  • The deterioration environments caused by de-icing salt and airborne chlorides in the seashore, evaluated in the "Detailed guideline for safety and management practice of facilities (performance evaluation)", were reviewed in terms of penetrated chlorides into concrete on various road facilities. Target concrete structures, in this study, were 4 concrete barriers in Gangwon area, 3 concrete barriers and 1 retaining wall in Busan area, and 4 bridges in Gangwon-do, Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Busan. The deterioration environments were classified into three categories: direct and indirect de-icing salt attack, and airborne salt attack depending on the distance to seashore and the height of pier, and the penetrated chlorides in to concrete were analyzed. The results showed that (1) the regional deterioration environments were clearly classified by de-icing salt sprayed days (snowfall days), (2) the penetrated chlorides increased significantly when leakage occurred through slabs or expansion joints, and (3) the airborne chlorides affected to a height of 20 m concrete in the seashore, Busan. From these, it could be confirmed that the chloride ion penetration properties depend on the exposed aging environment, member location and height, and deterioration status, even on the same structure, so the selection of target members and location is very important in the inspection and maintenance. If the database of penetrated chlorides properties in various deterioration environments is constructed, it is expected that the proactive durability management on concrete structures will be possible in the field.

  • The first survey of the airborne chlorides along the nationwide coast of South Korea was conducted 18 years ago, and the area index of coastal airborne chlorides and salt attack environmental rating are being utilized in the design, construction, and maintenance of domestic structures. However, due to environmental changessuch as climate change and coastal topography changes, changes of airborne chlorides along the coast are expected to occurregionally and by sea area. Therefore, the second survey has been conducted since 2021. Inthis paper, we analyzed the seasonal variations of airborne chlorides along the coast by region and sea area for one year of the second survey. Additionally, we compared the results withthe survey results of Japan's coastal airborne chlorides, which islocated close to South Korea and has a similar climate, to increase the objectivityofthe analysis. The averageairborne chloridesin the second surveywas highest on the west coast, and the seasonal variation was also the largest on the west coast. Looking at the seasonal variations by sea area, the East Sea had highairborne chloridesinthe summer and autumn, theWestSea inthe autumnandwinter, and the SouthSea in the summer. In addition, compared to the firstsurvey, allsea areasshowed short periods ofsignificantly higher coastalsalinity and clearerseasonal variations.

  • In this study we developed the synthesis of high purity tungsten oxide from tungsten chlorides obtained by the chlorination of scheelite in a fluidized bed reactor. Within a minute of dissolution time, tungsten chlorides were almost dissolved in $H_2O_2$ solution. The proper dissolution conditions for the tungsten chlorides were as follows : $H_2O_2$ concentration 0.5%, dissolution temperature $15^{\circ}C$ and $H_2O_2$ amount to 0.5g tungsten chlorides 30ml. Under above conditions, the tungsten oxide prepared from dissolved product was identified as $WO_3$ and the purity of $WO_3$ was 99.53%.

  • The electric conductances of dilute solutions of alkali chlorides (LiCi, NaCl, KCl, RbCl, CsCl) in a series of acetone-water and formic acid-water mixtures were determined respectively at $^30{\circ}C$. The results of the conductances of alkali chlorides in acetone-water mixtures were analysed by the Debye-Huckel-Onsager equation and the variations of limiting equivalent conductances with the compositions of acetone-water mixtures were explained in terms of selective solvation of electrolytes. The conductances of dilute solutions of alkali chlorides in formic acid-water could not be analysed because of the strong ionic atmosphere of solvent itself.

  • 1-(carboxyalkyl) trimethyl ammonium chlorides such as 1-(carboxyundecyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride and 1-(carboxytridecyl) trimethyiammonium chloride were synthesized by the reaction of ${\alpha}-bromoalkanoic$ acid with trimethyl amine hydrochloride. In other hand, (carboxymethyl) alkyl dimethyl ammonium chlorides such as (carboxymethyl) dodecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride and (carboxymethyl) tetradecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride were synthesized by the reaction of alkyl dimethylamine with sodium chloroacetate. The four kinds of alky carboxy betaine such as 2-(trimethylammonio) dodecanoate, 2-(trimethyl ammonio) tetradecanoate, (dodecyl dimethylammonio) ethanoate and (tetradecyl dimethyl ammonio) ethanoate were prepared from 1-(carboxyalkyl) trimethyl ammonium chlorides or (carboxymethy1) alkyl dimethyl ammonium chlorides. The surface activities including surface tension, emulsifying power, foaming power, foam stability, deflocculating effect, effectiveness of wettability and solubilizing effect were measured and also critical micelle concentration and hydrophilic-lipophilic. balance(HLB) were evaluated. These carboxy betaines show good surface activities as O/W type emulsifing agent and detergent.

  • The rate of chlorine-exchange reaction of antimony trichloride with benzyl, $\alpha$-phenyl ethyl and diphenyl methyl chlorides in nitrobenzene have been determined. The results indicate that the chlorine-exchange reaction follows second-order kinetics with respect to antimony trichloride and first-order kinetics with respect to organic chlorides. Rate = $k_3[SbCl_3]^2$ [Org-Cl] The rate constants of chlorine-exchange of antimony trichloride with organic chloride increase in the following order of the organic chlorides. Benzyl chloride < $\alpha$-phenyl ethyl chloride < diphenyl methyl chloride The mechanism of the chlorine-exchange reactions has been proposed.

  • Volatilization of toxic heavy metals, especially, metal chlorides at elevated temperatures in oxidation conditions was observed using a thermogravimetric furnace since such metal chlorides used to be a cause for the disease of industrial workers by their toxicity and high volatile extent. Most of tested metal chloride compounds were evaporated or decomposed into gas phase at elevated temperatures ranged from 200~90$0^{\circ}C$, while CrCl$_3$ and NiC1$_2$became stable with converting into oxide forms. A kinetic model for evaporation/condensation could predict maximum evaporation flux and the calculated values were compared with real evaporation flux. The ratio of two fluxes could be explained as the fraction of impinging gas molecules to the condensing surface( $\alpha$ ) and obtained in the range of 10$^{-3}$ ~10$^{-9}$ for the experimented toxic heavy metal chlorides. This ratio might be used to define the volatile extent or toxicity of such toxic metal compounds. The schemes to avoid volatilization of toxic heavy metals Into the atmosphere were suggested as follows ; 1 ) controlling the compositions of metals and Chlorine produced substances( such as PVC ) in the treated materials using a reverse estimation from regulatory limit and characteristics of a processing facility, 2) Installation of wet type devices such as a scrubber for condensing the metal compounds.

  • The permselectivity of alkali metal chlorides through silk fibroin membrane was investigated at $25^{\circ}C$: The Permeability coefficients were found to increase in a sequence of LiCl < NaCl < KCl < CsCl. This sequence was explained by considering the partition and the hydrophilic membrane. The dependence of the permeability on the salts concentration was interpreted by means of TMS theory. The ionic mobility ratio of alkali metal chlorides through this membrane decreased with the increase of the Stokes radius. The Effectiveness of the charged density was found to depend on the ionic species. The greater the Stokes radius the larger the effective charge density of membrane.
