This study examined the relationship between ambivalence of Korean working mothers for children and their future desire for child birth. This study examined multiple-role efficacy as a mediator in the relationship between ambivalence for their children and future desire for child birth by Korean working mothers having more than one pre-school aged child. This study examined the mediation effect of multiple-role efficacy on the relationship between ambivalence and desire for child birth by working mothers. On-line and off-line survey data from 291 Korean working mothers with more than one pre-school aged child was used for this study. Collected data were analyzed using the PASW 18.0 program and descriptive statistics analyses. Structural equation modeling and bootstrapping were conducted by AMOS 20.0 program. Results showed that ambivalence for children of working mothers having pre-school aged children had no direct influence on future child birth desire. However, their ambivalence had an indirect influence on future child birth desire through multiple-role efficacy and multiple-role efficacy by working mothers had significant effect on child birth desire. In conclusion, the working mothers' multiple-role efficacy had a mediation influence on the relationship between ambivalence for children and desire of child birth. These results were discussed for designing a policy to counter low birth.
This study examined the birth timing and the birth interval for married women, focusing on their employment status. Relying on 2005 National Survey of Marriage and Fertility, three different groups were selected: those who have no child until five years after marriage; those who gave birth for the first child within three years; those who gave birth for the second child within three years. Results show that married women who have temporary jobs tend to have longer period of having no child than housewives. In contrast, among those who have the second child within three years, married women who have temporary jobs tend to have shorter birth interval for their second child than housewives. Women in their 20s are more likely to have shorter period of time to have the first child and shorter interval for the second child than those in their 30s. Job security for married women, maternity leave for childbirth and childcare, and family-friendly environment should be strengthened to increase the fertility level by shortening the timing of having the first child and the birth interval.
The purposes of the study are to understand of rural family life cycle(FLC) and to get a FLC model for the twentieth in rural area. Data for the study were collected from 603 farm households in rural area. The major findings are as follows; 1) The age of first marriage was 21.5 years old(urban : 22.4), the first bearing 23.2(24.2), the last bearing 31.7(32.6), the first child marriage 47.2(46.5), and the last child marriage 59.7(52.7). The number of child and interval were 3.9 persons and 2.9 years respectively. From the survey results, the rural family life cycle was established. Establishment stage(from the marriage to the 1st child birth) : 21-23 yrs. Extension stage(from the 1st child birth to the last child birth) : 23-32 yrs. Complete extension stage(from the last child birth to the 1st child's marriage) : 32-47 yrs. Shrinking stage(from the 1st child's marriage to the last child's marriage) : 47-60 yrs. Complete shrinking stage(from the last child's marri ge to the death of husband) : 60-63 yrs. Dissolution stage(from the death of husband to the death of wife) : 53-75 yrs. 2) In general, the older the age, the younger the first marriage age, the greater the number of child, and the longer the interval of child bearing. The last child's marriage was too last to have the period of recovery stage. In terms of FLC by marital chorts, the later the year of marriage, the older the age of the first marriage and first baby bearing, the smaller the number of child, and the faster the launching stage. The higher the educational level, the older age of the first marriage and the first baby bering, the smaller the number of child, and the shorter the interval of child bearing. 3) Two types of rural FLC model for the twentieth were formulated. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between fertility rate and the women's employment experience in household having one child, to observe the effects of related personal factor, family factor and social factor. The sample population included 276 married women in the reproductive ages(25$\~$45 years old) which are no additional pregnant or delivery after the first child birth. The major findings of the research are as follows: First, it shows some relevance between the plan of child birth and the experience of women for employment. Specially, the married women experiencing discontinuance of employment become to have a plan and motivation about the second child birth. Second, the motivations of child birth in woman of lower fertility household are related to her age, the existence of young child, and the education. Thirdly, as a result of Logit analysis, they have the plan to deliver additionally after first child birth in case of younger age and higher educational achievement than Master degree.
The purpose of this study is to investigate various factors which affect father's child-rearing attitudes through the examination of father-child relationships. In other words, the study aims at finding out how the variables possessed by father side operate on his child-rearing attitudes according to the sex and birth-order of children. Hence, the study is carried out on the hypothesis that father's variables such as age, education, occupation, religion, etc. show different aspects on child-rearing attitudes by way of a child's sex and birth-order. The results of the study show that the factors that affect father's child-rearing attitudes are child's variables such as sex and birth-order as well as father's variables such as education, occupation and religion. describing these factors I detail, the study shows that father has higher concern on daughter rather than on son; the higher education he has, the higher his concern is; and when father has a white-collar job or is a Christian, he shows higher concern on his children. The above mentioned factors are analyzed and classified as follows by the child-rearing contents: A. The factors which affect father's concern one his children are: 1) sex, 2) father's education and 3) occupation related to the sex and birth-order of children. B. The factors which affect father's participation in child-care are; 1) sex, 2) birth-order, 3) father's education, 4) occupation and 5) religion related to the sex and birth-order. C. The factors which affect father's disciplinary attitudes (Praise or scolding) are ; 1) sex, 2) father's education and 3) religion related to the sex and birth-order. C. The factors which affect father's disciplinary attitudes (praise or scolding) are; 1) sex, 2) father's education related to sex, and 3) sex in terms of negative attitudes. E. Finally, father's age is proved to be a factor that does not give any significance in his child-rearing attitudes.
