  • We report numerical simulations to investigate of the dependendce of the on/off current ratio and channel charge distributions in silicon nanowire (SiNW) field-effect transistors (FETs) on the channel width and thicknesses. In order to investigate the transport behavior in devices with different channel geometries, we have performed detailed two-dimensional simulations of SiNWFETs and control FETs with a fixed channel length L of $10\;{\mu}m$, but varying the channel width W from 5 nm to $5\;{\mu}m$, and thickness t from 10 nm to 30 nm. We have show that $Q_{ON}/Q_{OFF}$ drastically decreases (from $^{\sim}2.9{\times}10^4$ to $^{\sim}9.8{\times}10^3$) as the channel thickness increases (from 10 nm to 30 nm). As a result of the simulation using a quantum model, even higher charge density in the bottom of SiNW channel was observed then in the bottom of control channel.

  • In this paper, voice activity detection (VAD) for dual-channel noisy speech recognition is proposed in which spatial cues are employed. In the proposed method, a probability model for speech presence/absence is constructed using spatial cues obtained from dual-channel input signal, and a speech activity interval is detected through this probability model. In particular, spatial cues are composed of interaural time differences and interaural level differences of dual-channel speech signals, and the probability model for speech presence/absence is based on a Gaussian kernel density. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed VAD method, speech recognition is performed for speech segments that only include speech intervals detected by the proposed VAD method. The performance of the proposed method is compared with those of several methods such as an SNR-based method, a direction of arrival (DOA) based method, and a phase vector based method. It is shown from the speech recognition experiments that the proposed method outperforms conventional methods by providing relative word error rates reductions of 11.68%, 41.92%, and 10.15% compared with SNR-based, DOA-based, and phase vector based method, respectively.

  • Marine traffic system is composed of ship, ship's operators and traffic environment The navigation channel is a part of traffic environment and the design of channel is a crucial factor for safe navigation This paper aims to evaluate ship-handling difficulty in straight and bend channels with an Environmental Stress model(ES-model). The ES-model is used to evaluate ship handling difficulty quantitatively on the basis of the ship operator's subjective judgement for safety in navigation The calculation of ES value was made on the basis of three factors such as channel width, ship's length and speed in straight and channels for safe navigation. The interrelation between factors was analyzed and reasonable design standards of channel width, ship's length and speed were proposed for safe navigation of ship in bend channel.

  • In this paper, we design and implement the upstream packet bandwidth allocation algorithm on OPNET-based DOCSIS 3.0 simulator including channel-bonding CM (Cable Modem)s. Previous DOCSIS CM could not support channel bonding, it has problem in upstream bandwidth allocation and determine the contention area. The proposed upstream bandwidth allocation algorithm has been improved the queuing time and success rate. For the simulation, we design the MAC frame structure with channel bonding supported CM and not. And then, this paper design and implement the CMTS node model, CM node model, CMTS process model, and CM process model.

  • For designing radio communication systems, radio-channel effects must be considered in order to obtain the desired communication quality, transmitting power, transmission speed and bit error rate. In radio channel, one of major factors that degrade communication quality is multipath fading between transmitting and receiving points. Therefore, a channel model which can describe fading effects correctly is requested. This paper deals with the composition of the channel simulator model that describes multipath fading effects and delay times which occur in the channel. For the performance analysis of the proposed model, trandmitting signal is used in the simulation. From simulation results, it can be shown that probability density function. level crossing rates and average fading-duration time distribution of the faded receive signal are very similar with theoretic values.

  • Mombasa is the principle port of Kenya, serving inland countries in Eastern and central Africa. Mombasa port has undergone a massive infrastructure upgrade and dredging works with an expectation that more vessels and large post Panamax ships will be able to enter Mombasa port. Therefore, it is vital to carry out a marine traffic risk assessment in order to quantify the degree of navigation safety needed in the Mombasa approach channel and also to evaluate the navigation risk imposed on transit traffic by local ferry traffic. In this paper, a marine traffic risk assessment is carried out using the IWRAP mk2, Environmental Stress (ES) model, and the PARK model. Risk assessment results show that Likoni area has an unacceptable stress/risk ranking at 20.7% by the ES model and 38.89% by the PARK model. The IWRAP mk2 model shows that the crossing area has the highest risk of crossing collision and the area at the entrance to the inner channel has a high risk of grounding. The conclusions derived from this study will provide the basis for proposing the most effective countermeasure to improve navigation safety in the Mombasa approach channel.

  • In the conventional GaAs MESFET circuit simulation, the DC and transient simulation results are often failed due to the discontinuities of the first and second order derivatives arising from the use of separate models in linear, saturation, and transition regions. In this paper, we propose a unified drain current-voltage model by using a unified channel length modulation effect that is derived by extending the channel length modulation effect in the saturation region to the linear region. Calculated results from the proposed drain current-voltage model agree well with the results of Shur model. Also, we propose a unified capacitance model for linear, transition, and saturation regions by using a unified channel length modulation effect. Its results from the proposed capacitance model agree well with 2-D device simulation results. Thus, the proposed models are expected to be useful in circuit simulations.

  • Nowadays, Power Line Communication (PLC) is gaining high attention from industry and electric supply companies for the services like demand response, demand side management and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). The reliable services to consumers using PLC can be provided by utilizing an efficient PLC channel for which sophisticated channel modeling is very important. This paper presents characterization of a Low Voltage (LV) access network for Narrowband Power Line Communications (NB-PLC) using transmission line (TL) theory and a Simulink model. The TL theory analysis not only includes the constant parameters but frequency selectivity is also introduced in these parameters such as resistance, conductance and impedances. However, the proposed Simulink channel model offers an analysis and characterization of capacitive coupler, network impedance and channel transfer function for NB-PLC. Analysis of analytical and simulated results shows a close agreement of the channel transfer function. In the absence of a standardized NBPLC channel model, this research work can prove significant in improving the efficiency and accuracy of NB-PLC communication transceivers for Smart Grid communications.

  • A practical iterative channel estimation technique is proposed for the multiple-input-multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system in the high-speed mobile environment, such as high speed railway scenario. In the iterative algorithm, the Kalman filter and data detection are jointed to estimate the time-varying channel, where the detection error is considered as part of the noise in the Kalman recursion in each iteration to reduce the effect of the detection error propagation. Moreover, the employed Kalman filter is from the canonical state space model, which does not include the parameters of the autoregressive (AR) model, so the proposed method does not need to estimate the parameters of AR model, whose accuracy affects the convergence speed. Simulation results show that the proposed method is robust to the fast time-varying channel, and it can obtain more gains compared with the available methods.
