which were Lyngbya angusta of Cyanophyceae in the early investigation, and were changed to Stigeoclonium lubricum of Chlorophyceae, and Nitzschia plea of Bacillariophyceae etc. in the late. Species number, standing crops and chlorophyll-a concentrations of phytoplankton and perphytic algae were shown higher values at the inlet stations than the stations after flowing through the wetland.

  • Overwintering and succession of phytoplankton community with physicochemical and biological characteristics were investigated in pilot culture system. Water and phytoplankton samples were collected twice a week from February 23 to June 28, 2016. A total of 17 overwintering taxa including cyanophyceae, chlorophyceae, bacillariophyceae were identified in the experimental group in winter (February), and these overwintering species showed a marked succession pattern along with environment changes. In the process of phytoplankton succession, a total of 56 species in 28 genera were identified in two (experimental, control) pilot culture system. In the experimental group, 52 phytoplankton species in 24 genera were identified, and the number of taxa was highest in chlorophyceae (35 species), followed by Bacillariophyceae (9 species), Cyanophyceae (5 species) and others (3 species). In the control group, 25 phytoplankton species in 14 genera were classified and these taxa consisted of 17 chlorophyceae, 3 cyanophyceae, 2 Bacillariophyceae and 3 others. The standing crops ranged from 40 to $325,450cells\;mL^{-1}$ in the experimental group, and from 900 to $37,100cells\;mL^{-1}$ in the control group, respectively. The dominant species were represented by Monoraphidium minutum, Microcystis aeruginosa, Rhodomonas lacustris, Ankyra judai and Chlorella vulgaris in the experimental group; and M. minutum and Coenochloris cf. pyrenoidosa in the control group. In conclusion, overwintering and succession of predominant phytoplankton species developed due to interactions of internal environmental factors(physicochemical and biological factors) in the pilot culture system.

  • The seasonality of phytoplankton in Dongbok lake was analysed from March to November 2003. The concentrations of TN and TP showed nearly constant level except high concentrations in May at dam site of Dongbok lake. Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration was highest at dam site in May with 225.3 ${\mu}g$ L$^{-1}$ and high in spring and fall and low in summer at upper and central regions of Dongbok lake. A total of 108 phytoplankton species was identified as an algal flora of Dongbok lake. They were 54 Chlorophyceae, 30 Bacillariophyceae, 12 Cyanophyceae, and 12 species of other taxa. Total cell biomass of phytoplankton showed peaks in May$\sim$June and August$\sim$September, and low biomass in July at dam site. However, upper and central regions of Dongbok lake showed no clear patterns in cell biomass. Maximum biomass was 7,158 cells mL$^{-1}$ at dam site in May with the blooms of Peridinium bipes f. occulatum. The general seasonality of phytoplankton in Dongbok lake was Bacillariophyceae-Dinophyceae/Bacillariophyceae-Cyanophyceae/Chlorophyceae/Bacillariophyceae-Bacillariophyceae in 2003.

  • The activity period and feeding ecology of the Iksookimia yongdokensis were investigated to obtain baseline data for its ecological characteristics in the Chuksan Stream and Gokgang Stream, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea from 2015 to 2016. I. yongdokensis were active on cobble, pebble and sand bottom from March to November when the water temperature exceeded $10^{\circ}C$, but tended to overwinter in cobble and pebble during the winter months (December~February) when the water temperature was lower than $10^{\circ}C$. During the day from 9 am to 15 pm, individuals of I. yongdokensis were highly active with a high rate of food consumption. I. yongdokensis activley fed on the surface of stone, pebble and sand as a filter feeder. Their main food sources analyzed with an index of relative importance (IRI) include Chironomidae (54.7%), Branchiopoda (10.1%), Rotatoria (8.7%), Arcellidae (8.6%), Chlorophyceae (6.5%) and Bacillariophyceae (5.1%). Juveniles of I. yongdokensis (total length 20~39 mm) fed on small-sized preys such as Rotatoria, Branchiopoda and Arcellidae, but they exhibited a transition in their prey-size markedly dominated by large-sized preys such as Chironomidae and Ephemeroptera as they grow.

