  • The dehydration schemes of rare earth (La, Ce, Nd, Pr, Sm. Eu, Gd, Y) chloride hydrates was investigated by using a dehydration apparatus. To prevent the formation of the rare earth oxychlorides, the operation temperature was changed step by step ($80{\rightarrow}150{\rightarrow}230^{\circ}C$) based on the TGA (thermo-gravimetric analysis) results of the rare earth chloride hydrates. A vacuum pump and preheated Ar gas were used to effectively remove the evaporated moisture and maintain an inert condition in the dehydration apparatus. The dehydration temperature of the rare earth chloride hydrate was increased when the atomic number of the rare earth nuclide was increased. The content of the moisture in the rare earth chloride hydrate was decreased below 10% in the dehydration apparatus.

  • Steel reinforcement buried in concrete structure in submerged zone does not easily become corroded due to lack of dissolved oxygen. For that reason, accelerated corrosion test in submerged state is performed with an electrochemical method, which is not suitable for actual corrosion mechanism and makes it difficult to find relevance with long-term behavior. In this study, accelerated corrosion test was performed with the temperature and chloride concentration as main variables in order to establish a method for accelerated corrosion test in submerged zone. Corrosion was determined by the result of reinforcement corrosion monitoring based on galvanic potential measurement and half-cell potential method. The accelerated corrosion test result showed that temperature had the most dominant influence. To determine the chloride content, chloride concentration by depth in the test sample was measured. With the same conditions, chloride penetration interpretation was performed by DuCOM, a FEM durability interpretation program. Also, a test was performed to measure dissolved oxygen according to soaking conditions of artificial seawater, which was used for verifying the validity of the accelerated corrosion test result.

  • In this study the prediction model of Chloride Ion progress rate of concrete using steel powder as an addition is developed, in which the reduction of not only the diffusion rate of $Cl^-$ but also the corrosion rate by replenishment of pore by corrosion products. The model is based on the diffusions of $Cl^-$ and its reaction with $Fe^{2+}$, in chloride attack progression region. The model can also explain the characteristics of chloride ion permeation resistance of concrete that the matrix is densified due to corrosion products. The prediction by the model agreed well the experimental data in which the concrete using steel powder, and it showed the lower rate in long-term age to Chloride Ion progress rate than the concrete without steel powder. Consequently the model can predict Chloride Ion progress rate of concrete exposed in the atmosphere regardless of the water-to-cement raito, the amount of the content of steel powder, etc.

  • In order to prevent deterioration of reinforced concrete structures exposed to marine environment, performance based durability design than the design by conventional deemed-to-satisfy rule should be concerned. For example, even though chloride threshold level, which is a major parameter for durability design, is defined as a 1.2 $kg/m^3$ in the Korean concrete specification, it shows that the chloride threshold level leads to over design in its real application so that realistic value should be determined for the performance design. In this paper, not only the probabilistic properties of chloride threshold level obtained from published data are taken into account, but also the experimental results of the probabilistic properties using surface chloride content, diffusion coefficient, cover depth are considered in the assessment utilizing the concept of performance based durability design. In computation, the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) is used to perform an assessment due to chloride attack for a target submerged tunnel box. This study found that the specification on current chloride threshold level should be modified for more rational and accurate assessment and design.

  • The effect of methylene chloride/1,3-dioxolane co-solvent on the crystallization in the optical polycarbonate film was investigated. Increasing 1,3-dioxolane content in co-solvent resulted in the crystallization due to the lowering of solvent evaporation rate during film drying process. The crystallization in PC film could be minimized by either controlling of solvent composition and increasing solvent drying temperature. It was found that the surface roughness of solution casting PC film was affected by both crystallization and solvent evaporation rate. This morphological effect by alternative solvent is ascribed to a large decrease in light transmissivity on the optical PC film.

  • This study was analyzed the relationship between concrete slump, compressive strength and other factors such as the quantity of chloride or others using statistics method. The amount of chloride in cement was selected to range from 236 to 794 ppm, and cement that satisfied the KS L 5201 standard for other physical properties was used for this experiment. As a result, no factors had a interrelationship for initial slump and the strong-negative correlation between concrete slump elapsed time and the quantity of chloride. The proportion of chloride was shown as a strong-positive correlation for compressive strength from 1-day to 7-day curing. However, there was no correlation between chloride and compressive strength at 28-day curing.

