Recently, causality analysis of source time series extracted from EEG or MEG signals is becoming of great importance in human brain mapping studies and noninvasive diagnosis of various brain diseases. Two approaches have been widely used for the analyses: one is independent component analysis (ICA), and the other is multiple signal classification (MUSIC). To the best of our knowledge, however, any comparison studies to reveal the difference of the two approaches have not been reported. In the present study, we compared the performance of the two different techniques, ICA and MUSIC, especially focusing on how accurately they can estimate and separate various brain electrical signals such as linear, nonlinear, and chaotic signals without a priori knowledge. Results of the realistic simulation studies, adopting directed transfer function (DTF) and Granger causality (GC) as measures of the accurate extraction of source time series, demonstrated that the MUSIC-based approach is more reliable than the ICA-based approach.

We have investigated the dynamical stability of the proposed companions orbiting the Algol type short-period eclipsing binary SW Lyncis (Kim et al. 2010). The two candidate companions are of stellar to substellar nature, and were inferred from timing measurements of the system's primary and secondary eclipses. We applied well-tested numerical techniques to accurately integrate the orbits of the two companions and to test for chaotic dynamical behavior. We carried out the stability analysis within a systematic parameter survey varying both the geometries and orientation of the orbits of the companions, as well as their masses. In all our numerical integrations we found that the proposed SW Lyn multi-body system is highly unstable on time-scales on the order of 1000 years. Our results cast doubt on the interpretation that the timing variations are caused by two companions. This work demonstrates that a straightforward dynamical analysis can help to test whether a best-fit companion-based model is a physically viable explanation for measured eclipse timing variations. We conclude that dynamical considerations reveal that the proposed SW Lyncis multi-body system most likely does not exist or the companions have significantly different orbital properties from those conjectured in Kim et al. (2010).
The purpose of this study was to examine children's self-regulation and their problem behavior according to family interaction types. The subjects were 227 children and their mothers, and 14 teachers in Jeonbuk. To obtain family interaction types, self-questionnaires of FACES III are given to mothers. Also, self-questionnaires of children's self-regulation and problem behavior were given to teachers. The data were analyzed by computing t-test, ANOVA, Duncan post test, and multiple liner regression. The results were as follows. First, There was a difference in the children's self regulation and problem behavior, but not in family cohesion and adaptability, according to the children's sex, age, and family variables. Second, it was found that there was a difference in self-regulation and problem behavior according to family interaction types. It showed that self-regulation was higher and problem behavior was lower in the most 'enmeshed' families in cohesion and the most 'chaotic' families in adaptability. Third, considering the relative strength of each variable on children's problem behavior, it was shown that children's sex and age had the greatest influence on problem behavior, followed by self-regulation and family's cohesion. In conclusion, it is suggested that the efforts to improve family cohesion as a psychological environment should be made in order to increase the children's self regulation and to decrease the children's problem behavior.
High resolution rainfall data at 1-hour or a finer scale are essential for reliable flood analysis and forecasting; nevertheless, many observations, forecasts, and climate projections are still given at coarse temporal resolutions. This study aims to evaluate a chaotic method for disaggregation of 6-hour rainfall data sets so as to apply operational 6-hour rainfall forecasts of the Korean Meteorological Association to flood models. We computed parameters of a state-of-the-art multiplicative random cascade model with two combinations of cascades, namely uniform splitting and diversion, using rainfall observations at Seoul station, and compared statistical performance. We additionally disaggregated 6-hour rainfall time series at 58 stations with the uniform splitting and evaluated temporal transferability of the parameters and changes in multifractal properties. Results showed that the uniform splitting outperformed the diversion in reproduction of observed statistics, and hence is better to be used for disaggregation of 6-hour rainfall forecasts. We also found that multifractal properties of rainfall observations has adequate temporal consistency with an indication of gradually increasing rainfall intensity across South Korea.
