Rapid industrialization and a significant population growth has led to an increased use of chemicals, which has limited the biological processes that account for most of the existing water and wastewater treatment methods. Ozone microbubble technology, which is one of advanced oxidation processes, has recently attracted attention as a method to solve these issues. In this paper, we reviewed both the physical and the chemical characteristics of microbubbles, and evaluated microbubble-based ozone oxidation processes focusing on the removal of various toxic contaminants. In addition, we discussed the potential of an ozone microbubble process as water and wastewater treatment processes by combining it with other treatment technologies.
We investigated the antagonism of indigenous bacteria isolated from stressed mussels and their extracellular metabolites on the adult zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha. Selective bacterial isolates including Aeromonas media, A. salmonicida, A. veronii, and Shewanella putrefaciens, showed strong lethality against adult mussels and 100% mortality was observed within 5 days of incubation. Bacterial metabolites, fractionated and concentrated from stationary-phase culture supernatants of these bacterial isolates, displayed varying degrees of antagonistic effects on zebra mussels. Among the three size fractions examined, <5, 5-10, and >10 kDa, the mast lethal fraction seems to be >10 kDa for three of the four isolates tested. Further chemical analyses of these size fractions revealed that the predominant constituents were polysaccharides and proteins. No 2-keto-3-deoxyoctanoic acid (2-KDO), deoxyribonucleic acids (DNA) or uranic acid were detectable. Extraction of supernatants of two antagonistic isolates with polar solvent suggested that polar molecules are present in the active fraction. Our data suggest that extracellular metabolites produced by antagonistic bacteria are also involved in disease development in zebra mussels and elucidation of the mechanisms involved may offer a novel strategy for control of biofouling invertebrates.

The oriental stork (Ciconia boyciana) is listed as an endangered species internationally. Its resident population has been extirpated in South Korea since 1971. Its predicted historical habitat included forests (54%), rice paddy fields (28%), grasslands (17%), river-streams (less than 1%), and villages (less than 1%) based on pre-extirpation records in a previous study. However, habitat attributes of recently reintroduced oriental storks since 2015 remain unknown. To examine habitat use patterns and home ranges of recently reintroduced oriental storks, 2015-2017 tracking data of 17 individuals were used to analyze their spatial attributes with a Kernel Density Estimate method and breeding status. Their habitat use patterns from peripheral to core areas were highly associated with increasing rice paddy fields (26%) and decreasing forested areas (55%). Scale-dependent home ranges were 51% smaller for breeders than for non-breeders on average. Our study results highlight that the habitat use pattern of reintroduced oriental storks seems to be comparable to the historical pattern where the used area is likely to be more centralized for breeders than for non-breeders in South Korea. Furthermore, the direction of habitat management for oriental storks should focus on biodiversity improvement of rice paddy fields with chemical free cultivation and irrigation.
This study examined the different polyphenism of larval salamander Hynobius ieechii according to two habitats, pond and stream. We collected salamander's eggs from three regions including Mountain Inwang, Surak and Gwangju. Eggs were treated by four different conditions according to predation level and habitat: high risk - which had a predation risk three times a day; low risk - which had no predation risk, pond and stream habitat. Predation risk was conducted by using chemical cue from Chinese minnows. The chemical cue treatment started from the day of collection and ended one week after the hatching. After the treatment phase, we measured the head width at the level of the eyes(HWE) and the largest head width(LHW) and snout-vent length of the each larva. We calculated the ratio of the head size by dividing HWE by LHW and made a comparison with each of the average ratio of head size according to the predation risk. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the ratio of the head size and snout-vent length according to the predation risk and habitat. From these results we found that predation risk and habitat condition can cause the different polyphenism to the larval salamander and these morphological changes could be affect their mortality.
Parts of damaged trees are being transplanted in accordance with the Environmental Impact Assessment Manual. Problems such as death or poor growth are constantly being addressed in the process of transplanting trees from the forest they originally inhabited to temporary and final transplant sites. The purpose of this study is to analyze the differences in soil properties in the surrounding forest, the temporary transplant site, and the construction site and to suggest methods for improving the soil to make it suitable for the growth of transplanted trees. For 10 development projects, 2 soil samples were sampled from the surrounding forest, temporary transplant site, and construction site. A total of 60 soil samples were analyzed for physical and chemical properties. Among the physical properties such as coefficient of permeability, available moisture, and hardness, and chemical properties such as acidity, organic matter content, total nitrogen, and available P showed significant differences among groups. The soil of the construction site is harder than the surrounding forest because of construction equipments, the coefficient of permeability is higherthan the surrounding forest because of high sand content, and the available moisture was low. It does not retain the moisture necessary for plants in the soil and drains immediately. It is necessary to implement tillage to improve the physical properties and structure of the soil. In addition, it is necessary to cover the surface with wood chips or fallen leaves after adding mature organic matter to improve the physical and chemical properties of the soil together.
Archaea substantially contribute to global geochemical cycling and energy cycling and are impacted by land-use change. However, the response of archaeal communities to a change from upland field to paddy field has been poorly characterized. Here, soil samples were collected at two depths (0-20 cm and 20-40 cm) from one upland field and six paddy fields that were established on former upland fields at different times (1, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 years before the study). Barcoded pyrosequencing was employed to assess the archaeal communities from the samples at taxonomic resolutions from phylum to genus levels. The total archaeal operational taxonomic unit (OTU) richness showed a significant positive correlation with the land-use change duration. Two phyla, Euryarchaeota and Crenarchaeota, were recorded throughout the study. Both the relative abundance and OTU richness of Euryarchaeota increased at both depths but increased more steadily at the subsurface rather than at the surface. However, these data of Crenarchaeota were the opposite. Additionally, the archaeal composition exhibited a significant relationship with C/N ratios, total phosphorus, soil pH, Olsen phosphorus, and the land-use change duration at several taxonomic resolutions. Our results emphasize that after a change from upland fields to paddy fields, the archaeal diversity and composition changed, and the duration is an important factor in addition to the soil chemical properties.
Objectives: Industrial development in Korea results in a rapid increase in the number of chemicals, some of which may be responsible for toxicity to aquatic ecosystems. In addition, the types of hazardous chemicals included in industrial effluents have gradually increased. Therefore, chemical analysis alone is not enough to assess ecological effects of toxic chemicals in wastewater. Methods: In response to new regulations as whole effluent toxicity (WET) tests for effluent discharge of 15 publicly owned treatment works (POTWs) and 25 industrial effluent treatment plants in Gyeonggi-do, which will be effective from 2011, a necessity of studies emerges that investigates toxicity levels. Results: In case of the public treatment plants, none of them had exceeded the criteria for ecotoxicity. As for individual wastewater discharge facilities, on the other hand, two types were found to exceed the criteria: pulp and paper manufacturing facilities and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. For the pulp and paper manufacturing facilities, monitoring results could not help determine the exact toxicant identification. However, Daphnia magna inhibition effect or death was found to leave white plums, suggesting that suspended solids treated and the polymer used in coagulant dose. In case of pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, the general water quality parameters cannot affect Daphia magna. However, conductivity and salinity can have an effect to be 14,000 ${\mu}s/cm$, 8.1‰ by salts, respectively. Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) and Toxicity Reduction Evaluation (TRE) procedures results appeared to be effective for identifying toxic compounds in $Cl^{-}$ and $SO_4^{2-}$. Conclusions: It is necessary to develop control measures for water treatment chemicals and salts used for processes such as coagulation in individual wastewater discharge facilities in order to achieve the goal to protect aquatic ecosystems in public waters.

