  • In this paper, an iterative subspace-based calibration algorithm for a CDMA-based antenna array in the presence of unknown gain and phase error is presented. The algorithm does not depend on the array geometry and does not require a prior knowledge of the Directions Of Arrival (DOA) of the signals. The method requires the code sequence of a reference user only. The proposed algorithm is based on the subspace method and root finding approach, and it provides estimates of the calibration vector, the DOA and the channel impulse response, by using the code sequence of a reference user. The performance of the proposed algorithm was investigated by means of computer simulations and was verified using field data measured through a custom-built W-CDMA test-bed. The data show that experimental results match well with the theoretical calibration algorithm. Also, teh study propose an efficient algorithm using the simulated annealing technique. This algorithm overcomes the requirement of initial guessing in the subspace-based approach.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for designing a class of M-channel, causal, stable, perfect reconstruction, infinite impulse response (IIR), and parallel uniform discrete Fourier transform (DFT) filter banks. It is based on a previously proposed structure by Martinez et al. [1] for IIR digital filter design for sampling rate reduction. The proposed filter bank has a modular structure and is therefore very well suited for VLSI implementation. Moreover, the current structure is more efficient in terms of computational complexity than the most general IIR DFT filter bank, and this results in a reduced computational complexity by more than 50% in both the critically sampled and oversampled cases. In the polyphase oversampled DFT filter bank case, we get flexible stop-band attenuation, which is also taken care of in the proposed algorithm.

  • This paper describes a design of RAKE receiver for the cellular CDMA mobile communication system on the multipath fading channel. To measure impulse response on the multipath fading environment. partial correlation properties of short PN code that transmitted at a cell site through the pilot channel was used. We used 12 despread paths for compensating about 10 s multipath spread and proposed the compensation algorithm. For processing of digital converted input signal, we proposed full digitalized logics and its validity was verified by computer and timing simulation.

  • In this paper, a decision feedback recurrent neural equalization (DFRNE) scheme is proposed for adaptive equalization problems. The proposed equalizer models a nonlinear infinite impulse response (IIR) filter. The modified Real-Time recurrent Learning Algorithm (RTRL) is used to train the DFRNE. The DFRNE is applied to both linear channels with only intersymbol interference and nonlinear channels for digital video cassette recording (DVCR) system. And the performance of the DFRNE is compared to those of the conventional equalizaion schemes, such as a linear equalizer, a decision feedback equalizer, and neural equalizers based on multi-layer perceptron (MLP), in view of both bit error rate performance and mean squared error (MSE) convergence. It is shown that the DFRNE with a reasonable size not only gives improvement of compensating for the channel introduced distortions, but also makes the MSE converge fast and stable.

  • Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation can severely weaken the accuracy of ranging and localization in wireless location systems. NLOS bias mitigation techniques have recently been proposed to relieve the NLOS effects, but positively rely on the capability to accurately distinguish between LOS and NLOS propagation scenarios. This paper proposes an energy-capture-based NLOS identification method for LDR-UWB systems, based on the analysis of the characteristics of the channel impulse response (CIR). With this proposed energy capture method, the probability of successfully identifying NLOS is much improved than the existing methods, such as the kurtosis method, the strongest path compare method, etc. This NLOS identification method can be employed in adaptive modulation scheme to decrease bit error ratio (BER) level for certain signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The BER performance with the adaptive modulation can be significantly enhanced by selecting proper modulation method with the knowledge of channel information from the proposed NLOS identification method.

  • This paper introduces a fine timing synchronization based on reference signals. The proposed method first estimates a channel impulse response (CIR), and acquires the timing offset based on the change point of statistics of the estimated CIR. It is confirmed that the proposed estimator can significantly improve the fine timing synchronization performance compared to conventional schemes over diverse channel environments.

  • In this paper, to counteract a cross-polarization interference caused by co-channel dual polarization technique of digital radio relay system(DRRS), we analyze the theoretical model and digital design of cross-polarization interference canceller(XPIC). In addition a complex adaptive time domain equalizer(ATDE) is designed using a finite impulse response filter, and the structure of XPIC and its control method are also illustrated including ATDE. Our computer simulation shows that about 25 dB signature and more than 23 dB XPIC improvement factor can be obtained with XPIC and ATDE. In order to verify the operation of designed XPIC, we review the simulated results in view of tap number, algorithm convergence, system signature, and XPlC improvement factor in connection with 64-QAM DRRS with co-channel dual polarization.

  • Communication environments in the context of underwater channel are characterized to be bad by the characteristics of multipath. Multipaths are affected by various factors e.g. the temperature and the salinity of the ocean. In this paper, the representative sound speed profiles were calculated in the southern part of Baengnyeoung island so that the eigen-ray paths with the channel impulse responses were determined using the average sound speed profile of last decade. The performance of underwater communication was analyzed using the BPSK modulation and time reversal method. The significant differences of results were shown according to the change of season and carrier frequency by using computer simulation. In addition, improved performance is obtained using preprocess channel impulse response for the better comparison of two cases of summer and autumn.

  • In this paper, we present an adaptive modulation technique for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for broadband wireless communications. Also, using improved channel prediction, we enhance the performance of adaptive OFDM in high mobility environments. Adaptive modulation technique has been shown to achieve reliable high-rate data transmission over frequency-selective fading channel when OFDM is employed. This scheme requires the accurate channel information between two stations for a better performance. In an outdoor high mobility environment, most of adaptive OFDM systems have to be given the channel information transmitted from the receiver. Even if it is possible, there is some delay. Moreover, the channel impulse response between two stations is very rapidly varied. If the channel information is obsolete at the time of transmission, then poor system performance will result. In order to solve this problem, we propose adaptive OFDM with improved channel predictor. The proposed bit allocation algorithm has a lower complexity and the proposed scheme mitigates the effect of channel delay. Robust approach is less sensitive to outdated channel information. Performance results show that the proposed scheme can achieve considerable performance enhancement.

  • Identification of communication channels is a problem of important current theoretical and practical concerns. Recently proposed solutions for this problem exploit the diversity induced by antenna array or time oversampling. The method resorts to an adaptive filter with a linear constraint. In this paper, an approach is proposed that is based on decomposition. Indeed, the eigenvector corresponding to the minimum eigenvalue of the covariance matrix of the received signals contains the channel impulse response. And we present an adaptive algorithm to solve this problem. Proposed technique shows the better performance than one of existing algorithms.
