Optimal Timing and Duration of Cold Application for Breaking Diapause in Queens of the Bumblebee Bombus ignitus

  • Bumblebees are important pollinators of crops and wildflowers. The Korean native bumblebee, Bombus ignitus, undergoes one generation per year, and induction of artificial hibernation is essential for year-round rearing of the bumblebee. Keeping queens under cold treatment conditions for several mo is an effective method for terminating their diapause and promoting colony development. In the present study, we investigated how the timing and duration of chilling affect the artificial hibernation of B. ignitus queens. In the timing assessment, cold treatment was instituted at 12 d, 40 d, or 100 d after eclosion under a constant temperature of $5^{\circ}C$ and 80% humidity. The queens that entered cold treatment at 12 d after emergence evidenced the highest survival rates: 86.7% at two mo, 73.3% at three mo, and 46.4% at 4 mo. Survival rates were reduced under storage conditions at 12 d, 40 d, and 100 d after emergence. When queens were subjected to chilling at 8 d, 12 d, or 16 d after eclosion with constant 80% humidity, the queens stored at 12 d after eclosion exhibited the highest survival rates, which were 84.6 at one mo, 25.0% at two mo, and 7.9% at three mo. In regards to the duration of the cold period, the queens that hibernated for at least two mo evidenced optimal colony development rates. The rates of oviposition, colony foundation, and progeny-queen production of queens hibernated for two mo were 60.0%, 30.0%, and 13.3%, respectively. These values were 6.0 to 13.3 times higher than those in the queens that hibernated for 15 d. Therefore, a cold period of at least 2 mo applied 12 d after emergence were found to be the most favorable conditions for diapause break in B. ignitus queens.

Effect of Several Treatments on Chilling Injury of Paprika Fruits during Low Temperature Storage (몇 가지 처리가 파프리카 과실의 저온장해에 미치는 영향)

  • Paprika fruits should be stored and distributed at above $7^{\circ}C$ to prevent chilling injury but the small amount of paprika that transports with other horticultural products in refrigerated container by ship usually stored less than $5^{\circ}C$ for other products. In this case, paprika fruits cannot help exposing chilling temperature, so that the paprika must be lost marketable value during a long period of transfer. This study was conducted to compare the alleviated effects of high $CO_2$ treatment (passive MAP), heat (hot water dipping), and UVc treatment on chilling injury of paprika fruits due to low temperature storage, and also to decide if these treatments can be used for transporting under $5^{\circ}C$. After each treatment the paprika were put in the low temperature storage ($4^{\circ}C$) for 20 days and afterwards change the in room temperature ($20^{\circ}C$) for 5 days. The fresh weight loss of all the treatments except the high $CO_2$ treatment showed around 7~12% after 25 days of storage and the ethylene concentration showed periodical increases and decreases as around 3 ${\mu}l/l$. The $CO_2$ concentration was rapidly increased 33% carbon dioxide in high $CO_2$ treatment during room temperature storage after cold storage for 20 days. The firmness which is key quality characteristics during storage and is decreasing caused by chilling injury was not significantly different among all treatments. However, the firmness of stored paprika was maintained highest in the treated with hot water dipping. Therefore, HWD and UVc treatment that showed 60% of electrolyte leakage in the $4^{\circ}C$ control (chilling injury control) and similar level with the $7^{\circ}C$ control (non-chilling injury control) would be effective to alleviate chilling injury in the stored paprika.

Effects of Freezing Period and Chilling Process after Thawing on Physicochemical Properties and Palatability of Loin from Jeju Island Reared Crossbred Black Pigs (동결 기간 및 해동 후 냉장이 제주 흑돼지고기의 물리화학적, 기호적 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, the effects of the chilling process after thawing on pork quality were investigated by comparing the physiochemical properties and palatability of the samples just after thawing(0-TP) and the other chilled at $2^{\circ}C$ for two days after thawing (2-TP). The samples used for this study were obtained from vacuum packaged frozen loin from crossbred black pigs reared on Jeju island, and frozen at $-20^{\circ}C$ for 1 month and 12 months, and then thawing them at $4^{\circ}C$ for 20 hours. In the case of loin that was thawed after freezing for 1 month, 2-TP showed a higher water holding capacity and myofibril fragmentation index, lower hardness and chewiness, as well as better juiciness and palatability than 0-TP. However, effects of chilling after thawing were not significant in the case of loin that had been frozen for 12 months.

