Polar Code was proposed by Turkish professor Erdal Arikan in 2006 as an idea that splitted input channel is increasing the cutoff rate. The channel polarization consisted of code sequences with symmetric high rate capacity in a given B-DMC(Binary-input Discrete Memoryless Channel) W. The symmetric capacity is the highest rate achievable subject to using the input letters of the channel with equal probability. The channel polarization is said to a set of given N independent outputs of B-DMC W. In other word, N increases when N is a set of binary-input channels {$W^{(i)}_N\;:\;1{\leq}\;i\;{\leq}\;N$}, in I{WN(i)} as the fraction of indices is near to 1, which is approaching to I(W), and it is near to 0, then to 1-I(W), where I(W) presents high rates in reliable wireless communication channel as inputs of W with equal frequences. After all, {WN(i)} is shown to be a state of channel coding. On the based on this Polar codes, this paper analyzes Polar coding and decoding of Arikan and propose Radix4 Polar coding newly.

In this paper, we propose an improved distributed multi-view video coding method that is robust to illumination changes among different views. The use of view dependency is not effective for multi-view video because each view has different intrinsic and extrinsic camera parameters. In this paper, a modified distributed multi-view coding method is presented that applies illumination compensation when generating side information. The proposed encoder codes DC values of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients separately by entropy coding. The proposed decoder can generate more accurate side information by using the transmitted DC coefficients to compensate for illumination changes. Furthermore, AC coefficients are coded with conventional entropy or channel coders depending on the frequency band. We found that the proposed algorithm is about 0.1~0.5 dB better than conventional algorithms.
In the communications systems with diversity, we are commonly faced on needing of new source coding technique, error resilient coding. The error resilient coding addresses the coding algorithm that has the robustness to unreliability of communications channel. In recent years, many error resilient coding techniques were proposed such as data partitioning, resynchronization, error detection, concealment, reference picture selection and multiple description coding (MDC). In this paper, we proposed an MDC using whitening transform. The conventional MDC using correlating transform is need additional information to decode the image. But, if an image is transformed using the whitening transform, the additional information is not necessary to transform because the coefficients of whitening transform have uni-variance statistics.

This paper is the research about a joint coding system of source and channel coding using VF(Variable-to-fixed length) arithmetic code and BCH code. We propose a VF arithmetic coding method with EDC( Error Detecting Capability) and a joint coding method in that the VF arithmetic coding method with EDC is combined with BCH code. By combining both the VF arithmetic code with EDC and BCH code. the proposed joint coding method corrects a source codeword with t-errors in decoding of BCH code and carries out a improvement of the EDC of a codeword with more than (t+1)-errors in decoding of the VF arithmetic coding with EDC. We examine the performance of the proposed method in terms of compression ratio and EDC.
Communication systems, including cell-based mobile communication systems, multiple satellite communication systems of multi-beam satellite systems, require reliable handoff methods between cell-to-cell, satellite-to-satellite of beam-to-team, respectively. Recent measurement of a CDMA cellular system indicates that the system is in handoff at about 35% to 70% of an average call period. Therefore, system reliability during handoff is one of the major system performance parameters and eventually becomes a factor in the overall system capacity. This paper presents novel and improved techniques for handoff in cellular communications, multi-beam and multi-satellite systems that require handoff during a session. this new handoff system combines the soft handoff mechanism currently implemented in the IS-95 CDMA with code and packet diversity combining techniques and an iterative decoding algorithm (Turbo Coding). the Turbo code introduced by Berrou et all. has been demonstrated its remarkable performance achieving the near Shannon channel capacity [1]. Recently. Turbo codes have been adapted as the coding scheme for the data transmission of the third generation international cellular communication standards : UTRA and CDMA 2000. Our proposed encoder and decoder schemes modified from the original Turbo code is suitable for the code and packet diversity combining techniques. this proposed system provides not only an unprecedented coding gain from the Turbo code and it iterative decoding, but also gain induced by the code and packet diversity combining technique which is similar to the hybrid Type II ARQ. We demonstrate performance improvements in AWGN channel and Rayleigh fading channel with perfect channel state information (CSI) through simulations for at low signal to noise ratio and analysis using exact upper bounding techniques for medium to high signal to noise ratio.

