  • Magnetite nanoparticles were synthesized by adding excess ammonium hydroxide to a solution of iron (II) and (III) chlorides. The surfactants of oleic acid and Span 80 were applied in sequence to the magnetic particles as a combined stabilizer, and poly-${\alpha}$-olefin (PAO) 30 or 60 was used as the liquid base with a low or high viscosity, respectively. The ferrofluids were prepared with the concentrations of 200, 300, 400, and 500 mg/mL, and characterized by density, dispersion, magnetization, and viscosity. The density of the fluids increased proportionally to the concentration from 0.98 to 1.27 g/mL and 1.01 to 1.30 g/mL with PAO 30 base and PAO 60 base, and the dispersion stability was 77-95 and 81-74% for the PAO-30 and PAO-60-based fluids, respectively. The observed saturation magnetization values of the PAO-30 and PAO-60-based ferrofluids were 16 to 42 mT and 17 to 41 mT with the concentration increase in the range 200-500 mg/mL, respectively, depending upon the content of magnetic particles in the fluid. The viscosity variation of the PAO-30 and PAO-60-based ferrofluids in the temperature range $20-80^{\circ}C$ was the least with the concentrations of 400 and 300 mg/mL, respectively.

  • An year-long survey of chemical water quality for Lake Eui-am in Kang-won Province, Korea, was conducted from June 1970 to May 1971 to study the water quality and seasonal variations of productivities in relation to selected physical and chemical environmental factors. A monthly series of water samples were taken at the deepest basin of 18m depth of the lake. Water quality parameters determined were water temperature, Secchi disc reading(transparency), pH, O$\_$2/, CO$\_$2/, alkalinity, acidity, Cl, hardness, Ca, Mg, total residue, total ignitious residue, COD, BOD$\_$5/, nutrients, total-Fe, soluble Fe, Mn and Cu. On the whole, the results indicate that the chemical water quality of Lake Eui-am is high, and vary with season. The lake water is characterized that higher levels of dissolved oxygen(8.6 ml/L in mean of whole water) or percent saturation of dissolved oxygen(114%), and of nitrate nitrogen (523 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L). On the other hand, CO$\_$2/(9.6ppm), chlorides(3.5ppm), Ca(7.7ppm) Mg(2.2ppm), hardness(28.5ppm), silica(2.4ppm) and BOD$\_$5/(1.08ppm) are quite low. In terms of nutrient levels, the lake water exhibit slight signs of eutrophication. The high values for nitrate nitrogen, soluble iron and Cu of the lake water suggest that there are some imputs such as domestic and industrial discharges to the lake.

  • Groundwater chemistry in Namwon area, Korea, was investigated to understand the contribution of geochemical processes on groundwater chemistry. For this study, a total of 279 groundwater samples were collected from 93 wells distributed over the study area. Higher concentrations of major ions are generally encountered in the shallow alluvial wells, suggesting that these chemicals are originated from the surface contamination sources. Mass balance analysis based on reaction stoichiometry reveals that the water chemistry is regulated by three major chemical processes: weathering of silicate/ carbonate minerals, input of C1/SO$_4$ salts, and nitrate generating processes. The results show that mineral weathering is the most dominating factor regulating the groundwater chemistry. However, the groundwaters with the higher salt concentration indicate the larger mineral weathering effect, suggesting that some part of the mineral weathering effect is also associated with the anthropogenic activities such as limes applied to the cultivated lands, carbonates (CaCO$_3$) in the cement materials.

  • The transport characteristics of deleterious ions such as chlorides depend on the pore structures of concrete and are the major factors in the durability of concrete structures in subjected to chloride attack such as in marine environments. In this paper, the effect of the pore structure on compressive strength and chloride diffusivity of concrete was investigated. Six types of concretes were tested. The pore volume of concrete containing mineral admixtures increased in the range of 3∼30nm due to micro filling effect of hydrates of the mineral admixtures. There was a good correlation between the median pore diameter, the pore volume above 50nm and compressive strength of concrete, but there was not a significant correlation between the total pore volume and compressive strength. The relationship between compressive strength and chloride diffusivity were not well correlated, however, pore volume above 50nm were closely related to the chloride diffusion coefficient.

