  • Organic materials have been considered for the fabrication of practical electroluminescent(EL) devices because a large number of organic materials are known to have extremely high fluorescence quantum efficiencies in the visible spectrum. In this study, electroluminescent devices are constructed using novel organic materials PRL-401, PRL-403 as the emitting elements. The devices have a triple-layer structure of organic thin films, prepared by vacuum vapor deposition. Greenish yellow electroluminescent emission is observed. The maximum luminances are over 1000 $cd/m^2$ and the turn-on voltages are about 13 V.

  • The distribution rate of 4f and 5f series elements in chelate and ion association extraction system was studied. Clear difference between lighter and heavier part of 4f series are observed. Trivalent Am and Cm were appeared to be grouped into the lighter part of 4f series. And also the variation of distribution ratio according to the varied temperature was studied. The variation modes of distribution ratio are different according to the extraction system. Atomic number dependence in the chelate extraction system was observed.

  • Pitch synthesis reaction was studied based on the effect for chemical composition of feedstock. Feedstock was selected as pyrolyzed fuel oil (PFO) and coal-tar (CT), which are by-products in petroleum and steel industry. Pitch was prepared at $420^{\circ}C$ for 180 minutes on atmospheric pressure by thermal treatment. Thermal stability and softening point (SP) of the prepared pitches were investigated and their molecular weight distribution was analyzed by MALDI-TOF. PFO has various aliphatic compounds and coal-tar has high aromaticity with 3 wt% of primary quinoline insolubles. The thermal property of PFO was enhanced with polymerization reaction during the thermal treatment with increased molecular weight range. But CT was inferior to PFO because of side reaction by hetero elements. CTP was appeared molecular weight by 0~200 m/z.

  • Due to the limitations of the channel length, the lateral spread for two-dimensional impurity distributions is critical for the analysis of devices including the integrated complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) circuits and high frequency semiconductor devices. The developed codes were then compared with the two-dimensional implanted profiles measured by transmission electron microscope (TEM) as well as simulated by a commercial TSUPREM4 for verification purposes. The measured two-dimensional TEM data obtained by chemical etching-method was consistent with the results of the developed analytical model, and it seemed to be more accurate than the results attained by a commercial TSUPREM4. The developed codes can be applied on a wider energy range $(1KeV{\sim}30MeV)$ than a commercial TSUPREM4 of which the maximum energy range cannot exceed 1MeV for the limited doping elements. Moreover, it is not only limited to diffusion process but also can be applied to implantation due to the sloped and nano scale structure of the mask.

  • Nano-structured ceramics, which consist of structural elements with nanometer-size crystallites, are expected to show various unusual properties. We developed the novel nano-structured ceramics which consists of $Si_3N_4$ and TiN and a self-lubricant material. The ceramics was fabricated by powder metallurgy process using mechano-chemical grinding process and short-time sintering process. Each grain size of matrix and the self-lubricant particle was under about 50 nm and a few namometer. It showed high wear resistance and low friction coefficient by controlling of microstructure.

  • The ionic liquids are known to potential alternative solvents capable of replacing the commercial solvents in various processes including those in nuclear fuel cycle. As to the material, a number of studies have already reviewed the interesting results and addressed the spectroscopic as well as electrochemical behaviors of metal elements included in spent nuclear fuels. It has found that the important properties of metal ions in TBP dissolved ILs have led the development of alternative technologies to traditional solvent extraction processes. On the other hand, the electrochemical deposition of metal ions in ILs have been investigated for the application of the solvents to aqueous as well as to non-aqueous processes. In this work, a review on the application of ILs in nuclear fuel cycle is briefly presented to understand the notable researches on ILs focusing on aqueous processes.

  • Generally, aging of paper is evaluated by folding endurance and degree of yellowing. It was known as that lignin, hemicellulose and metallic ion affect yellowing of mechanical or chemical pulps. Among these elements, especially, the study of hemicellulose that affect at yellowing of pulp is insufficient. In this study, we examined into the influence that glucuronoxylan or glucomannan and metallic ion($Cu^{2+},\;Fe^{2+},\;Fe^{3+},Mn^{2+}$) residued in pulp get each or when mixed at yellowing. Filter paper was treated with each metallic ion, glucuronoxylan and the mixture of glucuronoxylan and metal ions, and brightness and CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ was measured after accelerated aging. As the results of measurements, the filter paper processed by 10% glucuronoxylan was dropped 2-3% on the brightness after accelerated aging for 24 hours. Also, the filter paper treated with glucuronoxylan and $Fe^{2+}$ was dropped 7% on the brightness.

  • By use of cluster orbitals, analytic solutions of finite face-centered cubic clusters are obtained. Taking interactions between up to the second nearest neighbors into account, the forms of all the elements of the Hamiltonian matrix are found explicitly within Huckel approximation. By adopting $D_{2k}$ point group to the cluster, the matrix is simplified. We assume that the cluster orbitals can mix together only when their state indices are indentical. It is then possible to calculate various physical properties of face-centered cubic metal clusters and example are shown for palladium clusters. The results show that density of states and projected density of states are similar, qualitatively, with those obtained by extended Huckel calculation.

  • Rare earth elements (REE) were individual separated by applying the gradient elution via HPLC using ${\alpha}-hydroxyisobutyric$ acid (HIBA) as an eluent. However, the overlap of Y and Dy peaks was too severe to obtain the resolution of these two peaks. The target transformation factor analysis (TTFA) was applied to resolve the elution peaks of Y and Dy. [A]$_{raw}$ formed from the absorbances of mixed solution was factor analyzed. The abstract factor analysis(AFA) was used to determine the number of components that contributed to the poorly resolved peaks. The error theory in the AFA showed that the number of components was 2. The test vectors which correspond to pure component were selected from the standard solutions of Y and Dy. TTFA was accomplished by target testing. The results showed that the resolution of two peaks as well as the determination of Y and Dy were possible by the factor analysis.

  • The process of transcription is the major point at which gene expression is regulated. The jun and fos families of eukaryotic transcription factor heterodimerize to form complexes capable of binding 5'-TGAGTCA-3'DNA elements (AP-1 binding site). To search for the inhibitors of the jun-fos-DNA complex formation, several natural products extracts were screened and methanol extract of tanshen (the dried roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge) showed remarkable inhibitory activity. The active compounds of the extracts were purified using re-peated column chromatography and recrystallization. Their structures were identified as tanshinone I and tanshinone IIA. Through the electrophoresis mobility shift assay and cell cytotoxicity test, tanshinone I and tanshinone IIA were identified as inhibitors that suppress not only AP-1 function but also the cell proliferation. Tanshinone I also suppressed the jun-fos-DNA complex formation in TPA-induced NIH 3T3 cells.