  • We investigated the effect of the water quality on the phytoplankton community in the 2 sites of Andong reservoir. The water temperature in 1 m and 4 m depth (LH) was changed, but the temperature in 7 m depth (HD) was constant irrespective of the season. The dissolved oxygen in LH was lower than that of the HD. The turbidity of water and pH were similar in both depths. The concentration of chlorophyll-a decreased with increased depth of water. Fifty nine phytoplankton taxa were identified and the most abundant phytoplankton group was Chlorophyceae with 25 taxa (43%). Cyanophyceae and Bacillariophyceae consisted of 17 taxa (29%) and 10 taxa (17%), respectively. Cryptophyceae had 3 taxa (5%) and Synurophyceae and Dinophyceae had 2 taxa (3%) in Andong reservoir. Dominant species were Elakatothrix gelatinosa (Aug, 23) and Eutetramorus fottii (Aug. 23 and Sep. 28) from Chlorophyceae, Aphanizomenon cf. flos-aquae (Aug. 16), Microcystis aeruginosa (all sampling periods), and Aphanocapsa delicatissima (Oct. 27) from Cyanophyceae, and Cyclotella stelligera (Oct. 13), Cyclotella sp. (Oct. 13 and Oct. 27) and Synedra acus (Aug. 16) from Bacillariophyceae.

  • In this study, we compared the spatio-temporal differences of phytoplankton communities among 4 lakes in the Boseong River basin. Field research was conducted quarterly from 2014 to 2017 for this study. A total of 345 species of phytoplankton were identified including 107 Bacillariophyceae, 175 Chlorophyceae, 27 Cyanophyceae and 36 other phytoplankton taxa. Lake Boseong showed higher species numbers and density of phytoplankton than other lakes (Dunn's test, P<0.01). Bacillariophyceae such as Asterionella formosa, Aulacoseira granulata, Fragilaria crotonensis was dominated in most research periods, whereas Scenedesmus ecornis and Coelastrum cambricum belonging to Chlorophyceae were dominant species on August. The self-organizing map (SOM) classified 3 clusters with 10 × 7 grid and showed spatio-temporal variation of phytoplankton communities based on significant difference among each clusters. Total 31 species of phytoplankton were chosen as a indicator species using indicator species analysis(ISA) and reflected seasonal phytoplankton succession and diversity and density of phytoplankton according to nutrient concentration. Water temperature, Secchi depth, conductivity and DO were identified as important factors affecting the differences of phytoplankton communities in the studied lakes in Boseong River basin using non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS).

  • In order to evaluate the application of Algae Online Analyzer (AOA), an instrument of automatic measurement of chlorophyll a concentration, was tested and compared with the acetone extraction method on the basis of microscopic counting of phytoplankton in field water (Paltang Reservoir). We simultaneously conducted AOA operation and extraction method with the same water sample, to compare both results of chlorophyll a measurement. Phytoplankton were enumerated by inverted microscope with the Sedgwick-Rafter chamber, and classified into the genus or species. According to the AOA measurement, the diatom most (83.6%) strongly contributed to the total chlorophyll a concentration, followed by chlorophyceae> cyanophyceae>cryptophyceae. Overall, the results of both AOA and extraction method showed a similar trend and significant correlation (r=0.87, n=302, p<0.001), however, there were some differences according to the season and species. In particular, the relationship between AOA Chl-a density of the diatom (r=0.73, p=0.010) and cyrptophyceae (.=0.83, p=0.00154) were siginificant, while chlorophyceae (r= -0.13) and cyanophyceae (r= -0.16) showed no clear relationship during the study period. Although we can not fully understand why there was difference between both mothods, AOA application for alarming algal bloom and water quality management during the algal bloom appears to be very relevant. However, the further study or technical upgrade of AOA measurement is required, especially in the case of low density of phytoplankton or species-specific measurement.