In the construction of successful fuzzy models and/or controllers for nonlinear systems, the identification of a good fuzzy inference system is an important yet difficult problem, which is traditionally accomplished by a time-consuming trial-and-error process. In this paper, we propose a systematic identification procedure for complex multi-input single-output nonlinear systems with DNA coding method. A DNA coding method is optimization algorithm based on biological DNA as conventional genetic algorithms(GAs) are. The strings in the DNA coding method are variable-length strings, while standard GAs work with a fixed-length coding scheme. the DNA coding method is well suited to learning because it allows a flexible representation of a fuzzy inference system. We also propose a new coding method fur applying the DNA coding method to the identification of fuzzy models. This coding scheme can effectively represent the zero-order Takagi-Sugeno(TS) fuzzy model. To acquire optimal TS fuzzy model with higher accuracy and economical size, we use the DNA coding method to optimize the parameters and the number of fuzzy inference system. In order to demonstrate the superiority and efficiency of the proposed scheme, we finally show its application to a Duffing-forced oscillation system.
PD phenomena can be regarded as a deterministic dynamical process where PD should be occurred if the local electric field be reached to be sufficiently high. And thus, its mathematical model can be described by either difference equations or differential equations using several state variables obtained from the time sequential measured data of PD signals. These variables can provide rich and complex behavior of detectable time series, for which Chaos theory can be employed. In this respect, a new PD pattern recognition method is proposed and named as 'Chaotic Analysis of Partial Discharges (CAPD)' for this work. For this purpose, six types of specimen are designed and made as the models of the possible defects that may cause sudden failures of the underground power transmission cables under service, and partial discharge signals, generated from those samples, are detected and then analyzed by means of CAPD. Throughout the work, qualitative and quantitative properties related to the PD signals from different defects are analyzed by use of attractor in phase space, information dimensions ($D_0$ and D2), Lyapunov exponents and K-S entropy as well. Based on these results, it could be pointed out that the nature of defect seems to be identified more distinctively when the CAPD is combined with traditional statistical method such as PRPDA. Furthermore, the relationship between PD magnitude and the occurrence timing is investigated with a view to simulating PD phenomena.
In this paper, we propose a new architecture of Self-Organizing Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Networks(SOFPNN) by means of genetically optimized fuzzy polynomial neuron(FPN) and discuss its comprehensive design methodology involving mechanisms of genetic optimization, especially genetic algorithms(GAs). The conventional SOFPNNs hinges on an extended Group Method of Data Handling(GMDH) and exploits a fixed fuzzy inference type in each FPN of the SOFPNN as well as considers a fixed number of input nodes located in each layer. The design procedure applied in the construction of each layer of a SOFPNN deals with its structural optimization involving the selection of preferred nodes (or FPNs) with specific local characteristics (such as the number of input variables, the order of the polynomial of the consequent part of fuzzy rules, a collection of the specific subset of input variables, and the number of membership function) and addresses specific aspects of parametric optimization. Therefore, the proposed SOFPNN gives rise to a structurally optimized structure and comes with a substantial level of flexibility in comparison to the one we encounter in conventional SOFPNNs. To evaluate the performance of the genetically optimized SOFPNN, the model is experimented with using two time series data(gas furnace and chaotic time series).
An oscillatory motion of natural convection in a two-dimensional square enclosure fitted with a horizontal partition is investigated numerically. The enclosure was composed of the lower hot and the upper cold horizontal walls and the adiabatic vertical walls, and a partition was positioned perpendicularly at the mid-height of one vertical insulated wall. The governing equations are solved by using the finite element method with Galerkin method. The computations were carried out with the variations of the partition length and Rayleigh number based on the temperature difference between two horizontal walls and the enclosure height with water(Pr=4.95). As the results, an oscillatory motion of natural convection has perfectly shown the periodicity with the decrease of Rayleigh number, and the stability was reduced to a chaotic state with the increase of Rayleigh number. The period of oscillation gets shorten with the decrease of the partition length and the increase of Rayleigh number. The frequency of oscillation obtained by the variations of stream function is more similar to the experimental results than that of the average Nusselt number. The stability of oscillation grows worse with the increase of Rayleigh number. The transition Rayleigh number for the chaos is gradually decreased with the increase of the partition length.
