  • The effective removal of microcystins by chlorination was investigated on a laboratory scale. With an initial chl.a concentration of more than 1,000 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ℓ, the required chlorine dose for the effective removal of microcystins from the raw water was more than 8.0 mg/ℓ. Whereas, a chlorine dose of 3.0 mg/ℓcould effectively remove microcystins from raw water containing a chl.a concentration of less than 1,000 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ℓ. The microcystin removal was more effective below pH 8.0, plus the optimum pH range was unrelated to the concentration of toxic algal material. Although chlorination is one of the most effective methods for reducing the toxin from blue-green algae, it causes cell lysis and toxin release. However, it was demonstrated that the released cell lysates and toxins could be effectively removed by a higher dose of the oxidant. The highest removal efficiency of dissolved microcystins(initial concentration: 280 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$\^$-1/) was with a chlorine dose of 5.0 mg/ℓ.

  • Unusual bloom of toxic cyanobacteria in water bodies have drawn attention of environmentalists world over. Major bloom of Anabaena, Microcystis in water storage reservoir, rivers and lake leading to adverse health effects have been reported from Australia, England and many part of the world. These cyanobacterial cells can release intercellular matter like toxin in water and these intercellular matter can increase the concentration of organic matter. Cellysis can occur when algal cells meet the disinfectants like chlorine in water treatment plant and the resultant rising up of DOC(Dissolved Organic Carbon) or TOC(Total Organic Carbon) can increase the formation of disinfection by products. Disinfectants that kill microorganisms react with the organic or inorganic matter in raw water. In general disinfectants oxidize the matter in raw water and the resultant products can be harmful to human. There are always conflict about which is more important, disinfection or minimizing disinfection by products. The best treatment process for raw water is the process of the lowest disinfection by products and also the the lowest microorganism. In this study the cultured cells, Microcytis Aeruginosa(MA), Anabaena Flos-aquae(AF), Anabaena Cylindrica(AC), and the cells obtained in Daechung Dam(DC) whose dominant species was Anabaena Cylindrica were subjected to chlorination. Chlorination oxidizes inorganic and organic compounds and destruct live cells in raw water. Chloroform was analyzed for the cultured cells which were treated with $20mg/\ell$ dose of chlorine. In general chloroform is easily formed when dissolved organic matter react with chlorine. The cultured cells contributes the concentration of dissolved organic carbon and also that of total organic carbon which might be potent precusors of chloroform formed. The correlations of the concentration of chloroform, DOC and TOC were investigate in this study.

  • Formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) including trihalomethans (THM), haloacetic acid (HAA) and haloacetonitriles (HAN) from chlorination of extracellular organic matter (EOM) and cells + intracellular organic matter (IOM) of Microcystis sp., a blue-green algae, during decomposed period was investigated. Microcystis sp. cells + IOM and EOM of Microcystis sp. exhibited a high potential for DBP formation. HAAFP (formation potential) was higher than THMFP during decomposed period. In the variations of HAAFP species during decomposed period, the ratio of di-HAAFP species was gradually decreased and the ratio of tri-HAAFP species was gradually increased in the case of EOM during decomposed period, while the opposite result was in the case of cells + IOM during decomposed period. In the variations of HANFP species during decomposed period, the ratio of di-HANFP species was much higher than the ratio of tri-HAAFP species.

  • Formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) including trihalomethans (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) from chlorination of six different species (Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus sp., Anabaena cylindrical, Microcystis aeruginosa, Asterionella formosa and Aulacoseira sp.) of algal extracellular organic matter (EOM). The EOM characteristics evaluation of six algal species reaching at the stationary phase in the growth curve showed most of its SUVA254 showed below 1 and this means hydrophilic organic matter is much higher than hydrophobic organic matter. Chloroform formation potential (CFFP), dichloroacetic acid formation potential (DCAAFP) and trichloroacetic acid formation potential (TCAAFP) were mainly composed of THMFP and HAAFP in the EOM of various algal species. In the case of THMFP/DOC and HAAFP/DOC values, EOM of blue-green algae has appeared highest and EOM of green algae and diatom in order. THMFP/DOC was higher than HAAFP/DOC in EOM of blue-green algae. In comparison of formation potential by unit DOC composed of HAAFP in algal species EOM, DCAAFP/DOC was 1.5 times to 7.5 time higher than TCAAFP/DOC in the EOM of blue-green algae, while DCAAFP/DOC was found to be relatively high compared to TCAAFP/DOC in the EOM of green algae and diatom.