  • The present study aimed to investigate the effect of calcium chloride($CaCl_2$) on the growth and physiological responses of Pinus strobus and the variables that are sensitive to $CaCl_2$. Thus, changes in the visible damage, growth of root collar diameter, plant water content, chlorophyll content and composition, maximum PS II photochemical efficiency, and electron transport rate of P. strobus was analyzed in relation to treatment witih $CaCl_2$. A $CaCl_2$ solution(0.5, 1.0 and 3.0%) was applied in the root zone before leaf unfolding. Leaf browning, defoliation, and drying were observed with $CaCl_2$ application and this pattern was aggravated as the $CaCl_2$ concentration increased and the treatment period became longer. The decrease of growth in root collar diameter and height and leaf water content were observed at $CaCl_2$ 1.0% and 3.0%. The total chlorophyll content indicated that photopigment, PS II photochemical efficiency and electron transport rate significantly decreased at $CaCl_2$ 3.0%. In conclusion, $CaCl_2$ affected leaf water content and led to a decrease of capability in light harvesting and photochemical responses. Also, as a result of the correlation between calcium chloride concentration and growth and physiological response parameters, it was found that the leaf moisture content and the ratio of chlorophyll a and b reflect the damage level of calcium chloride sensitively because their coefficient of determinations were relatively high.

  • Recently, the coal-ash production has been increased by increase of consumption of electric power. So it is important to secure a reclaimed land and treatment utility for coal-ash. This is an experimental study to compare and analyze the engineering properties of concrete according to W/C and replacement ratio of bottom ash. For this purpose, the mix proportions of concrete according to W/C(40, 50, 60%) and replacement ratio of bottom ash(0, 10, 20, 35, 50%) were established, and then tested for slump, chloride content, setting time, bleeding content, compressive strength. Also the durability test of concrete with W/E 60% was performed. According to test results, it was found that the bleeding content of concrete decreased as the replacement ratio of bottom ash increased. And the chloride content of concrete using the bottom ash increased as the replacement ratio of bottom ash increased, but it is satisfied with the chloride content of fresh concrete $0.30kg/m^3$ below("concrete standard specification" regulation value). The compressive strength of concrete using the bottom ash was similar to that of BA0 concrete after 28 days of curing and the carbonation depth of concrete was increased according to increase of the replacement ratio of bottom ash.

  • Effects of residual chloride on thermal decomposition behaviour of a-stannic acid and physical properties of $SnO_{2}$ powder were observed. The powder was fabricated by hydroxide method; $\alpha$-stannic acid was precipitated by mixing acqueous solutions of $SnCl_{4}$ and $NH_{4}$OH . The precipitate was washed with $NH_{4}NO_{3}$ solution while washing was controlled to be of three grades to modify its residual chloride content. The precipitate was dried at $1100^{\circ}C$ ~ 24h and calcined in air at $500^{\circ}C$ ~ $1100^{\circ}C$ for one hour. Thermal decomposition behaviour of $\alpha$-stannic acid was examined by a DT-TGA and a FTIR. Chemical composition and physical properties of $SnO_{2}$ powder were observed by an AES, a BET and a TEM, respectively. With a reduction in chloride content, the relative crystallite size of $SnO_{2}$ powder slightly increased by a low-temperature-calcining. However, at a high calcining temperature(T), the reverse relation occured. It was suggested that chloride ion replaces part of lattice oxygen site of a-stannic acid. Also, chloride ion on the site was suggested to retard de-hydration as well as crystalization at a low T while to promote crystal growth of $SnO_{2}$ by forming oxygen vacancy at a high T.

  • Recently, in order to reduce a damage of chloride attack and hydration heat in marine concrete structures, blended cement in mixing the marine concrete is widely used. Long term strength development is distinct in concrete with blended cement and it also has excellent resistance to chloride attack and reduction of hydration heat. However, blended cement has a characteristic of relatively low compressive strength in early age of 28 days. On the other hand, a high level of compressive strength is required in the Standard Specification for marine concrete mix design. Such concrete mix design satisfying Standard Specification is effective to chloride attack but disadvantageous for hydration heat reduction due to large quantity of binder. In this study, the material properties of marine concrete considering water-binder ratio and binder type are experimentally investigated. Through the research results, compressive strength in blended cement at the age of 56 days is similar although it has smaller compressive strength at the age of 28 days compared with result of OPC (ordinary portland cement). Even though blended cement has a large water-binder ratio and small unit of binder content, chloride ion diffusion coefficient is still small and hydration heat is also found to be reduced. For meeting the required compressive strength in Standard Specification for marine concrete at 28 days, the increased unit content of binder is needed but the increased hydration heat is also expected.