The Chilling Trade Effects of Provisional Anti-dumping Duties: The Case of Korea

  • Purpose - This study empirically analyzes the effects of provisional anti-dumping duties levied on imports by Korea following anti-dumping investigations. An anti-dumping duty is a legal tool that countries use to impose duties on imports to offset injurious dumping. This study verifies how effective the imposition of a provisional anti-dumping duty is and whether such duties have trade chilling effects on aggregate imports. Specifically, this study examines import trade diversion from named to unnamed countries caused by the imposition of provisional anti-dumping duties. Design/methodology - This empirical analysis employs an econometric model of provisional anti-dumping measures for cases in which Korea imposed final affirmative anti-dumping measures. We construct a monthly panel dataset for each stage of anti-dumping investigation undertaken by Korea for all manufacturing industries during 1995-2013. We illustrate a stage-by-stage analysis of anti-dumping investigations from initiation, preliminary decision, imposition of provisional duty, final affirmative decision, and imposition of final affirmative duty on a monthly basis at the six-digit harmonized system code-level. Findings - For cases in which provisional duties are imposed, the reduction in imports from named countries outweighs the increase in imports from unnamed countries. The substantial reduction in imports from named countries is large enough to offset the import diversion to unnamed countries, suggesting that import diversion in investigations is limited during the investigation period. Therefore, the use of provisional anti-dumping duties in Korea is effective, providing evidence of a chilling effect on aggregate imports. Originality/value - Few studies examine the size of the effects on import trade diversion of the imposition of provisional anti-dumping duties. We contribute to the literature by disentangling separate trade effects for each phase of the anti-dumping investigation process and imposition of provisional duty.

Dehisced Seed Germination and Seedling Growth Affected by Chilling Period in Eleutherococcus senticosus Maxim. (가시오갈피 개갑종자의 저온처리에 의한 발아 묘목의 생육특성)

  • This experiment was carried out to study the optimal chilling period for breaking the physiological dormancy of dehisced E. senticosus seeds and to investigate the critical seeding date in Kangwondo. Storage at $5^{\circ}C$ for 85 days was most effective in breaking dormancy of dehisced seeds, but didn't germinated synchronously. Only 28.1% of undehisced seeds germinated after 125 days of low temperature storage. For improving seedling survival rate in the field, 50% shading was more effective than 30% shading. Delayed seeding date resulted in decreased seedling fresh weight, dry weight, leaf area and root length, but seeding date has no significant affecte on stem length.

Effects of Postharvest Heat Treatment on Alleviation Chilling Injury and Improvement Storability of Oriental Melon (수확 후 고온처리가 참외의 저온장해 완화와 저장성 향상에 미치는 영향)

  • Oriental melons hold at $38^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours before storage increased their soluble solid, titratable acidity, vitamin C contents and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol activity. These heat treated oriental melons maintained lower production of carbon dioxide, ethylene and acetaldehyde and loss of fresh weight than untreated them, called control, during $3^{\circ}C$ MA storage. After 39 days in storage, the last day of storage, visual quality and internal quality, such as firmness, soluble solid, titratable acidity, vitamin C and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol activity, showed higher in heat treated oriental melons. Especially, Ion leakage of flesh, index of chilling injury, increased remarkably in control, so that heat treatment had to alleviate chilling injury in oriental melon. Moreover, while Alternaria rot was shown in control plot after 25 days in $3^{\circ}C$ MA storage, oriental melons treated heat were not appeared any decomposition after 39 days in $3^{\circ}C$ MA storage. As storage life of oriental melon was calculated by regression equation between visual quality and days in storage, that was longer 8 days in heat treated than control. Consequently, heat treatment that was mild, $38^{\circ}C$ and long period, 48 hours, executed before storage, sterilized surface alleviated chilling injury and lengthened storage life in oriental melons.

Effects of Feeding Citrus Byproducts on Pork Quality during Cold Storage (냉장 중 돼지고기의 품질 변화에 미치는 감귤 부산물의 급여 효과)

  • In this study, the effects of feeding citrus byproducts on various qualities of pork during cold storage were investigated, such as water holding capacity, drip loss, meat color, storage stability, rancidity, and antioxidant activity. Pork samples (195 days old, $115{\pm}3\;kg$, female) used for the experiment was divided into three groups: T0(pigs not fed citrus byproducts), T1(pigs fed 3% and 5% citrus byproducts during growth and the finishing period, respectively), and T2(pigs fed 6% and 10% citrus byproducts). The loin used for the experiment was obtained from 5 pigs of each group, vacuum packaged, and then stored at $3^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks. There was no difference among T0, T1, and T2 for pH, water holding capacity, or drip loss. As for the meat color of the loin, T1 and T2 showed higher redness($a^*$ value) during early chilling but showed higher yellowness($b^*$ value) during late chilling. T1 and T2 showed higher electron donating ability and lower volatile basic nitrogen, total plate count, and TBA values than T0, regardless of the chilling period. Thus, feeding citrus byproducts improves the storage stability of chilled pork in terms of rancidity and antioxidant activity.

