  • In this paper, we propose an efficient superposition coding multiplexing(SCM) method based on power allocation in descending order for fading broadcast channels in which per-user minimum and maximum rate constraints are considered in order to maximize the transmission effectiveness. It consists of three steps as follows. In the first step, a user group is selected to maximize the number of users with whom a transmitter can communicate instantaneously. In the second step, per-user power allocation for each user is done in descending order of transmit power by determining a maximum allowable interference power from all subsequent interfering users in order to guarantee its corresponding minimum rate, and then a residual power is calculated. The final step is performed if some power remains even after the second step. In this step, additional power allocation is performed up to the maximum transmit power to provide the maximum rate to the corresponding user, again in ascending order, starting from the last user in descending order. But, this method does not require power reallocation to subsequent users because tentative power allocation in the second step has been performed in descending order to guarantee the minimum rate for each user, taking into account the maximum allowable interference power from all the subsequent users. Therefore, the proposed method gets more efficient in term of computational complexity when per-user minimum as well as maximum rate constraints exist, especially as the number of users increases.

  • The Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) standard was proposed by the International Standardization Organization (ISO/SC 29/WG 10) and the CCITT SG VIII as an international standard for digital continuous-tone still image compression. The JPEG standard has been widely accepted in electronic imaging, computer graphics, and multi-media applications, however, due to the lossy character of the JPEG compression its application in the field of medical imaging has been limited. In this paper, the JPEG standard was applied to a series of head sections of magnetic resonance (MR) images (256 gray levels, $256{\times}256$ size) and its performance was investigated. For this purpose, DCT-based sequential mode of the JPEG standard was implemented using the CL550 compression chip and progressive and lossless coding was implemented by software without additional hardware. From the experiment, it appears that the compression ratio of about 10 to 20 was obtained for the MR images without noticeable distortion. It is also noted that the error signal between the reconstructed image by the JPEG and the original image was nearly random noise without causing any special-pattern-related artifact. Although the coding efficiency of the progressive and hierarchical coding is identical to that of the sequential coding in compression ratio and SNR, it has useful features In fast search of patient Image from huge image data base and in remote diagnosis through slow public communication channel.

  • Differential unitary space-time modulation (DUSTM) has emerged as a promising technique to obtain spatial diversity without intractable channel estimation. This paper presents a study of the application of DUSTM on multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems with frequency-selective fading channels. From the view of a correlation analysis between subcarriers of OFDM, we obtain the maximum achievable diversity of DUSTM on MIMO-OFDM systems. Moreover, an efficient implementation strategy based on subcarrier reconstruction is proposed, which transmits all the signals of one signal matrix in one OFDM transmission and performs differential processing between two adjacent OFDM blocks. The proposed method is capable of obtaining both spatial and multipath diversity while reducing the effect of time variation of channels to a minimum. The performance improvement is confirmed by simulation results.

  • The present study examined the effectiveness and communications functions of mothers' touch on the responses of their 6-month-old infants using the Still-Face (SF) situation. Participants were 67 infant-mother dyads from Seoul and Gyeonggi province. Positive and negative responses of infants were measured by SF interactions and by three different touch conditions. Touch types were measured by a coding scheme based on Suchung Kim and Keumjoo Kwak (2003; 2(04). Results showed that mothers' touch affected baby's responses by increasing positive responses and decreasing negative responses. The positive and negative responses of infants differed by the three different touch conditions, indicating that mothers use different touch types according to touch conditions; these variations in touch function as an important channel of communications.

  • 본 논문에서는 차세대 무선 통신 시스템에 적용이 가능한 새로운 FEC(Forward Error Correction) 부호화 방법으로 MLC(Multi-Level Convolutional) 부호화 방식을 제안한다.

  • The Multi-Code CDMA systems that are proposed as an effective transmission methodology in the IMT-2000 systems allow higher rate services under the IS-95 CDMA infrastructure. The Multi-Code CDMA systems convert the higher rate data into the lower rate by serial to parallel operation and spread the converted data streams by the multiple walsh codes, and its mobile receiver needs multiple walsh generators and data correlators to demodulate simultaneously multiple walsh code channels. Therefore, the number of data correlators is increased as the number of traffic channels increases. In this paper, we proposed the new structure of the data correlators using walsh overlay coding, the shared accumulator, and FWHT(Fast Walsh Hadamard Transform) algorithm for reducing the bottle-neck effect resulting the increase of the number of data correlators.

  • In this paper. we analyzed the performance of a SFH (slow frequency hopping) system under partial-band jamming, multiple access interference and wide-band random noise. For the correction of burst errors due to channel hit, Reed-Solomon coding followed by block interleaving is employed. Errors-and-erasures decoding with side information is exploited to enhance the correctional capability. We derived a closed-form solution for the BER estimation. Errors resulting from random noise and erasures resulting from burst interference are separately analyzed and finally BER is computed due to these composite noise sources. Estimated BER performance is verified by computer simulation.

  • Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) are becoming increasingly important to solve the issue of health care. IEEE 802.15.6 is a wireless communication standard for WBANs, aiming to provide a real-time and continuous monitoring. In this paper, we present our development of a modified Markov Chain model and a backoff model, in which most features such as user priorities, contention windows, modulation and coding schemes (MCSs), and frozen states are taken into account. Then we calculate the normalized throughput and average access delay of IEEE 802.15.6 networks under saturation and ideal channel conditions. We make an evaluation of network performances by comparing with IEEE 802.15.4 and the results validate that IEEE 802.15.6 networks can provide high quality of service (QoS) for nodes with high priorities.
