Although the generic implementation of aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) processes for the recovery of biological products has been exploited for several years, this has not resulted in a wide adoption of the technique. The main reasons involve the poor understanding of the mechanism governing phase formation and the behavior of solute partitioning in ATPS processes, the cost of phase forming polymers, and the necessary extended time to optimize the technique. In this review paper, some of the practical disadvantages attributed to ATPS are addressed. The practical approach exploited to design ATPS processes, the application to achieve process integration, the extended use for the recovery of high-value products, and the recent development of new low-cost ATPS, are discussed. It is proposed that the trend of the practical application of ATPS processes for the recovery of biological products will involve the purification of new high-value bioparticulate products with medical applications. Such a trend will give new impetus to the technique, and will draw attention from industries needing to develop new, and improve existing, commercial processes.
In case of considering the shear effect, the complete solutions are obtained for dynamic plastic response of a rigid, perfectly plastic hinged-free beam, of which one end is hinged and the other end free, subjected to a transverse strike by a travelling rigid mass at an arbitrary location along its span. Special attention is paid to new deformation mechanisms due to shear sliding on both sides of the rigid mass and the plastic energy dissipation. The dimensionless numerical results demonstrate that three parameters, i.e., mass ratio, impact position of mass, as well as the non-dimensional fully plastic shear force, have significant influence on the partitioning of dissipated energy and failure mode of the hingedfree beam. The shear effect can never be negligible when the mass ratio is comparatively small and the impact location of mass is close to the hinged end.

The use of colloidal gas aphron (CGA), as an external oxygen carrier, provides a promising alternative to promote aerobic bioremediation of BTEX in the subsurface environment. CGA is a stable bubble supported by three surfactant layers and can supply oxygen below the soil surface uniformly due to its plug-flow characteristic. Since CGA has a hydrophobic layer that can act as a partitioning medium for hydrophobic contaminants it is known to facilitate desorption of soil-sorbed contaminants. In addition, bioaugmentation and biostimulation are possibly achieved by using CGA when generated from a solution containing BTEX-degrading microorganisms and appropriate nutrients. In this study, we presented the physico-chemical characteristics of CGA generated from a solution composed of microorganisms and nutrients. The applicability of CGA as an in situ aerobic bioremediation technology of BTEX will be further evaluated.
Atom probe tomography is a time-of-flight mass spectrometry-based microanalysis technique based on the field evaporation of surface atoms of a tip-shaped specimen under an extremely high surface electric field. It enables three-dimensional characterization for deeper understanding of chemical nature in conductive materials at nanometer/atomic level, because of its high depth and spatial resolutions and ppm-level sensitivity. Indeed, the technique has been widely used to investigate the elemental partitioning in the complex microstructures, the segregation of solute atoms to the boundaries, interfaces, and dislocations as well as following of the evolution of precipitation staring from the early stage of cluster formation to the final stage of the equilibrium precipitates. The current review article aims at giving a comment to first atom probe users regarding the limitation of the techniques, providing a brief perspective on how we correctly interprets atom probe data for targeted applications.
Sixteen organochlorine pesticides extracted out from the crops and cleaned by solvent-solvent partitioning and Florisil column chromatography were determined by gas-liquid chromatography. The majority of the pesticides were well separated by being eluted through 5% QF-1 column and some of them through 3% OV-17 column and 2.596 DC-200/2.5% QF-1 column, and the eluted pesticides were detected by $^{63}Ni$ electron capture detector. The linear calibration curves were obtained for the most of pesticides while some curves were slightly deviated from the linearity. In the determination of 16 pesticides added to thirteen kinds of crops, the recoveries were showed over 85% for the most cases and the relative standard deviations of 5 analyses were less than 12.1%. The results were within the criteria of the AOAC method.
This article describes the topical delivery and localization of budesonide through the hairless mouse skin. Two poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PCL-PEO) triblock copolymers (T 222 and T 252) having different CL:EO ratios were added in the preparation of budesonide particles stabilized with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and Tween 80 under ultrasonication. For comparison, a commercial PEO-PPO-PEO triblock copolymer (F68) was studied under the same condition. To demonstrate the effects of the triblock copolymer, the particle size of budesonide emulsion, entrapment efficiency, and in vitro release were measured and compared. The budesonide particles stabilized by the triblock copolymers had a diameter of ca. 350 nm with entrapment efficiencies of 66-76%. The In vitro release profiles of all samples showed an initial burst followed by sustained release. The skin penetration and permeation of budesonide were analyzed by using a Frantz diffusion cell. T 222 and T 252 exhibited higher total permeation amounts, but lower budesonide penetration amounts, than F68. The results suggest that the partitioning of budesonide in each skin layer can be adjusted in order to avoid skin thinning and negative immune response arising from the penetration of budesonide in blood vessels.
A Pseudomonas strain SG3 producing biosurfactant and showing antifungal and insecticidal activities was isolated from agricultural soil severely contaminated with machine oils. The antagonistic bacterium inhibited mycelial growth of all of the tested fungal pathogens. The fermentation broth of SG3 also effectively suppressed the development of various plant diseases including rice blast, tomato gray mold, tomato late blight, wheat leaf rust, barley powdery mildew and red pepper anthracnose. An antifungal substance was isolated from the fermentation broth of SG3 by ethyl acetate partitioning, silica gel column chromatography and preparative HPLC under the guide of bioassay. The chemical structure of the antifungal substance was determined to be rhamnolipid B by mass and NMR spectral analyses. The antifungal biosurfactant showed a potent in vivo antifungal activity against gray mold and late blight on tomato plants. In addition, rhamnolipid B inhibited mycelial growth of B. cinerea causing tomato gray mold and zoospore germination and mycelial growth of P. infestans causing tomato late blight. Pseudomonas sp. SG3 producing rhamnolipid B could be used as a new biocontrol agent for the control of plant diseases occurring on tomato plants.
Phenanthrene uptake by surfactant sorbed on activated carbon was investigated to recycle of surfactant in washed solution for contaminated soil. The partitioning of phenanthrene to the activated carbon coating with Triton X-100 as a surfactant was also evaluated by a mathematical model. Phenanthrene-contaminated soil (200 mg/kg) was washed in 10 g/L of surfactant solution. Washed phenanthrene in solution was separated by various particle loadings of granular activated carbon through a mode of selective adsorption. Removal of phenanthrene was 99.3%, and surfactant recovery was 88.9% by 2.5 g/L of granular activated carbon, respectively. Phenanthrene uptake by activated carbon was greater than that of phenanthrene calculated by a standard model for a system with one partitioning component. This is accounted for enhanced surface solubilization by hemi-micelles adsorbed onto granular activated carbon. The effectiveness factor is greater than 1 and molar ratio of solubilization to sorbed surfactant is higher than that of liquid surfactant. Results suggest that separation of contaminants and surfactants by activated carbon through washing process in soil is much effective than that of calculated in a theoretical model.