This study examined the effects of informal grandparent-provided child care and support on married women's additional birth plans. This study applied panel data analysis to three waves of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Family (KLoWF) and obtained two major findings, as follows. First, having a mother-in-law and co-residing with parents-in-law had a positive influence on married working women's additional birth plans. Child care provision from the parents of a married working woman also positively influenced her additional birth plans. Second, the analysis showed that housework assistance from a woman's mother-in-law or mother had no effect on her birth plans in both models investigated: the additional birth plan model for all women, both employed and unemployed, and the additional birth plan model for only working women. In conclusion, the findings of this study demonstrated that child care availability, with grandparents as the trusted providers, is a more important factor in married women's additional birth plans than housework assistance from their mothers-in-law and mothers.
This thesis comparatively looks into folklore faiths, expecially child-birth gods related to child-birth customs and aims to find out both nations' faith in child-birth gods and their features. It looks into birth gods protecting delivering mothers and babies by appearing at the delivery sites at time of delivery and child-rearing gods intervening in growth of babies after they are born. In both nations, many gods are believed in for selection of babies, safe delivery and their healthy growth but those appearing at delivery sites are only birth goddesses called Samsinhalmony and Obugami. What make this phenomenon appear in both nations' folklore faiths? Seeing the reason in the fact that common negative concept regarding childbirth exists in both nations' established faiths, the writer comparatively analyzed various cases of delivery-related defilement in both nations' delivery customs. Its result showed that Japan is stronger in delivery-related defilement concept than Korea is. For instance, Japan regard child birth-related defilement more horrible than that related to funeral. Pursuantly, in Japan stricter regulations on childbirth rooms and stricter taboos for babies have been passed down. Besides, in the process of its comparative study on both nations' divine images and appearances, the writer paid attention to the fact that unlike Japan's mountain gods and restroom goddesses appearing at delivery sites, they don't get involved in childbirth in Korea and discussed Japan's theory of reincarnation and its mountain goddess' marginal nature working behind the curtain. I also discussed the phenomenon that both nations' childbirth gods are passed down as Three gods, which means that their faith in childbirth gods has to be seen as a result of the faith in childbirth gods interacting with the faith in Three gods or the Three-gods theory, accordingly I indicated that it is worth re-consideration to see the Three-God Theory as the core of the faith in Samsinhalmoni. This study compared one-child households' economic structures between those who determined not to have more children and those who have a birth plan. This study examined the demographic characteristics and economic variables such as income, consumption expenditures, assets. debt, and a subjective evaluation of future economic status. Especially, it compared the effects of socioeconomic variables on expenditures on a child between low-fertility and birth-planned households. From a questionnaire completed by a husband or wife of one-child households, 154 low-fertility households and 201 birth-planned households were obtained. A t-test, chi-square test, multiple regression analysis and a dummy variable interaction technique were used. The findings of this study are as follows: First, low-fertility households were older, had higher income, and had more educated, employed wives. Their marital duration was longer, and their child was older than those of birth-planned households. Second, low-fertility households had higher consumption expenditures than did birth-planned households. Especially, expenditures of apparel and shoes, health care, education, and entertainment were significantly higher for low-fertility households. Also, low-fertility households spent more than did birth-planned households on a child. However, low-fertility households had significantly more debt than did their counterparts, and their expectation level of future economic status were lower than that of birth-planned households. Third, the effects of socioeconomic variables on expenditures on a child were different between low-fertility and birth-planned households. Age, education level, husband's occupation, wife's employment status, income, net asset, and subjective evaluation of future economic status showed significant differences. Income elasticity of expenditure on a child was significantly higher for low-fertility households than their counterparts.
The purposes of this study were to identify and compared the selection conditions of spouses and the perceptions of marriage and childbirth by sex. Moreover, this study tried to find the number of child the study subjects want to have in their marriage and what factors were important for whether they have no or one child or more than two children. The study subjects were college students who were belong to 6 health care related departments selected randomly from all health care related departments in one metropolitan area. In the selection conditions as their spouses, they ranked 'love', 'personality' and 'wealthiness' as important factors in order. Male ranked females' employment as 10th but female ranked it 5th. In conclusion, there were concordances and dis-concordances on the perceptions of marriage and child birth by sex. Understanding these factors caused by gender roles in our society could contribute to making new policies for promoting marriage rate in younger age and overcoming the problems of low birth rates by giving more specific data to policy makers for increasing child birth rate.
In that marriage immigrant women' birth rate are higher than those of Korea women, they were selected to suggest pronatalism in Korea. The purpose of this study is to explore the child birth intention of marriage immigrant women. One of qualitative study, case study was used in methodology. Participants were 10 marriage immigrant women, depth interview were conducted. The major results were categorized facilitators and inhibitors. Facilitators were 'number of origin family members', 'absence or weakness of family planning', 'successful experience of the first child birth', 'no difficulty in childbearing', 'recommendation of mother-in-law', 'child' positive effect in Korea life adjustment'. Inhibitors were 'insufficient economic condition', 'husband' old age and the opposite of mother-in-law', 'dissatisfaction with marriage life', 'lack of government' support'. Based on this results, practical implications and interventions were suggested.
