In this study, turbulent flows in a grooved channel are numerically investigated by Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Especially, a parametric study is carried out to study effects of length and depth of a groove on large-scale flow structures. For one test case, comparison of LES results with those of DNS reveals a good agreement even though the number of grid points of LES is only 6.5% of that of DNS. This confirms that LES is a suitable tool for a parametric study of turbulent flows. The subsequent parametric study using LES shows that the large-scale turbulent structures are significantly affected by the geometry of the groove. Especially, when the length of the groove is short such that the recirculation region occupies the entire groove, the turbulent flow in the groove becomes very weak in both mean and fluctuation quantities.

The pseudospectral method for stability analysis was used to find the most influential disturbance mode for transition of plane channel flows and Blasius flow at their critical Reynolds numbers. A number of various oblique disturbance waves were investigated for their pseudospectra and resolvent norm contours in each flow, and an exhaustive search method was employed to find the disturbing waves to which the flows become most unstable. In plane Poiseuille flow an oblique disturbance with a wavelength of 3.59h (where h is the half channel width) at an angle $28.7^{\circ}$ was found to be the most influential for the flow transition to turbulence, and in plane Couette flow it is an oblique wave with a wavelength of 3.49h at an angle of $19.4^{\circ}$. But in Blasius flow it was found that the most influential mode is a normal wave with a wavelength of $3.44{\delta}_{999}$. These results imply that the most influential disturbance mode is closely related to the fundamental acoustic wave with a certain shear sheltering in the respective flow geometry.

The drag reduction phenomenon with an additives of surfactant(STAC, stearlytrimethyl ammonium chloride) and polymer(PEO, polyethlene oxide) was investigated in fully developed turbulent pipe and channel flows at various low Reynolds numbers as well as very low additives concentration. A maximum of 70% drag reduction compared with plain water flow was found. This maximum drag reduction percentage obtained with surfactant solution was slightly higher than that of the Virk's asymptote in polymer solution.
This paper shows a technique for regulating the rate emitted by UWB mobile terminals. This technique is designed to adapt the emission rate to the effects of channel capacity variations. We assume that individual flows are shaped at edge routers by means of dual leaky buckets. The proposal is based on the evaluation of certain parameters, which reflect the channel status, sent to the application layer. This information is generated by the scheduler designed to guarantee appropriate channel sharing for the various traffic components. We describe some results which highlight how performance depends on the specific operating conditions, as well as on the traffic descriptors of the flows, their reciprocal difference, and performance requirements.

The one-dimensional (1D) finite-difference method (FDM) with Abbott-Ionescu scheme and the two-dimensional (2D) finite-volume method (FVM) with an approximate Riemann solver (Osher scheme) for unsteady flow calculation in river are described. The two models have been applied to several problems including flow in a straight channel, flow in a slightly meandering channel and a flow in a meandering channel. The uniform rectangular channel was employed for the purpose of comparing results. A comparison is made between the results of computation on 1D and 2D flows including straight channel, slightly meandering channel and meandering channel application. The implementation of the finite-volume method allows complex boundary geometry represented. Agreement between FVM and FDM results regarding the discharge and stage is considered very satisfactory in straight channel application. It was concluded that a 1D analysis is sufficient if the channel is prismatic and remains straight. For curved (meandering) channels, a 2D or 3D model must be used in order to model the flow accurately.

This paper deals with the problem of unfairness among uplink TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) flows associated with frame aggregation employed in IEEE 802.11n WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks). When multiple stations have uplink TCP flows and transmit TCP data packets to an AP (Access Point), the AP has to compete for channel access with stations for the transmission of TCP ACK (acknowledgement) packets to the stations. Due to this contention-based channel access, TCP ACKs tend to be accumulated in the AP's downlink buffer. We show that the frame aggregation in the MAC (Medium Access Control) layer increases TCP ACK losses in the AP and leads to the serious unfair operation of TCP congestion control. To resolve this problem, we propose the TAC (TCP ACK Compression) mechanism operating at the top of the AP's interface queue. By exploiting the properties of cumulative TCP ACK and frame aggregation, TAC serves only the representative TCP ACK without serving redundant TCP ACKs. Therefore, TAC reduces queue occupancy and prevents ACK losses due to buffer overflow, which significantly contributes to fairness among uplink TCP flows. Also, TAC enhances the channel efficiency by not transmitting unnecessary TCP ACKs. The simulation results show that TAC tightly assures fairness under various network conditions while increasing the aggregate throughput, compared to the existing schemes.

Most of the energy efficient MAC protocols for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are based on duty cycling in a single channel and show competitive performances in a small number of traffic flows; however, under concurrent multiple flows, they result in significant performance degradation due to contention and collision. We propose a multi-channel pipelining (MCP) method for convergecast WSN in order to address these problems. In MCP, a staggered dynamic phase shift (SDPS) algorithms devised to minimize end-to-end latency by dynamically staggering wake-up schedule of nodes on a multi-hop path. Also, a phase-locking identification (PLI) algorithm is proposed to optimize energy efficiency. Based on these algorithms, multiple flows can be dynamically pipelined in one of multiple channels and successively handled by sink switched to each channel. We present an analytical model to compute the duty cycle and the latency of MCP and validate the model by simulation. Simulation evaluation shows that our proposal is superior to existing protocols: X-MAC and DPS-MAC in terms of duty cycle, end-to-end latency, delivery ratio, and aggregate throughput.
In micro- and nanoflows, the Boltzmann distribution is valid only when the electric double layers (EDL's) are not overlapped and the ionic distributions establish an equilibrium state. The present study has numerically investigated unsteady two-dimensional fully-developed electroosmotic flows between two parallel flat plates in the nonoverlapped and overlapped EDL cases, without any assumption of the Boltzmann distribution. For the study, two kinds of unsteady flows are considered: one is the impulsive application of a constant electric field and the other is the application of a sinusoidally oscillating electric field. For the numerical simulations, the ionic-species and electric-field equations as well as the continuity and momentum ones are solved. Numerical simulations are successful in accurately predicting unsteady electroosmotic flows and ionic distributions. Results show that the nonoverlapped and overlapped cases are totally different in their basic characteristics. This study would contribute to further understanding unsteady electroosmotic flows in micro- and nanofluidic devices.

A kinetic theory analysis is made of low-speed gas flows in a microfluidic system consisted of three microchannels in series. The Boitzmann equation simplified by a collision model is solved by means of a finite difference approximation with the discrete ordinate method. For the evaluation of the present method results are compared with those from the DSMC method and an analytical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions. Calculations are made for flows at various Knudsen numbers and pressure ratios across the channel. The results compared well with those from the DSMC method. It is shown that the analytical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions which is suited fur fully developed flows can give relatively good results. In predicting the geometrically complex flows up to a Knudsen number of about 0.06. It is also shown that the present method can be used to analyze extremely low-speed flow fields for which the DSMC method is Impractical.