The extraction characteristics of heavy metals(HM) from a contaminated soil at existing lead smelters were investigated with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid(EDTA), citrate and HCl as washing solutions. EDTA was more effective for Pb than for other heavy metals. As the mol ratio of EDTA/HM increased, the removal efficiency of heavy metals became higher. When the mol ratio of EDTA/HM approached to 6.5, it removed Pb most effectively. Citrate was effective especially in extracting Zn. The removal efficiency of HCl was comparatively high in almost all heavy metals, and at 0.3N concentration it was the highest. After soil washing process by the use of EDTA, the great part of exchangeable fractions and most of heavy metals of weakly adsorbed like carbonate fraction were extracted. For washing with citrate and HCl, four heavy metals showed the similar exchange of chemical partitioning and the exchangeable fractions of Pb which has weakly adsorbed to soil were more increased than before the process. As removal efficiency of citrate washing process depends upon the distribution of non-detrital fractions, so it can be contended that only the amount of non-detrital fractions could be removed from all the heavy metal content. EDTA and HCl could remove most of non-residual fractions in all heavy metals except Zn. As a result of EDTA washing, toxicity characteristic leaching procedure(TCLP) concentration of the processed soil met the USEPA Pb limit of 5.0 mg/L.

The characteristics of hydrospheric concentration and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the Lake of Sihwa were investigated on this study. Sediment and Surface water samples were collected from upstream and downstream in Lake of Sihwa. The total PAHs concentrations of surface water were $21.9{\sim}49.6\;ng/L$ at upstream and $19.4{\sim}99.7\;ng/L$ at downstream, respectively. Most of the PAHs existed in the dissolved phase with average 87%. In the case of sediment samples, total PAHs concentrations were $51.7{\sim}325\;ng/g-dry$ at upstream and $13.4{\sim}72.3\;ng/g-dry$ at downstream, respectively. Low-and-middle molecular weight of PAHs were dominated in dissolved phase of the surface water, while middle-and-high molecular weight compounds were predominantly present in the particular phase of the surface water and sediment. The average slope obtained from the plots of log-log scaled dissolved/solid partition coefficient vs. octanol/water partition coefficient was $0.73{\pm}0.12$ and the slope from the water/sediment partition coefficient was $0.59{\pm}0.10$. These results indicated that distribution of PAHs between the dissolved phase and the solid phase was not at equilibrium as well as between water and sediment.
