  • Changes in polyphenol, free sugar, and organic acid concentrations and their antioxidative activities in Korean pear during storage were investigated. The antioxidant activity of polyphenols was evaluated. Polyphenol concentration in different parts of pear, peel, pulp and core, reached 25.7%. pH decreased while concentrations of free sugars, including fructose, glucose, and sucrose, increased during storage. Four organic acids, citric malic, succinic, and fumaric acids, were determined. Succinic acid was the major organic acid in the pulp and decreased after 5 month of storage. The antioxidative of polyphenol fractions I, II, and III on cottonseed, linseed, and fish oils were higher than those of the control group.

  • The new alkali pulping process combined with electron beam treatment was applied to utilize hemp bast tissues as a new valuable fibrous resource. Hemp bast tissues have some chemical properties with high lignin contents and holocellulose not to be defiberized by alkali pulping only, compared with the bast tissue of paper mulberry. To make up for the weakness of traditional alkali pulping process, electron beams were directly irradiated into the swelled bast tissue of hemp in NaOH solution and distilled water, and then facilitated the defiberization of hemp bast tissues. The papermaking from hemp bast fibers manufactured by the combination pulping process showed good apparent density, formation structure and air permeability, and had some mechanical properties with lower tensile, tear, burst strength and folding endurance. It is finally concluded that the combination pulping process with electron beam treatment could be suggested a new alternative for non-woody fibers.

  • The enrichment with nutrients in rivers and lakes becomes serious problems in Korea. As the environmental friendly solution, the phytoremediation are getting more attention and the water hyacinth could be a strong candidate plant for this. Water hyacinth is a free floating freshwater plant proven to be a effective plant used for a purification of a polluted lakes, sewage wastewater, and livestock wastewater. The biggest obstacles for application of water hyacinth in Korea could be the disposal of the water hyacinth before winter, because there is no feasible use for the water hyacinth until now. In this study, the characteristics of water hyacinth were deeply investigated for providing background data to develop appropriate application of the water hyacinth. The water hyacinth was fractioned three parts, leaf, air blader, root of which morphological properties were evaluated with microscope and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The water contents of each parts of the water hyacinth were 87% for leaf, 96.5% for air bladder, 94.6% for root. The chemical compositions of each parts were also measured and showed around 29% of hot water extract in leaf and air bladder, 42% holocellulose for leaf, 47% holocellulose for air bladder. The application of water hyacinth biomass without root parts to papermaking provided bulkier structure, but the tensile strength was decreased.

  • Environmental friendly leaching process for the recovery of cobalt and lithium from the $LiCoO_2$ was investigated by organic acids as a leaching reagent. The experimental parameters, such as organic acid type, concentrations of leachant and hydrogen peroxide, reaction time and temperature as well as the pulp density were tested to obtain the most effective conditions for the leaching of cobalt and lithium. The results showed that the latic acid was the most effective leaching reagent for cobalt and lithium among the organic acids and was reached about 99.9% of leaching percentage respectively. With the increase of the concentration of citric acid, hydrogen peroxide and temperature, the leaching rate of cobalt and lithium increased. But the increase of pulp density decreased the leaching rate of cobalt and lithium.

  • Nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by a simple liquid phase process for producing ceramics powder using a precursor impregnated with a nickel(II) nitrate hexahydrate aqueous solution in an industrial pulp. The microfibrile structure of the precursor impregnated with nickel nitrate hexahydrate aqueous solution was confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the crystal structure and particle size of nickel oxide (NiO) particles produced as the heat treatment temperature of the precursor were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and SEM. As a result, it was confirmed through XRD and SEM analysis that the temperature at which the organic material of the precursor is completely thermally decomposed was 495-500℃, and the size and crystallinity of the nickel oxide particles produced increased as the heat treatment temperature increased. The size of the nickel oxide particles obtained by heat treatment at 500-800℃ for 1 hour was 50-200 nm. It was confirmed by XRD and SEM analysis that a NiO crystal phase was formed at a heat treatment temperature of 380℃, only a single NiO phase existed until 800℃.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the stability of archival documents produced using papers. The properties of archival documents depend on the type of fillers of papers that are used such as fiber, non cellulose fiber, and mineral. The physio-chemical characteristics of archival documents were analyzed by employing acid hydrolysis against cellulose fiber substances. Fibers of Korean hand-made (Hanji), flex, and cotten papers showed higher pH and the degree of polymerization (DP) than wood fiber and mechanical fiber. Mechanical pulp containing 12.8% of lignin showed the greatest decrease of DP due to acid hydrolysis, and this resulted in increase of degree of aging. The filler found to clay and talc did not contain metal such as $Fe^{+2}$, $Fe^{+3}$, and $Cu^{+2}$. The alkaline metals such as Mg, Ca, and Ti showed greater resistance to acid hydrolysis.

  • Pre-pulping extracts were found to contain a dilute amount of xylo-oligosaccharides and acetic acid as the major components, and many minor components including other organic acids, lignin-derived phenolics, and sugar degradation products. Once separated from the pulp, a secondary hydrolysis step was required to hydrolyze oligomeric hemicellulose sugars into monomeric sugars before fermentation. The following study detailed the extent of hemicellulose recovery by pre-pulping using hot water extraction and characterized the hydrolysis of the extract with respect to comparing acid and enzymatic hydrolysis. The secondaryhydrolysis of hot water extracts made at an H-Factor of 800 was tested for a variety of acid and enzyme loading levels using the sulfuric acid and xylanases. The maximum fermentable sugar yield from acid and enzyme hydrolysis of the extract was 18.7 g/${\ell}$ and 17.7 g/${\ell}$ representing 84.6% and 80.1% of the maximum possible yield, respectively.

  • The samples used for this work were low grade c1ay($Fe_2O_3$ : 2.90%, $TiO_2$ : 1.65%) produced from Youngsan-po district, and for the iron-bearing impurities removal having a bad influence on Kaoline sample was carried out column floatatoin using Oleic acid, Potassium oleat, Aero 840 promotor, Aero 870 promotor and Keroseneas collectors. For removal of the iron-vearing impurities from the kaoline, investigated first chemical composition size distribution of Kaoline sample, also performanced a basic study on pulp density, collector and pH change on a sort of frother. The flotation separation of impurities from kaoline can be achieved by using both oleic acid and Aero 840 promotor as collectors within narrow acid limits(pH 2-3). Pine oil was more effective frother than MIBC with olelic acid as aa collector.

  • For studying out the method of the effective purification of waste waters such as dying, paper pulp and plating wastewater, we measured the COD removal efficiency, color and turbidity of those pollutants by the physical and chemical method using the Inorganic Coagulating Agent (CM, RM) and a High Voltage Generator. The COD removal efficiency measured when applying the Inorganic Coagulating Agent (CM, RM) was mush higher than that using the Existing Coagulating Agent In addition to, when using those two methods above mentioned at the same time, both the COD removal efficiency and the reduction-effect of the inserting quantities of Coagulating Agent were higher than those were used singly. The system using both an Inorganic Coagulating Agent and a High Voltage Generator will be useful in various fields of wastewater treatment.