  • This study was carried out to assess the effect of the chlorine treatment into water for processing chicken products in each stage of slaughtering, with a special viewpoint related with reducing the viable number of microorganisms by which the water and the chicken body were contaminated. The mean bacterial number on chicken samples after picking process was log5.37$\pm$0.20~5.84$\pm$0.160CFU/$\textrm{cm}^2$. When assessed by standard plate count method, it was the higher one than any other processing stage in which eviscerating, pinning, packaging, and chilling was followed in order of the mean bacterial number. The coliform bacterial numbers on carcasses after sampling from different processing stages were log2.11$\pm$0.63~2.88$\pm$0.25MPN/$\textrm{cm}^2, which show almost similar numbers in each processing stage. But, after chilling process the number was decreased slightly. The bacterial counts in the water for scalding and chilling showed log3.43 $\pm$ 0.59~5.06$\pm$0.21 and log4.30$\pm$0.21~6.62$\pm$0.33CFU/$m\ell$, respectively. In the coliform counts for the water taken out from the 2nd chilling tank, the number was log1.97$\pm$0.35~2.91$\pm$0.22MPN/$m\ell$ which showed higher than those of the 1st and the 3rd chilling tank water. The effect of chlorination in reducing the bacterial numbers was accepted at the residual chlorine concentration of 1$m\ell$/$\ell$by showing the reduction from $10^8$ to $10^4$CFU level and the numbers were decreased less than 10CFU at the concentration of 5mg/$\ell$, when assessed by viable cell counts. In conclusion, these results suggested that chlorination In chilling water with final concentration of 5mg/$\ell$was strongly recommended to reduce the bacterial numbers on final chicken products.

  • The reaction rates of ZIRLO cladding hulls with cross-section openings were investigated using a thermo-gravimetric analysis system in order to identify whether selective recovery of Zr from oxidized cladding hulls is possible. The experimental results showed that an oxidized ZIRLO cladding hull was not reactive with chlorine gas at 400℃. However, providing fresh cross-sections on one or both ends of the ZIRLO hulls enabled a chlorination reaction. This reaction was completed after 8 hours; a 14% increase on the 7 hours seen with a bare ZIRLO cladding hull. The Sharp-Hancock plot analysis results revealed that the contracting volume model is the best for describing the reaction between the cross-section opened ZIRLO hulls and chlorine gas under the condition of this work. It was concluded that the chlorination process can be employed for oxidized ZIRLO cladding hulls by providing cross-section openings.

  • This study was conduct to the reduction and elimination of Limnoperna fortunei that problem in the facilities and water supply pipeline is done to review proposals for the controls. In order to effectively removal the larva and the adult of that, chlorination and being used to an existing method is to be commended. The water temperature of Limnoperna fortunei spawning season was ranged 16 to $17^{\circ}C$ during May to early November. A chlorination of this period is appropriate in order to control a larva. However, existing in the attached young and old shell at the same time consistently been deemed to apply, because it must be taken into account. The range of concentration of chlorination to control the biomass for Limnoperna fortunei was from 0.5 to 1.0 ppm. Proliferation attached to the mitigation or appropriate technology to solve the domestic situation the priorities of the choice of a more urgent. Also, the monitoring of water temperature and larva will constantly to be done. And development of larva monitoring method as well as after chlorine treatment is effective analysis needed. Finally, we are expecting to good use in validating the results presented in this study.

  • The chlorination of a metallurgical-grade silicon was carried out in a fluidized bed reactor, 25 mm in diameter. The flow rate of the chlorine admitted into the reactor was 0.2 L/min and that of the carrier nitrogen was 0.8~1.0 L/min. The reactor temperature was maintained at $450^{\circ}C$ and the temperature of the coolant at the $SiCl_4$ condenser was at $-5^{\circ}C$. The $SiCl_4$ yield increased with increasing the mole fraction of chlorine in the feed gas, exhibiting 28% at the mole fraction of 0.2. Further increase of the chlorine mole fraction was not attempted in a worry that the reactor might be failed due to the high exothermicity of the reaction. The production of $SiCl_4$ from silicon by fluidized bed chlorination was demonstrated on a laboratory scale, which is a stepping stone for future studies under more severe conditions toward industrial application.
