  • Building materials are composed of very complex chemical compounds, and these indoor building materials discharge very much Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs). We performed the environmental chamber test to investigate the Total VOCs(TVOCs) emission characteristics and emission factors about chemical and natural coating materials. As the result, we concluded that TVOCs emission are high at initial time and decreased in course of time. Natural paint was low emission level for TVOCs than chemical paint by small chamber test. The TVOCs emission factor-time profile showed a good fit with the results from the measured and predicted value.

  • A chemical examination of the aqueous acetone extract of the leaves of Securinega suffruticosa has led to the isolation of nine phenolic compounds. On the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidences, the structures of these compounds were established to be gallic acid(1), corilagin(2), helioscopinin B(3), geraniin(4), bergenin (5), norbergenin(6), 11-O-galloyl norbergenin(7), gallocatechin(8) and rutin(9).

  • The thermal and optical properties of two new series of thermotropic, liquid crystalline compounds were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and on the hot-stage of a polarizing microscope. The first series contained two identical mesogenic units, 4-(p-phenylbenzoyloxy) benzoate moieties, at both ends of the polymethylene spacer of varying lengths and the second series, mesogenic units with different substituents and the hexamethylene group as the central spacer. A thermodynamic analysis of the phase transitions of the compounds was made and the results were discussed in relation to their chemical structures.

  • Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry with an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization interface (LC/APCI/MS) is evaluated for the simultaneous determination of carbamate pesticides and organophosphorus pesticides in a single chromatographic analysis. APCI mass spectra of those compounds were obtrained to study their ionization characteristics. APCI provided abundant ions such as protonated molecules and characteristic fragment ions for carbamate pesticides and organophosphorus pesticides. To evaluate the feasibility of the LC/APCI/MS for a routine quantitative analysis, the linearity and repeatability of LC/APCI/MS were examined by measuring standard solution mixtures of five carbamate pesticides and four organophosphorus pesticides over the range of 1 to 100 ㎍/mL. Teh peak areas in chromatograms of characteristic ions for those compounds showed less than 3% of variation from run to run. The standard calibration curves for the nine pesticides show good linearity in the concentration range. The detection limits of the LC/APCI/MS system for those compounds range from 0.006 to 0.2 ng.

  • Column chromatographic fractionation of the methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of the stem-bark of Anacardium occidentale led to the isolation of five compounds (1-5). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic means by comparing spectral data to be β-sitosterol (1), 2,4-dihydroxy acetophenone (2), 1-monolinolein (3), ethyl oleate (4) and β-sitosterol-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (5). These compounds were evaluated for cytotoxicity against human cancer cell lines: A549, SCOV3 and rat normal cell line NRK49f. Compounds 2-5 were for the first time isolated from A. occidentale.