  • The study of the corrosion inhibition of armatures made of steel conceived for reinforced concrete by sodium phosphate is the aim object of our experimental tests. Gravimetric and electrochemical measurements were carried in three different Mediums contaminated by chlorides (3% NaCl) with addition of increasing concentrations of sodium phosphate. Inhibitory efficiency reached 80% at an optimal concentration of $7,5{\times}10^{-3}M$, the results obtained using the gravimetric measurements are in good agreement with those obtained by electrochemical methods. However, the monitoring of the pH evolution after 24h shows in the three studied environments, that the pH decreases slightly at 24 hours from the initial pH at $t_0$, due to the presence of corrosion products which change the state of the final solution. Also, scanning electron microscopy revealed the existence of layers of apatite on the metal surface previously treated with the sodium phosphate which confirms the formation of a protective film around the surface of the metal.

  • To secure the anticorrosive performance of structures in the oceanic environment it is necessary to select appropriate finishing materials and thickness of cover. However, airborne chloride deposition varies depending on the collector used, and it is difficult to select appropriate finishing materials. For this reason, an eight-directional collector is proposed in this study through reviewing the differences between existing airborne chloride collectors and the new one. To analyze airborne chloride deposition according to the direction from which it flows and verify the performance of the collector proposed in this study, airborne chlorides were deposited on the collector for one year at five different locations in an oceanic environment. From the experiment, it was verified that in terms of direction, there were differences in airborne chloride deposition of up to more than 1.5 times. Based on these research findings, the anti-corrosive method applied can be different for each side of a building's structure, and this is believed to serve as an effective and systemic chloride resistance design.

  • Sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SSCC) of materials exposed to oilfield environment containing hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$) has been recognized as a materials failure problem. Laboratory data and field experience have demonstrated that extremely low concentration of $H_2S$ may be sufficient to lead to SSC failure of susceptible materials. In some cases, $H_2S$ can act synergistically with chlorides to produce corrosion and cracking failures. SSC is a form of hydrogen embrittlement that occurs in high strength steels and in localized hard zones in weldment of susceptible materials. In the heat-affected zones adjacent to welds, there are often very narrow hard zones combined with regions of high residual stress that may become embrittled to such an extent by dissolved atomic hydrogen. On the base of understanding on sulfide stress cracking and its mechanism, SSC resistance for the several materials, those are ASTM A106 Gr B using in the oil industries, are evaluated.

  • In order to verify the effect of Surface Coating Anode and Solar Battery anode system, accelerated tests in the presence or absence of some chloride content and cracks were carried out. The potential-decay, protection potential and corrosion current density of reinforcing steel in concrete specimen were measured to evaluate the effectiveness of the system. From the test results, the application of the system led to the satisfaction on NACE's criterion in all mixtures of concrete. Additionally it was found that protection potential and corrosion current density were satisfied due to the application of Surface Coating Anode and Solar Battery anode system.

  • Analysis of fly ashes from the MSW incinerators was carried out using XRF, ICP-MS and ICP-AES. It was found that the major elements of fly ash were Ca, K, Na, Si, Al, S, Cl and O by the XRF analysis. The XRD spectra showed that the fly ashes were mainly consisted with the chlorides, hydroxides, carbonates and also oxides of former elements. For the determination of minor elements such as Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, and Cd, we used ICP-AES and ICP-MS after microwave digestion and the results were compared with the result of XRF.

  • A chemical heat pump based on the reversible reactions between metal chlorides and ammonia gas is attractive alternative to compression system and liquid absorption systems in cooling and refrigerating fields. The advantages of chemical heat pump are no regulatory constants due to CFC refrigerants, utilization of gas, industrial waste heat, electricity, fuel oil etc. as heat sources and wide applications to energy storage system, large-scale energy managements for industrial process. The scale-up of chemical heat pump from laboratory prototype to pilot plants necessitates the interpretation of system performance and evaluation of dynamic behavior in the chemical reactor. This study contains the prediction of performance of chemical refrigerator according to operating condition, the dynamic simulations through reactor modelling, which is used for the calculation of reactive medium temperature and the conversion variation with reactor cooling temperature, and the effect survey of block parameters on the power of refrigerator.
