  • In this paper, we present a fatigue life prediction methodology using multiple S-N curves according to the different stress states of laminated composites. The stress states of the plies of the laminated composites are classified into five modes: longitudinal tension or compression and transverse tension or compression, and shear according to the maximum stress criterion and Puck's criterion with a scaling factor K. This methodology has advantages in computational cost, and it can also consider microstructural characteristics of the composites by applying different S-N curves. The S-N curves for the fatigue analysis are obtained by experimental fatigue test. The proposed methodol is implemented into commercial software, ABAQUS user material subroutine and therefore, the fatigue analysis is conducted using the structural analysis results. The finite element (FE) simulation results are presented for unidirectional composites with and without open-hole. The FE simulation results show that the stress condition is different depending on the fiber orientation of the unidirectional composite, so the fatigue life is calculated with different S-N curves.

  • In this paper, breakdown voltages in $SF_6-N_2$ mixtures were experimentally investigated to understand characteristics of dielectric strength and physical phenomena in nonuniform field disturbed by a needle shape protrusion. The test voltages are the lightning impulse$(\pm1.2/44 \mus)$ and the damped oscillatory impulse$(\pm400 ns / 0.83 MHz)$ voltages which can be occurred by the operation of disconnecting switches in gas-insulated switchgears(GIS). The effects of the polarity and wave shape of the test voltages, and the gas pressure on the V-t characteristics were in detail examined. The V-t characteristic curves were measured in different two ways : (1) one is the method by taking the maximum voltage recorded at or prior to breakdown against the time to breakdown, that is, the Procedures recommended in IEC 60060-1, (2) the other is the method by taking the voltage at the instant of chopping against the time to breakdown. As a result, the V-t characteristics of $SF_6-N_2$ mixtures in nonuniform electric field were significantly affected by the polarity and wave shape of the applied voltages. The positive breakdown voltages resulted in lower breakdown voltages in the time ranges considered, and the V-t curves for the negative oscillatory impulse voltage were extended over the longer time range. For the lightning impulse voltages, the V-t curves obtained by IEC Pub. 60060-1 were nearly same with the V-t curves obtained by the voltage at the instant of chopping against the time to breakdown. It is clear that the actual breakdown voltages were much lower than the maximum voltages appearing at or prior to breakdown because of the displacement current produced as a result of the dV/dt during the oscillatory transient voltage app1ication. The scattering of the negative actual breakdown voltages was much larger than that of the positive.

  • From the time the product is manufactured until it is carried and ultimately used, the product is subjected to some form of handling and transportations. During this process, the product can be subjected to many potential hazards. One of them is the damage caused by shocks. In order to design a product-package system to protect the product, the peak acceleration or G force to the product that causes damage needs to be determined. When a corrugated fiberboard box loaded with products is dropped onto the ground, part of the energy acquired due to the action of the gravitational acceleration during the free fall is dissipated in the product and the package in various ways. The shock absorbing characteristics of the packaging cushion materials are presented as a family of cushion curves in which curves showing peak accelerations during impacts for a range of static loads are shown for several drop heights. The new method for determining the shock absorbing characteristics of cushioning materials for protective packaging has been described and demonstrated. It has been shown that cushion curves can be produced by combining the static compression and impact characteristics of the material. The dynamic factor was determined by the iterative least mean squares (ILMS) optimization technique in which the discrepancies between peak acceleration data predicted from the theoretical model and obtained from the impact tests are minimized. The approach enabled an efficient determination of cushion curves from a small number of experimental impact data.

  • This paper presents the development of seismic fragility curves for a precast reinforced concrete bridge instrumented with a structural health monitoring (SHM) system. The bridge is located near an active seismic fault in the Dominican Republic (DR) and provides the only access to several local communities in the aftermath of a potential damaging earthquake; moreover, the sample bridge was designed with outdated building codes and uses structural detailing not adequate for structures in seismic regions. The bridge was instrumented with an SHM system to extract information about its state of structural integrity and estimate its seismic performance. The data obtained from the SHM system is integrated with structural models to develop a set of fragility curves to be used as a quantitative measure of the expected damage; the fragility curves provide an estimate of the probability that the structure will exceed different damage limit states as a function of an earthquake intensity measure. To obtain the fragility curves a digital twin of the bridge is developed combining a computational finite element model and the information extracted from the SHM system. The digital twin is used as a response prediction tool that minimizes modeling uncertainty, significantly improving the predicting capability of the model and the accuracy of the fragility curves. The digital twin was used to perform a nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) with selected ground motions that are consistent with the seismic fault and site characteristics. The fragility curves show that for the maximum expected acceleration (with a 2% probability of exceedance in 50 years) the structure has a 62% probability of undergoing extensive damage. This is the first study presenting fragility curves for civil infrastructure in the DR and the proposed methodology can be extended to other structures to support disaster mitigation and post-disaster decision-making strategies.