We investigated the responses of red squirrels to pine nuts (Pinus koraiensis) treated with Lithium Chloride (LiCl) and the potential of the chemical for inducing conditioned taste aversion (CTA) in red squirrels. In red squirrels, nut feeding declined dramatically during the first 4 days after feeding with LiCl-treated nuts. The ratio of LiCl-treated nuts eaten to total nuts eaten declined from the $1^{st}$ day in LC-1 and the $2^{nd}$ day in LC-2, along with a general reduction in quantity eaten. Thus, feeding with LiCl-treated nuts induced CTA from the 2nd day after feeding, and CTA remained constant until the $4^{th}$ day, but disappeared on the $5^{th}$ day. The squirrels ate an average of $757.0{\pm}106.1mg$ (n = 2, range $682.0\sim832.0$) of LiCl before dying on the $16^{th}$ day of the study. The lethal dose of LiCl was 2.32 mg LiCl/g body weight, and the average amount of LiCl needed to induce CTA was $23.0{\pm}4.24mg$ (20 mg in LC-1 and 26 mg in LC-2).

The purpose of this study was to find the optimal mixing condition of Rubus coreanus extracts, Rubus coreanus powder, and Rubus coreanus flavor for preparation of the Bokbunja chocolate. The physico-chemical characteristics of the Bokbunja chocolate were analyzed and evaluated. The sugar concentration of the Bokbunja chocolate had a tendency to increase as the addition of Rubus coreanus extracts decreased, but there was no significant differences. The hardness was increased with the decreasing Rubus coreanus extracts and increasing Rubus coreanus powder. The L (lightness) value increased with increasing Rubus coreanus extracts and decreasing Rubus coreanus powder, whereas a (redness) and b (yellowness) values increased by Rubus coreanus powder addition. The optimum mixing condition for the Bokbunja chocolate was decided by sensory evaluation. According to the results of sensory flavor, color, sweetness, texture and overall acceptability, the Bokbunja chocolate which was added Rubus coreanus extracts 30 g, Rubus coreanus powder 5 g, Rubus coreanus flavor 0.3 g obtained the best score overall.
This experiment was conducted to investigate heavy metal speciation and bioavailability from soil to the edible parts of water dropwort near industrial complex. The soils and water dropwort were collected from the paddies cultivating water dropwort(10 sites), stream sediments(5 sites), and background soils(3 sites) near industrial complex. The total concentrations of Cd Cu, and Ni were higher than those of permissible level for soil contamination(Cd 3, Cu 100, Ni $50mg\;kg^{-1}$ in soil) suggested by Kloke(1979). Dominant chemical forms of Cd in paddies cultivating water dropwort and stream sediments were exchangeable form(49.1-56.3%), and those of Cu, Zn, and Ni were Fe and Mn oxide bound and residual forms. The mobility factor of heavy metals in paddies cultivating water dropwort and stream sediments was in the order Cd>Zn>Ni>Cu>Pb, specially, the mobility factor of Cd (62-72%) were relatively higher than that of other metals in soils. The total concentrations of Cd in soils showed significant positive correlation with the ratios of exchangeable and Fe and Mn oxide bound forms, while correlated negatively with residual form. Heavy metal contents in root parts were higher than those in top parts of water dropwort. The bioavailability of water dropwort varied considerably between the different parts and heavy metals. Cd, Cu and Ni contents in water dropwort were correlated with each fractions in soils. Specially, the exchangeable form of Cd and Ni in soils showed significant positive correlation with the those contents of water dropwort.
