  • Operational testing of the THIOPAQ® facility that removes H2S from landfill gas was performed for 746 days. The average H2S removal efficiency was 99.4%, and the input quantities of air, NaOH, and nutrients per sulfur load were 13.1 ㎥/ton, 1.5 ㎥/ton, and 28.7 L/ton, respectively. The purity of the bio-sulfur produced from the facility was 94.8%, with 3.3% impurities, except for moisture. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the compositional contents of amino acids and free amino acids of the bio-sulfur surface were 5,308 and 728 mg/kg, respectively. The mean particle size was 3.41 ㎛, which was much smaller than that of chemical sulfur. Based on these results, a high H2S removal rate of more than 97% is feasible, and high value-added bio-sulfur, which is used as a fungicide because of its hydrophilic characteristics and small size, can be obtained at this facility.

  • There have been a lot of studies in the past for the method of predicting the failure of a machine, and recently, a lot of researches and applications have been generated to diagnose the physical condition of the machine and the parts and to calculate the remaining life through various methods. Survival models are also used to predict plant failures based on past anomaly cycles. In particular, special machine that reflect the fluid flow and process characteristics of chemical plants are connected to hundreds or thousands of sensors, so there are not many factors that need to be considered, such as process and material data as well as application of derivative variables. In this paper, the data were preprocessed through time series anomaly detection based on unsupervised learning to predict the abnormalities of these special machine. Next, clustering results reflecting clustering-based data characteristics were applied to produce additional variables, and a learning data set was created based on the history of past facility abnormalities. Finally, the prediction methodology based on the supervised learning algorithm was applied, and the model update was confirmed to improve the accuracy of the prediction of facility failure. Through this, it is expected to improve the efficiency of facility operation by flexibly replacing the maintenance time and parts supply and demand by predicting abnormalities of machine and extracting key factors.

  • This research was undertaken to manage the waste treatment facility in cosmetic plants more effectively, The discharge and the treatment of pollutant in cosmetic plants were analyzed. And several factors which had an influential effect of the treatment cost, were found out. Effective management methods are proposed. Since average operating rate is estimated from 29% to 56%, the facility has an 44% to 71% surplus capacity. The pollutant removal rate influences highly on the treatment cost. The amount of MLSS is the factor that effects the removal rate. Chemical cost and the amount of the sludge are the influencing factors. To reduce the waste water treatment cost,-the saving of SV3O use and the management of MLSS amount are essential.

  • The Chemical Controls Act strictly regulates for the chemical companies to establish sufficient space between the liquid chemical tank and dike, but facilities already installed suffer from the space shortage between the tank and dike. Installing leakage preventing plates on the dike is considered as one of the economic solutions that can alleviate the space deficiency. However, there is no technical and reasonable criterion for the safety evaluation of the leakage preventing plate on the dike. In order to address this problem, we provide generalized and verified calculating equations that give maximum height and horizontal distance of leakage trajectories. Through the proposed equations, proper heights of the leakage preventing plates on the dike can be easily determined. In this study, new calculating methods are also developed to determine the impact force of the liquid to the leakage preventing plates. In addition, we performed the reactivity experiments between four corrosive liquid chemicals and two stainless steel materials that are candidate substances for the construction of the leakage preventing plate. The results of this study is expected to be applicable as a guideline in the design of safe dike and its leakage preventing plates.

  • Two multichannel analysis of surface wave (MASW) surveys were conducted over a soil site in Tacoma Water's Green River Facility, Washington, where construction of a chemical treatment facility had been planned. The purpose of the surveys was to compare soil stiffness characterized by shear-velocity (Vs) distribution before and after Deep Dynamic Compaction (DDC) operation that was designed to improve the soil stiffness. Site soil consisted of very heterogeneous gravel and cobbles in a sand-and-silt matrix. Results from each survey are represented by two 2-D Vs maps delineating Vs variation of soil below the surveyed lines. One map was constructed from those dispersion curves that were analyzed with a significant amount of subjective judgment involved, whereas the other map was constructed from those dispersion curves analyzed with as much objective information as possible. Comparison of 2-D Vs maps indicates that Vs actually decreased after the DDC operations, possibly due to the loss (or reduction) of cohesive bonding between soil particles caused by the compaction operations.

  • Mixed acid is very reactive and highly corrosive. it has been causing many accidents in a electronic industry, a steel industry, and a chemical industry. Therefore, it is required that the high safety level for the acid storage facilities. In this study, we investigated the accident causes for resent leak accidents with Root Cause Analysis (RCA). The root causes analysed by RCA were categorized as nine divisions by the their characteristics. Furthermore, each nine divisions causes was applied to the PDCA model which are using at OHSAS 18001. It is suggested that the nine division with the root causes can be the essential items for the development of the safety management manual. It is helpful to the safety improvement of the acid storage facility.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate changes among the nine kinds of reduction chemical substances in Korea over the period of 2008-2017. We will define basic data for improving the management methods for reducing chemical substances. Methods: A survey of hazardous pollutant emissions for 2008-2017 was conducted through the pollutant Release and Transfer Register homepage. Nine kinds of designated reduction chemical substances (Benzene, Vinyl chloride, Trichloro ethylene, 1,3-butadiene, Dichloro methane, Tetrachloro ethylene, N,N-dimethylformamide, Acrylo nitrile, and Chloroform) provided the study subjects. The emission of hazardous chemicals and health effects used the National Health Statistics and Integrated Chemicals Information System (ICIS) as a reference. Results: Hazardous pollutant emissions increased by 1.2 times over the past decade, and nine types of reduction chemical substances increased by 1.6 times. By region, the emissions of reduction chemical substances over the last 10 years were in the order of Chungbuk, Gyeonggi, and Gyeongbuk. Emissions of Dichloro methane was the highest in Chungbuk and Gyeongbuk. N,N-dimethylformamide was the highest in Gyeonggi. Carcinogen pollutant emissions showed a tendency to increase continuously. In addition, group 1 carcinogen emissions showed a tendency to decrease. Conclusion: In the last decade, the amount of hazardous chemical emissions has been continuously increasing. Hazardous chemical emissions require facility improvement for continuous emissions reduction. More research on reduction of emissions is needed.

  • In this study, evaluation of physical and chemical properties of crushed sand was performed to establish optimal mix proportion standard for concrete using crushed sand afterward. Most of properties of crushed sand were satisfied with KS F 2527. Especially, chemical stabilities such as alkali-aggregate reaction were fairly good. However, considerable attention would be required in using crushed sand from lime stone judging from the result that weight loss of it was more than 23.8%. There were some differences in the properties with production region, stone type and capacity of facility, therefore it is thought that quality should be controled by optimal regulations for corresponding items.

  • The Propulsion Test Facilities for the development of Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II are being built, some test facilities are completed and various combustion tests are running. The Propulsion Test Facilities consists test-stand, which carries out tests for engine development model, and various sub-systems and vessels containing LOX and Jet A-1 as propellant. There are always risks of fire and explosion at the test-stand since engine development model is conducted at test-stand with real combustion test with very high pressure, mixed propellant and high energy. In this paper, in order to establish the consequence analysis and risk reduction measures in the Propulsion Test Facilities, followings are considered. 1) a propellant leak accident scenario is assumed in test-stand. 2) TNT equivalent model equation based on blast wave of the explosion was used to analyze blast overpressure and impacts. Also, technical, systematic and managemental measure is described to ensure risk reduction for propulsion test facility.
