  • The pipe material is selected according to the physical and chemical properties of the fluid flowing within it. Because the fluid used in fire extinguish systems is water, the various foreign substances dissolved in it cause scale to form on the pipe wall and accelerate the corrosion and aging of the pipe itself. This results in an increase in the friction loss and eventually degrades the efficiency of the pump. The use of CPVC (Chlorinated Poly-Vinyl Chloride) pipes was confirmed to reduce the friction loss compared to conventional steel pipes in the design and construction stages. The friction loss was found to be 76.64MPa with a C-value of 120 for the steel pipe and 50.72 MPa with a C-value of 150 for the CPVC pipe in an actual apartment construction environment. It was confirmed that the friction loss was improved by about 34% when using the CPVC pipe. When the steel and CPVC pipes were employed in the construction, the construction costs were 1,585,158 and 931,842 won, respectively. Therefore, it was shown that the construction cost was reduced by about 41%. We investigated the safety of the fire extinguishing system and the improvement in the economic performance due to the reduction in the total installed capacity by studying practical applications in the field.

  • Various humic substances are widely distributed in natural water body, such as rivers and lakes and cause the yellowish or brownish color to water. The evidence that humic substances are precursors of THMs formation in chlorinated drinking water has been reported m the Jiteratures. For the reason of public health as well as aesthetics, needs for humic substances removal have been increased in the conventional water treatment processes. In this research, the characteristics of aluminium coagulation of humic acids and humic acids were investigated. The optimum pH and coagulants dosage to remove these materials simultaneously by coagulation were alto studied. The results are as followed; 1. UV-254 absorptiometry for measuring the concentration of aquatic humic acids showed good applicability and stable results. 2. The optimal pH range for humic acids removal by aluminium coagulation was 5 to 5.5, however, an increase in aluminium coagulant dosage could enhance the removal rate of humic acids in the wide pH range. 3. Coprecipitation of humic acids in the typical pH range of 6.5 to 8 in water treatment processes may require the sweep coagulation mechanism with the excess aluminium coagulant dosage. 4. Using PAC(poly aluminium chloride) or PASS(poly aluminium silica sulfate) as coagulants was able to expand the operating range for removing humic acids. 5. From the coagulation of humic substances(UV-254) and turbidity at pH range of 5.5 - 6.0 and alum dose of 86 ppm, the removal efficiency of turbidity from the reservoir water was above 90% and that of UV-254 was above 70%. 6. By using the reservoir water, the optimum condition of rapid mixing for simultaneous removal of turbidity and UV-254 absorbance was pH of 5.8 and LAS dose of 86 ppm, in this study.

  • The degradation of o-chlorophenol(o-CP) in the presence of NaOH and the byproducts formed were investigated in a supercritical water(SCW) destruction process. The conversion of o-CP in the absence of NaOH was less than 20%, however it showed 100% conversion in the presence of NaOH(mole ratio[NaOH]/[o-CP] over than 2) with a residence time of less than 1 second. The formation of PAHs and the phenolic compounds formed were decreased in the presence of NaOH. The results revealed that the formation of byproducts during the destruction of o-CP in SCW was effected by the addition of NaOH. Phenol, cresols, chlorinated phenols, PAHs, p,p'-dihydroxybiphenyl and oxygenated polyaromatic compounds such as 1-indanone, dibenzofuran and dibenzo-p-dioxin were detected in both conditions(presence and absence of NaOH). At the same time, in the presence of NaOH, 2-ethylphenol, o-hydroxyacetophenone, hydroquinone, 4-allylphenol, 3-phenoxyphenol and 4,4'-oxybisphenol were also detected. The observed results suggest that the destruction of o-CP in SCW with NaOH occurs through a number of complicated reaction pathways. Dibenzofuran and dibenzo-p-dioxin were also detected during destruction of o-CP by SCW. The above observation suggests that there may be a common relationship between the thermal incineration process and SCW decomposition process.

  • Reactions between chlorinated or brominated poly(isobutylene-isoprene) (CIIR and BIIR, respectively) and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane(MPS) were kinetically studied by gas chromatography in solution state. CIIR and BIIR were mixed with MPS and dibutyltin dilaurate as catalyst on roll mill and then the compounds were cured in hot water or atmosphere. From the gas chromatography, reaction order, activation energy, and frequency factor were determined. Crosslinking density and physical properties of moisture-cured CIIR and BIIR were measured. CIIR and BIIR were effectively moisture-cured and physical properties of these rubbers were comparatively good.

  • On the basis of the facts found in the previous report that chlorine destroyed cell membrane and stalk of Caulobacter crescentus and that the damaged cells abonrmally differentiated to elongate their stalks when the chlorinated cells were reincubated in fresh medium, it was suggested that there might be some ecological correlations between the level of water pollution and morphology and phsiology of Caulobacter cells. In order to determine such correlations in this study, 18 isolates of caulobacters were isolated from three sites of Musimcheon River which were gradually polluted by domestic sewages and 6 species were identified. Four cell types of bacteroid, vibroid, subvibroid, and fusiform is were isolated from the least polluted water at the rate of 43%, whereas only two cell types of bacteroid and vibroid were isolated from the more polluted waters at the rates of 7 and 10%, respectively. There was no significant difference in each species of Caulobacter isolateed from the gradually polluted river waters, except that abnormally long filamentous cells were occasionally observed in C. crescentus isolated from the most polluted water. Each species showed various responces to chlorine. The resistances of C. crescentus isolates to chlorine were proportionally correlated with the level of water pollution. When they were compared to C. crescentus CB 13 which had been adapted to laboratory enviroment, the C. cresucentus isolated from the most polluted water was more resistant to chlorine.

