KEPCO has installed Frequency Regulation ESS (FR ESS) of 376 MW since 2015. Frequency Regulation is ancillary service to support stabilizing system frequency, which is divided into governor free and automatic generation control. KEPCO operates FR ESS as governor free application and leads FR ESS market with capability of diverse demonstration and operation experiences. To expand FR ESS role during transient states of power system, KEPCO has extended operating time of charging and discharging. KEPCO has also changed speed droop lower than before to improve contribution on frequency compensation, and acquired much experiences of differentiating bad cells from others. Based on these technologies and know-hows, KEPCO Research Institutes received request of feasibility study and technical cooperation for overseas FR ESS business. This paper suggests the simple and practical method for making technological feasibility study of FR ESS.
Optimal cooling operation algorithm was developed based on a simulation case of a single family house model equipped with renewable energy facility. EnergyPlus simulation results were used as virtual test data. The model contained three energy storage elements: thermal heat capacity of the living room, chilled water storage tank, and battery. Their charging and discharging schedules were optimized so that daily electricity bill became minimal. As an optimization tool, linear programming was considered because it was possible to obtain results in real time. For its adoption, EnergyPlus-based house model had to be linearly approximated. Results of this study revealed that dynamic cooling load of the living room could be approximated by a linear RC model. Scheduling based on the linear programming was then compared to that by a nonlinear optimization algorithm which was made using GenOpt developed by a national lab in USA. They showed quite similar performances. Therefore, linear programming can be a practical solution to optimal operation scheduling if linear dynamic models are tuned to simulate their real equivalents with reasonable accuracy.
A microgrid which is composed of distributed generation systems, energy storage systems and loads is operated in the grid-connected mode and in the islanded mode. Especially, in the islanded mode, a microgrid should maintain frequency in the allowed range. The frequency is decided by a balance between power supply and power demand. In general, the frequency is controlled by using battery energy storage systems (BESSs) in the microgrid. Especially, droop control is applied to controlling BESSs in the microgrid. Meanwhile, over-charging and deep-discharging of BESS in operation and control cause life-shortening of batteries. In this paper, a fuzzy droop control is proposed to change droop gains adaptively by considering state of charge (SOC) of BESSs to improve the life cycle of the battery. The proposed fuzzy droop control adjusts droop gains based on SOC of BESSs in real time. In other to show the performance of the proposed fuzzy droop control, simulation based on Matlab/Simulink is performed. In addition, comparison of the convention droop control and the proposed fuzzy droop control is also performed.
This paper presents effective design schemes for a photovoltaic (PV) and battery hybrid system that includes state-of-the-art technologies such as maximum power point tracking scheme for PV arrays, an effective charging/discharging circuit for batteries, and grid-interfacing power inverters. Compared to commonly-used PV systems, the proposed configuration has more flexibility and autonomy in controlling individual components of the PV-battery hybrid system. This paper also proposes an intelligent coordination scheme for the components of the PV-battery hybrid system to improve the efficiency of renewable energy resources and peak-load management. The proposed algorithm is based on a rule-based expert system that has excellent capability to optimize multi-objective functions. The proposed configuration and algorithms are investigated via switching-level simulation studies of the PV-battery hybrid system.
The flying capacitor voltage control of the flying capacitor multi-level inverter (FCMLI) is very important for safe operation. The voltage unbalancing of flying capacitors caused serious problems in safety and reliability of system. In the FCMLI, balancing problem of the flying capacitor has its applications limited. The voltage unbalance is occurred by the difference of each capacitors charging and discharging time applied to FCMLI. This paper investigates and analyzes multi-carrier PWM methods to solve capacitor voltage balancing problem. The Phase-Shift PWM (PSPWM) method that is commonly used, The Modified Carrier-Redistribution PWM (MCRPWM) method and The Saw-Tooth-Rotation PWM (STRPWM) method are discussed and compared with respect to switching state, balancing voltage of capacitors and output waveform. These three PWM methods are analyzed by using a flying capacitor three-level inverter and provided result through simulation. Finally, the harmonics about the output voltages of their methods are compared using the harmonic distortion factor (HDF).
In this study, a bidirectional DC-DC converter for idle stop and go (ISG) is developed to reduce fuel consumption. A three-phase non-isolated half-bridge converter is selected through a design method by considering efficiency and volume. According to the state of charge of the batteries at both the low-voltage and high-voltage sides, buck mode, which charges a low-voltage battery from the generated motor energy, and boost mode, which provides power to the motor from the low- and high-voltage battery sides, are required in the ISG system. Hence, an autonomous and seamless bidirectional control method using a variable current limiter is proposed for mode change. A 1.8 kW engineering sample of the proposed converter has been built and tested to verify the validity of the proposed concept. The maximum efficiencies, including gate driver and control circuit losses, are 96.4% in charging mode and 96.1% in discharging mode.
An energy storage system (ESS) is applied to increase the energy efficiency of large plants or buildings that consume much energy, to improve the power quality of power systems, and to stabilize renewable energy source such as photovoltaic or wind turbine. The ESS is composed of a power conditioning system (PCS) and an energy storage. The battery is used as the energy storage. The battery is needed to design and verify a hardware and control system of PCS. Usually, a battery simulator is used instead of a battery, which is costly and hard to manage. In this paper, the development of the battery simulator for performance verification of the MW-class PCS is described. The battery simulator simulates the charging and discharging characteristics of batteries to design and verify the hardware and control system of PCS.
A conventional single-phase high-power system typically generates a large AC line input current at universal 90 VAC condition. Sometimes, this phenomenon can block the Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB), which causes problems. Replacing power facilities is essential to ensure smooth operations. Thus, this paper proposes a method that can drive higher power than the limit of conventional power facilities. The proposed method can reduce the large AC line input current by limiting the input power of Power Factor Correction (PFC). An additional battery circuit can supplement the power deficiency. Specifically, a bidirectional converter with charging and discharging functions was adopted for the battery circuit. Finally, the validity of the proposed system could be confirmed by modal analysis and simulation, and an experiment in 2 KW condition was implemented with a prototype sample as well.
The inconsistencies between paralleled battery cells are becoming more considerable issue in high capacity battery applications like electric vehicles. Due to differences in state-of-charge (SOC) and internal resistance within individual cells in parallel, charging or discharging current is not appropriately balanced to each cell in terms of SOC, which may shorten the lifetime or sometimes cause safety issues. In this paper, an intelligent cell-balancing algorithm is proposed to overcome the inconsistency issue especially for paralleled battery cells. In this scheme, SOC information collected in the sub-BMS module is sent to the main-BMS module, where the number of parallel cells to be connected to DC bus is continuously updated based on the suggested SOC comparison rule. To verify the method, operation of the algorithm on 4 paralleled battery cells are simulated on Matlab/Simulink. The simulation result shows that the SOCs of paralleled cells are evenly redistributed. It is expected that the proposed algorithm provides high reliable and prolong the life cycle and working capacity of the battery pack.
The superconducting magnets have a large inductance as well as high operating current. Therefore, mega-joule scale energy can be stored in the magnet. The energy stored in the magnet is sufficient to damage the magnet when a quench occurs. Quench heater and dump resistor can be used to protect the magnet. However, using quench heater to create quench resistors through heat transfer can be slower than instantly switching resistors. Also, electrical short, overheating and breakdown can occur due to quench heater. Moreover, the number of dump resistor should be limited to avoid large terminal voltage. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a quench protection method for extracting the energy stored in a magnet by charging and discharging energy through a capacitor switching without increasing resistance. The simulation results show that the proposed system has a faster current decay within the allowable voltage level.
