A Survey of the Chinese's Preference for Kimchi to Expand Chinese Market in Shandong Province (한국 전통 김치의 중국 시장 확대를 위한 중국 산동성 지역 성인의 기호도 조사)

  • This study surveyed the Korean Kimchi preference for Chinese, potential Kimchi improvement for Chinese market adaptation and Kimchi application for Chinese cuisine, with the aim of spreading the recognition of Kimchi throughout the world, especially in China, by giving information and developing local types which could be expected to be suitable for utilization of Chinese food life. The subjects were consisted of 298 Chinese(male 108, female 190) residing in Weihai, Yantai and Qingdao, in Shandong province. The questionnaire form was developed and used for self administered evaluation. The collected data were analyzed by SAS package. Baechu Kimchi was found to be the most well-known Kimchi for Chinese, and Kkakdugi, Oi Kimchi, Yoelmu Kimchi and Nabak Kimchi were followed in order. Baechu Kimchi(75.9%) was found to be the most favorite Kimchi for Chinese, and Oi Kimchi(59.3%), Kkakdugi(52.8%), Nabak Kimchi(39.3%) and Yoelmu Kimchi(37.7%) were followed in order. The subjects knew about the Korean foods made with Kimchi, such as Kimchi kimbap(74.8%), Kimchi bibimbap(71.5%), Kimchi bokkeumbap(61.7%), Kimchi guk(58.1%) in order. But the experience of consumption for Korean foods made with Kimchi was low compared to the knowledge of the Korean foods made with Kimchi. Chinese's most favorite foods made with Kimchi were Kimchi bossam, Kimchi bibimbap, Kimchi bokkeumbap and Kimchi kimbap, Kimchi bokkeum, Kimchi tteoksanjeok and Kimchi jeon in order. Among the 9 kinds of new Chinese foods made with Kimchi, Kimchi chao zhurou(fried pork with Kimchi), Kimchi chao mian(fried noodle with Kimchi), Kimchi chao youcai xiaren(fried rape and prawn with Kimchi), Kimchi zhuroushuijiao(dumpling with pork and Kimchi), Kimchi gedatang(wheat flakes soup with Kimchi) and Kimchi hundun(dumpling with Kimchi), and Kimchi youbing(panfried flour with Kimchi), Kimchi lamian(handmade knife-cut noodle with Kimchi) and Kimchi tangyuan(tangyuan with Kimchi) were preferred foods by the subjects in order.

Subtype Distribution of Blastocystis in Communities along the Chao Phraya River, Thailand

  • Blastocystis is a common zoonotic enteric protozoan that has been classified into 17 distinct subtypes (STs). A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence and subtype distributions of Blastocystis in villagers living along the Chao Phraya River, Ayutthaya Province, Thailand, and to assess the risk of zoonotic infection. In total, 220 stool samples were collected, and DNA was extracted. PCR and sequencing were performed with primers targeting the small-subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) genes. Blastocystis was present in 5.9% (13/220) of samples, and ST3 (5.0%; 11/220) was the predominant subtype, followed by ST2 (0.45%; 1/220) and ST6 (0.45%; 1/220). Phylogenetic trees were constructed with the maximum-likelihood method based on the Hasegawa-Kishino-Yano + G + I model, neighbor-joining, and maximum parsimony methods. The percentage of bootstrapped trees in which the associated taxa clustered together was relatively high. All the sequences of the Blastocystis-positive samples (KU051524-KU051536) were closely related to those from animals (pig, cattle, and chicken), indicating a zoonotic risk. Therefore, the villagers require proper health education, especially regarding the prevention of parasitic infection, to improve their personal hygiene and community health. Further studies are required to investigate the Blastocystis STs in the animals living in these villages.

Prevalence and Genetic Characterization of Toxoplasma gondii in Pet Dogs in Central China

  • The prevalence and genotype of Toxoplasma gondii infection in dogs in Henan Province, Central China was investigated. A total of 125 blood samples were collected from pet dogs during April to June 2013, and all samples were examined by indirect hemagglutination antibody test (IHA) and nested PCR. The overall T. gondii prevalence in pet dogs was 24.0% (30/125), with 20.8% (26/125) in IHA and 10.4% (13/125) in PCR, respectively. No statistical associations were found between animal gender and age and the prevalence of T. gondii infection. Thirteen positive DNA samples were genotyped using 11 PCR-RFLP markers, including SAG1, (3'+5') SAG2, alt.SAG2, SAG3, BTUB, GRA6, c22-8, c29-2, L358, PK1, and Apico. Of these, only 2 samples were genotyped with complete data for all loci, and a novel genotype (type III at SAG3 and GRA6 loci, and type I at other loci) was identified. This is the first report of genetic characterization of T. gondii infection in dogs in China.

Effects of Honeybee(Apis mellifera ligustica) Venom Treatment on the Productivity in Pigs (생봉독 처리가 돼지의 생산성에 미치는 효과)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate effects of honeybee venom treatment on the body weight gain, feed conversion and growth rate' in pigs. One hundred twenty nine piglets(LY) from 12 sows were allocated into two groups; honeybee venom-treated group (66 piglets from 6 sows) and non-treated control group (63 piglets from 6 sows). Natural honeybee venom was administrated at 0, 3, 14, 30, and 74 days after birth. The acupoints were Hai-men(ST-25), Du-kou(CV-8) and liao-chao(GV-I) points at 0 day, the regions of castration and tail ampution at 3 days, liao-chao(GV-1) and Bai-hui(GV-20) points at 14(weaning), 30(move into piglet stall) and 74(move into grower stall) days after birth. Control group was injected 1 ml of saline to the same site. Average body weight at 150 days after birth was 98.44 kg in bee venom treated group and 86.24 kg in control group, respectively. Average body weight of treated group was significantly increased by 14.15%(P < 0.0001). Average daily gain of bee venom treated group and control group were 649 g and 569 g, respectively, increased by 14.06%(P< 0.0001). Feed conversion of the treated group was 2.21 and control group was 2.49, increased by 11.25% in control group(P < 0.001). Survival rate at weaning was 95.5 % in treated group and 92.0% in control group, at growing(74 days after birth) was 92.4% in treated group and 85.7% in control group and survival rate at finishing(l50 days after birth) was 89.5 % and 79.4 %, respectively. Collecting together, the results in this study showed that growth performance and feed conversion were increased by treatment of natural honeybee venom to pigs. These results suggested that the treatment of bee venom could be used effectively for the increase productivity of livestock industry.