In the B-ISDN using satellite between geo-satellites and earth stations, the laser having high security and broad band width has to be used as a carrier for transmitting massive information of visual, vocal, and high rate data. In this paper, by computer simulation we analyzed the number of optical detector array of optical satellite communication downlink in case of using channel coding and no channel coding for BISDN between geo-satelites and earth stations under clear weather condition. It was supposed that 1 watt semiconductor laser was used and as modulation method, the binary FSK was used. The data rate of 10Gbps was used for B-ISDN. Also, hardly affected by atmospheric absorption 1.55$\mu$m wave-length was used to reduce influence of dispersion and chirp generated at a high speed transmission. We analyzed the received power, SNR and BER. The number of optical detector array was determined to satisfy for the BER less than 10$^{-7}$. Also, we ananlyzed the possibility of reducting the number of optical detector array in case of using channel coding. the number of optical detector array is one in the region where the elevation nangle is between 38$^{\circ}$ and 90$^{\circ}$ and two where the elevation angle is between 33$^{\circ}$ and 37$^{\circ}$ and three where the elevation angle is between 30$^{\circ}$ and 32$^{\circ}$ and increases per one as the elevation angle decreases per 1.deg.. So in the region where the elevation angle is 25$^{\circ}$, the number of optical detector arrays is eight. In case of using channel coding, the number of optical detector arrays decreases to five in the region where the elevation angle is 25$^{\circ}$. Therefore, we remaark the advantage of the channelcoding to decrease the size of received antenna and the number ob optical detector arrays.
Underwater acoustic communication has multipath error because of reflection by sea-level and sea-bottom. The multipath of underwater channel causes signal distortion and error floor. In order to improve the performance, it is necessary to employ an iterative coding scheme. Among the iterative coding scheme, turbo codes, LDPC codes and convolutional code based on BCJR algorithm are dominant channel coding schemes in recent. Therefore this paper analyzed the performance of iterative codes based on turbo equalizer with the same coding rate and similar codeword length. The performances of three kinds of iterative codes were evaluated in the environment of underwater acoustic communication channel that are real data collected in Korean east sea. The distance of transmitter and receiver was 5Km and data rate was 1Kbps. As a result, convolutional code based on BCJR algorithm has better performance in underwater channel than turbo codes and LDPC codes.

Space-time coding was designed for an efficient transmit diversity technique to improve performance of wireless communication. For the transmit diversity using space-time coding, the receiver requires to estimate channel parameters corresponding to each transmit antennas. In this paper, we propose an efficient channel estimation scheme based on trigonometric polynomial approximation in OFDM systems with transmit diversity using space-time coding. The proposed scheme is more efficient than the conventional scheme in terms of the computational complexity. For QAM modulation, when the size of FFH is 128, the conventional scheme with significant tap caching of 7 requires 9852 complex multiplications for TU, HT and BU channels. But the proposed scheme requires 2560, 7680 and 3584 complex multiplications for TU, HT and BU channels, respectively. Especially, for channels with smaller Doppler frequency and delay spreads, the proposed scheme has the improved BER performance and complexity. In addition, we evaluate the performance of maximum delay spread estimation in unknown channel. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated by computer simulation in various multi-path fading environments.

This paper addresses the effect of group delay in satellite communication system. Phase of signal is distorted by the non-constant group delay. Group delay can be modeled as linear, parabolic and cubic type according to the polynomial characteristic. We investigate BER performance of satellite communication system with each 3 kinds of group delay. As signal bandwidth becomes wider, group delay makes more influence on the signal. BNR performance of satellite communication system is found when data rates are 1Mbps, 4Mbps and 8Mbps. Convolution coding with the code rate of 1/2 or 7/8 is used. At BER =10$\^$-5/, system with group delay needs more SNR of minimum 0.3㏈ to maximum 4.4㏈ than system without group delay. The worst case of BER performance happens in the linear group delay, 7/8 punctured convolution coding and 8 Mbps. The required SNR is increased by 4.4㏈ at this worst case.

In downlink of mobile communication systems, the feedback delay between channel estimation and actual transmission causes inaccuracy in channel-state-information (CSI) and this results in performance degradation. In order to overcome this phenomenon, channel prediction is inevitable. In this paper, an adaptive transmission scheme based on channel prediction is proposed and its performance is evaluated. From simulation results, it is shown that the performance degradation due to the feedback delay is successfully mitigated by using the proposed scheme.