Climate Change Impact on the Flowering Season of Japanese Cherry (Prunus serrulata var. spontanea) in Korea during 1941-2100 (기후변화에 따른 벚꽃 개화일의 시공간 변이)

  • A thermal time-based two-step phenological model was used to project flowering dates of Japanese cherry in South Korea from 1941 to 2100. The model consists of two sequential periods: the rest period described by chilling requirement and the forcing period described by heating requirement. Daily maximum and minimum temperature are used to calculate daily chill units until a pre-determined chilling requirement for rest release is met. After the projected rest release date, daily heat units (growing degree days) are accumulated until a pre-determined heating requirement for flowering is achieved. Model calculations using daily temperature data at 18 synoptic stations during 1955-2004 were compared with the observed blooming dates and resulted in 3.9 days mean absolute error, 5.1 days root mean squared error, and a correlation coefficient of 0.86. Considering that the phonology observation has never been fully standardized in Korea, this result seems reasonable. Gridded data sets of daily maximum and minimum temperature with a 270 m grid spacing were prepared for the climatological years 1941-1970 and 1971-2000 from observations at 56 synoptic stations by using a spatial interpolation scheme for correcting urban heat island effect as well as elevation effect. A 25km-resolution temperature data set covering the Korean Peninsula, prepared by the Meteorological Research Institute of Korea Meteorological Administration under the condition of Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change-Special Report on Emission Scenarios A2, was converted to 270 m gridded data for the climatological years 2011-2040, 2041-2070 and 2071-2100. The model was run by the gridded daily maximum and minimum temperature data sets, each representing a climatological normal year for 1941-1970, 1971-2000, 2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100. According to the model calculation, the spatially averaged flowering date for the 1971-2000 normal is shorter than that for 1941-1970 by 5.2 days. Compared with the current normal (1971-2000), flowering of Japanese cherry is expected to be earlier by 9, 21, and 29 days in the future normal years 2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2100, respectively. Southern coastal areas might experience springs with incomplete or even no Japanese cherry flowering caused by insufficient chilling for breaking bud dormancy.

Changes of the Physico-chemical Characteristics of Venison Extracts during Chilling Storage (냉장중 사슴육 증탕액의 이화학적 특성의 변화)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the changes in pH, proximate composition, pH, VBN, TBA, minerals, and fatty acid of venison extracts, from three slaughtered deers with 180~210 kg live weight (♀, Elk deer, 28~30 months of age) at 4$^{\circ}C$. Proximate composition was not affected by storage periods. The pH, VBN, and TBA ranged from 4.60~4.62, 13.52~15.75 mg%, and 0.20~0/81mg/kg. respectively. The pH, VBN, and TBA gradually increased during storage period (p<0.050. Among minerals, K, P, Na, Mg, and Ca were major mineral contents and the Ca, mg, Na contents significantly decreased (p<0.05) according to the storage period. The major fatty acid found in venison extracts were oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, linoleic acid. Oleic acid, linolenic acid, and arachidonic acid decreased during storage, but palmitic acid, heptadeanonic acid, and stearic acid increased during the storage. U/S (unsalturated fatty acid/saturated fatty acid) ratio tended to decrease during the storage.

Studies on Sanitary Conditions in a Special Grade Chicken Processing Plant in Korea I. Storage Period of Packed Chicken Meat in relation to the Bacterial Contamination of Each Processing Part (특급도계장의 위생실태에 관한 연구 I. 작업부분별 세균오염도 측정)

  • In order to investigate the storage period of packed chicken meat in relation to the bacterial contamination of each processing part, a special grade poultry processing plant located at Dongdoochun-City, Gyeonggi-Do, was surveyed mainly in point of sanitary conditions. The results are summarized as follows. 1. processing room near reception and packing room next to shipping area showed the highest bacterial counts in air. 2. Equipments and instruments for slaughtering also showed a high degree of bacterial contamination even before the operation. This finding suggested that the possibility of the bacterial contamination of carcasses through equipments and instruments would be high, if the continuous sanitary control measures are not properly taken. 3. The bacterial count of scalding water was 3${\times}$10$\^$7/ for standard plate count and 4${\times}$10$\^$5/ for most probable number of coliform bacteria at 1 hour after the start of operation. These values were maintained until the completion of processing. 4. At the ending of chilling process, the bacterial counts of chilling water were 3.3 ${\times}$10$^4$ and 3.0${\times}$10$^3$for standard plate count, when the volume of water used per bird were 21 and 51, respectively. Bacterial contamination was further decreased about 10$\^$-3/-10$\^$-4/ times as the effective chlorine concentration in chilling water was maintained about 50 ppm. 5. An average standard plate count of the residual water In abdominal cavity of carcasses was 3.9${\times}$10$^4$immediate after chilling, however, it increased to 4.7${\times}$10$\^$7/ when the carcasses were packed and stored for 10 days at 4$^{\circ}C$. off-odour development was observed as the bacterial count was not less than 10$\^$6//$m\ell$ of the residual water of the packed carcasses. Data indicated that if the standard plate count of the residual water in abdominal cavity of carcasses was not less than l0$^4$immediate after chilling, the packed chicken meat would not be stored longer than 5 days at 4$^{\circ}C$.