  • Ferrous cement hydrates made from hydrating Portland cement doped with Fe (II) were reported to reductively dechlorinate chlorinated organics and to reduce Cr (VI) to Cr (III). In this study, kinetics of nitrate removal by ferrous cement hydrates were investigated. Nitrate removal kinetics were characterized by experimental variables such as cement hydration, amount of cement addition, Fe (II) dose, pH, and byproducts. As a result, hydrated cement showed better performances than non-hydrated cement due to the formation of LDH (layered double hydroxide). Doping of Fe (II) into the cement was found to improve removal efficiency at high pHs by association with Fe (II) sorbed on cement hydrates as a reactive reductant. Reduction of nitrate produced ammonium as a major product, which accounted for 63.5% of the final products, and nitrite (0.15%) as a minor product. These results indicate that the developed media are effective as sorbent/reducing agents in the nitrate removal and the reaction mechanisms of nitrate removal are sorption and reduction.

  • This study was conducted to recover the aluminum from water treatment plant sludge containing alumina. The optimum reaction conditions about chlorination of sludge with $NH_4Cl$ are as follows: the weight ratio of sludge to $NH_4Cl$ is 4, the reaction time is 60min, and the temperature is $300^{\circ}C$. And the result of leaching time test showed that the highest yield of alumina at $160^{\circ}C$ was 96% but the result of leaching test at $160^{\circ}C$ was little better than that of leaching test at $100^{\circ}C$ while the leaching concentration of HCl was 4N. The optimum reaction conditions of chlorinated sludge with $NH_4Cl$, gave the highest yield of 95.41% based on aluminum.

  • The antibacterial effects of seed decontamination during presoaking before sprouting as an intervention step for eliminating foodborne pathogens on red radish seeds were evaluated. The effect of seed decontamination on seed germination rate was also evaluated. Red radish seeds were inoculated (at a level of 3 to 4 log CFU/g) with Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19111 and decontaminated with 20,000 ppm calcium hypochlorite, 50 and 100 ppm chlorinated water, acidic electrolyzed water, low-alkaline electrolyzed water, and ozonated water for 6 hours. The control seeds were immersed in distilled water. The germination rate was measured on each treatment for 48 hours. Treatments with 20,000 ppm calcium hypochlorite, acidic and low-alkaline electrolyzed water were more effective than treatments with chlorinated water and ozonated water. Immersion in 20,000 ppm calcium hypochlorite resulted in the largest microbial reduction (more than 3 logs). Treatments with acidic and low-alkaline electrolyzed water reduced APC by 3 logs and L. monocytogenes counts by 2 logs. After sprouting, APC and L. monocytogenes counts on seeds treated with 20,000 ppm calcium hypochlorite, acidic and low-alkaline electrolyzed water were significantly lower than the control. The germination rate ranged from 93.5% to 97.7% except for 20,000 ppm calcium hypochlorite (from 82.3% to 84.8%) after 48 hours. Although the treatments tested in this study will not eliminate L. monocytogenes on inoculated red radish seeds, the results show that rapid growth of surviving cells during sprouting could be prevented if red radish seeds are given a presoak treatment used in combination with a disinfectant treatment of irrigation water.

  • One of the most medically important snail species of Korea is Semisulcospira spp., a member of the freshwater prosobranch family pleuroceridae. The parasites that these snails transmit to humans are mainly Paragonimus westermani and Metagonimus yokogawoi. On the other hand, Semisulcospira snails are edible as a foodstuff in Korea. The present study was first aimed to detect out residual pesticides in the snails collected at the endemic and non-endemic areas of paragonimiasis in Korea and to make relationship to the detectability of larval trematodes shed from the snails. In addition, water specimens from the habitats where the snails were collected were sampled and analysed to elucidate environmental conditions of the habitats. This malaco-ecological survey was done at 7 endemic and 3 non-endemic areas of paragonimiasis for about more than 2 years, May, 1984 through October, 1986. All the water smaples both from the endemic and non-endemic areas of paragonimiasis showed normal ranges of the criteria of upper freshwater streams, with lower B.O.D. (0.4~2.0 ppm) and higher D.O. values (9.5~11.0 ppm) than those in the large river systems Infection rate of digenetic trematodes in total snails collected was 6.7%, but no Paragonimus cercaria was detected out at all even in the endemic areas of paragonimiasis. The ecological factors affecting Paragonimus larvae in the snails were also discussed. A total of 9 chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticieds was targeted to detect out from the tissues of snails. Out of 9 pesticides, aldrin, beta-BHC, p, p-DDT, dieldrin, DDE, lindane, heptachlor and heptachlor epoxide were eluted from the snails. The highest levels of the pesticides were mostly detected out in the snails collected from the Donghae-Chun area of Haman and the Kangwha area of Kyongki-Do, where the lowest infection rates of trematode cercariae (0~0.5%) were revealed. The possibilities that the residual pesticides in the freshwater animals including Semisulcospira snails might be transferable to humans were also discussed.

  • Oils and chlorinated solvents leaking to the subsurface are entrapped in the soil pore and these are called as nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPL). NAPL entrapped in porous media acts as a continuous source for surface and ground water contamination. This study visualized dissolution of trichloroethylene (TCE) entrapped in porous media and quantified the velocity of TCE dissolution using an image analysis technique. As the water velocity increased, the level of dissolution increased. The results imply that a TCE contaminated region having a high infiltration rate and groundwater velocity may result in severe groundwater contamination. Microscopic images of TCE entrapped in porous media showed that TCE present in the preferential flow paths was easily dissoluted into the water phase. However, TCE present in the stagnant flow region was visualized for long time. The results imply that TCE would be still present in the soil if TCE is detected in goundwater.
