  • In this paper, a technique is proposed that enables secondary users to evaluate channel availability in cognitive radio networks. Here, secondary users estimate the utilization of channels via predicting the traffic pattern of primary user, and select a proper channel for radio transmission. The proposed technique reduces the channel switching rate of secondary users (the rate of switching from one channel to another) and the interference on primary users, while maintaining a reasonable call blocking rate of secondary users.

  • In wireless X networks where all transmitters send the independent messages to all receivers, the theoretical bound on the degrees of freedom (DOF) and interference alignment (IA) scheme for its achievability are given by Cadambe and Jafar [1]. However, IA scheme for wireless X network may be infeasible in practice unless the transmitters have the perfect channel information. In addition, if the transmitter with single antenna uses time-varying channel coefficients as a beamforming vector, the infinite channel extension is required to achieve the theoretical bound on the DOF of wireless X networks with perfect IA scheme. In this paper, we consider K-user MIMO X network where K transmitters and K receivers have M antennas each. While the beamforming vectors have been constructed with multiple channel uses over multiple time slot in the earlier work, we consider the beamforming vectors constructed only by a spatial signature over unit time. Accordingly the channel information at the transmitters can be available instantaneously. Then we propose the perfect IA scheme with no channel extension. Based on our sum-rate analysis and the simulation results, we confirm that our proposed scheme can achieve MK/2 DOF which is quite close to the theoretical bound on the DOF region of wireless X networks.

  • CDMA scheme has received a great deal of attenttion as a multiple-access method for future mobile networks. Its main advantage: are higher radio capacity and the capacity of flexible data tranmission. And CDMA scheme is a key technology in the proposals submitted to the ITU on next generation multimedia system with integrated services, namely real-time voice services and non real-time data services. In this paper, capacity evaluation of multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) Multi-Carrier(MC)/CDMA system is considered to mitigate multiple access interference, partial-band interference and enhance system channel capacity in wireless channel. Recently, to increase the spectrum efficiency and the link reliability, MIMO-MC/CDMA scheme is devised to exploit multi-path in a scattering wireless channel. In particular, the channel capacity of MIMO-MC/CDMA system is evaluated according to Eb/No. Mc, p and B. From the results, in order to inappropriate spacing and the signals are frequency overlapped by partial band interference, the channel capacity of MIMO-MC/CDMA system becomes substantially smaller.

  • In this paper, we propose coordinated scheduling and beamforming based on limited feedback to overcome the effects of inter-cell interference in multi-cell environment. The goal of this study is to improve a performance of cell-edge area significantly affected by the inter-cell interference and also to guarantee a performance of the entire system. Existing coordinated scheduling and beamforming based on the perfect channel state information generates an overhead for the channel state information feedback and exchange at the users and base stations, respectively. In this study, first we propose a novel codebook to obtain a null space of an interference channel efficiently which can be used to reduce the inter-cell interference. Using the proposed codebook, we propose coordinated scheduling and beamforming to improve the performance of cell-edge area and the entire system. Through the proportional fair scheduling, the performance of the proposed technique is shown as improvement of channel capacity for users located cell-edge area and entire system.

  • Recently, the digital television transition from analog television to digital television has been progressing in terrestrial broadcasting. As a result of the DTV transition, additional reassignments and deployments of TV White spaces (TVWS) caused by co-channel interference (CCI) were needed. In this paper, we investigate the TVWS caused by CCI using Longley-Rice and ITU-R P.1546 propagation model, which are the most widely-used propagation model. In addition, we analyze the service coverage radius and CCI radius according to the height of transmitter antenna and transmitting power. The results show that the ratios of CCI radius to service coverage radius in Longley-Rice and ITU-R P.1546 propagation model are about 2.54 and 2.07, respectively.

  • In this paper, we propose maximum likelihood (ML) decision feedback channel estimation (DFCE) for M-ary orthogonal modulation in direct sequence/code division multiple access (DS/CDMA) systems. The proposed DFCE uses the maximum combiner output in a RAKE receiver as decision feedback information, enabling M-ary orthogonal signals to be demodulated coherently and a RAKE receiver to use a em maximal ration combining (MRC) scheme. However, the performance of the proposed DFCE in the multiuser environment is severely degraded due to multiple access interference (MAI). To overcome this problem, a multistage parallel interference cancellation (PIC) scheme is combined with the proposed DFCE for multiuser environments. Accurate knowledge of the channel coefficient estimated by the proposed DFCE is used to regenerate the signal of each user for the multistage PIC scheme. According to the results of our simulations, the performance of coherent demodulation using the proposed system is significantly improved in comparison with conventional noncoherent demodulation.