  • This article presents a study of the largest-ever (height = 220 m) cooling tower using the large eddy simulation (LES) method. Information about fluid fields around the tower and 3D aerodynamic time history in full construction process were obtained, and the wind pressure distribution along the entire tower predicted by the developed model was compared with standard curves and measured curves to validate the effectiveness of the simulating method. Based on that, average wind pressure distribution and characteristics of fluid fields in the construction process of ultra-large cooling tower were investigated. The characteristics of fluid fields in full construction process and their working principles were investigated based on wind speeds and vorticities under different construction conditions. Then, time domain characteristics of ultra-large cooling towers in full construction process, including fluctuating wind loads, extreme wind loads, lift and drag coefficients, and relationship of measuring points, were studied and fitting formula of extreme wind load as a function of height was developed based on the nonlinear least square method. Additionally, the frequency domain characteristics of wind loads on the constructing tower, including wind pressure power spectrum at typical measuring points, lift and drag power spectrum, circumferential correlations between typical measuring points, and vertical correlations of lift coefficient and drag coefficient, were analyzed. The results revealed that the random characteristics of fluctuating wind loads, as well as corresponding extreme wind pressure and power spectra curves, varied significantly and in real time with the height of the constructing tower. This study provides references for design of wind loads during construction period of ultra-large cooling towers.

  • During this study, various stress path tests in previous isotropic and anisotropic (compression and tension) stress histories are performed on weathered granite soil sampled at Iksan, Jeonbuk. Yielding points are determined from various stress-strain curves(stress ratio-shear strain, volumetric strain, normalized energy and dissipated total energy curves). The shape and characteristics of isotropic and anisotropic yielding curves are examined. The main results are summarized as follows . 1) Yielding curries defined from stress ratio - normarized energy and dissipated total energy curves show almost perfect ellipse. 2) Directions of plastic strain incremental vector are not perpendicular to yielding curve. 3) Normarized energy and dissipated total energy spread with similar tendency with respect to yielding currie in stress space.

  • During this study, constant stress ratio tests with previous compression anisotropic stress history are performed on compacted decomposed granite soil sampled at Iksan, Jeonbuk. Yielding points are determined from stress-strain curves. The shape and characteristics of compression anisotropic yield curves is examined. In addition, the measured value of yielding curve and stress-strain behavior is predicted by Yasufuku's anisotropic constitutive model based on non-associated flow rule. The main results are summarized as follows : 1) Shape of yielding curves shows almost ellipse but asymmetry with respect to stress path during previous consolidation stress. 2) Yasufuku's anisotropic constitutive model is suitable in evaluation of yielding curves on anisotropic consolidated decomposed granite soil. 3) The predicted stress-strain curve shows reasonable agreement to measured behaviours.

  • Based on the 2-dimensional charge-control simulation[4], a purely analytical model for MODFET's is proposed. In this model, proper treatment of the diffusion effect in the 2-DEG transport due to the gradual channel opening along the 2-DEG channel was made to explain the enhanced mobility and increased thershold voltage. The channel thickness and gate capacitance are experssed as functions of gate vlotage including subthreshold characteristics of the MODFET's analytically. By introducing the finite channel opening and an effective channel-length modulation, the slope of the saturation region of the I-V curves was modeled. The smooth transition of the I-V curves from linear-to-saturation region of the I-V curves was possible using the continuous Troffimenkoff-type of field-dependent mobility. Furthermore, a correction factor f was introduced to account for the finite transtition section forming between the GCA and the saturated section. This factor removes the large discrepanicies in the saturation region fo the I-V curves presicted by existing 1-dimensional models. The fitting parameters chosen in our model were found to be predictable and vary over relatively small range of values.

  • The estimation of mortality characteristics of industrial property is an important adjunct to engineering valuation and depreciation estimation. Once the important of depreciation estimation is determined, it is desirable to understand the processes upon which these estimates are based. The Iowa type survivor curves are a set of generalized retirement dispersion models. These curves were based on analysis of actual retirement experience and represent typical retirement behavior patterns likely to be encountered. The retirement rate of Iowa type survivor curves on the semiconductor equipments in Korea industry was estimated by the life estimation process. In this paper, estimates of service lives based on directly observed data of the domestic semiconductor equipments are presented.

  • The Preisach model needs density function or Everett function for the sample material to calculate the hysteresis characteristics. To obtain these functions, many experimental data obtained from the first order transition curves are required. However, it is not simple task to measure the curves. In this paper, a simple generalized technique to get the Everett function using saturation hysteresis loop and two first order transition curves is proposed. These three data makes three equations for the proposed Everett function model and we can get three variables by those equations. From the simulation, we got acceptable results.