  • In IEEE 802.11p/1609-based vehicular networks, vehicles are allowed to exchange safety and control messages only within time periods, called control channel (CCH) interval, which are scheduled periodically. Currently, the length of the CCH interval is set to the fixed value (i.e. 50ms). However, the fixed-length intervals cannot be effective for dynamically changing traffic load. Hence, some protocols have been recently proposed to support variable-length CCH intervals in order to improve channel utilization. In existing protocols, the CCH interval is subdivided into safety and non-safety intervals, and the length of each interval is dynamically adjusted to accommodate the estimated traffic load. However, they do not consider the presence of hidden nodes. Consequently, messages transmitted in each interval are likely to overlap with simultaneous transmissions (i.e. interference) from hidden nodes. Particularly, life-critical safety messages which are exchanged within the safety interval can be unreliably delivered due to such interference, which deteriorates QoS of safety applications such as cooperative collision warning. In this paper, we therefore propose a new interference-aware Dynamic Safety Interval (DSI) protocol. DSI calculates the number of vehicles sharing the channel with the consideration of hidden nodes. The safety interval is derived based on the measured number of vehicles. From simulation study using the ns-2, we verified that DSI outperforms the existing protocols in terms of various metrics such as broadcast delivery ration, collision probability and safety message delay.

  • In this paper, we propose the structures of the NBTC (Narrow-Beam Trisector Cell) and the WBTC(Wide-Beam Trisector Cell) in which directional antennas both at the base station and at the relay station are used. We analyze and compare total capacity of the both systems taking the co-channel interference into consideration for two channel models. Through analysis, we find the effect of LOS (Lind of Sight) path to the total capacity of NBTC structure and that of WBTC structure. Our work may be useful as a guideline to control the interference for the next generation mobile communication and WiBro systems using multi-hop relays.

  • The massive MIMO system, which is a core technology of 5G communication systems, has a problem that it is difficult to implement in a frequency division duplex system based on limited channel feedback because a large amount of channel information is required at the transmitting end. In order to solve this problem, the Joint Spatial Division and Multiplexing (JSDM) technique that dramatically reduces the channel information requirement by removing interference between the user groups using channel correlation information that does not change for a long time has been proposed. Recently, a regularized JSDM technique has been proposed to further improve performance by allowing residual interference between the user groups. However, such JSDM-related studies were mainly designed to focus on inter-group interference cancellation, and thus performance analysis was not performed in a more realistic environment assuming limited feedback in the intra-group interference cancellation phase. In this paper, we analyze the performance of the JSDM and regularized JSDM techniques according to the number of groups and users in a limited feedback environment, and through the simulation results, demonstrate that the regularized JSDM technique shows a more remarkable advantage compared to the existing JSDM in a limited feedback environments.

  • In this paper, a frame transmission method to make IEEE 802.15.4 nodes run at a new channel and its characteristics are studied when they experience difficulties in transmission of frames due to WiFi traffic. The researches on evaluating the interference from WiFi traffic, searching for a new channel with little interference or not, and changing the operating channel are analyzed. In an wireless channel overlapped with IEEE 802.11 network, the transmission delay of IEEE 802.15.4 frames, the collision of frames in sending IEEE 802.15.4 frames without applying CSMA-CA algorithm, and the operation of IEEE 802.11 nodes are explained. A transmission method of frames including frame-formated code blocks in order to use the rest part of collided IEEE 802.15.4 frame is proposed. In the experiments of the proposed method, it is observed that frame-formated code blocks are synchronized and received by receivers in case of collision, and then the collided positions in IEEE 802.15.4 frame and the characteristics of frame reception rate are analyzed. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is improved in comparison to an existing method when we measure the time taken to send a channel change command and get the response in order to avoid the interference from WiFi traffic.
