This paper proposes a new quantitative and objective image quality metric which is essential to verify the performance of block-based DCT image coding The proposed metric considers not only global distortion of coded image such as spatial frequency sensitivity and channel masking using HVS based multi-channel model, but also structural distortions caused block-based coding. The experimental results show a strong correlation between propose(B metric and subjective metric.
Unequal Error Protection(UP) is reasonable scheme in transmission of compressed video with low bit rate. Because it offers the error correction ability each other data according to the Source Significance Information. Hence it can also be flexible to the given channel environment on the video transmission. This paper propose the joint source channel coding through the UEP in consideration of the hierarchical structure of H.263+ based video and the influence of the transmission error. It especially proposes the error-resilient video transmission technique which can reduce complexity of channel coder & decoder by partitioning the video data with a frame. As the result of the proposed algorithm, it is possible to increase the quality of reconstructed video in the error environment without creating additional bits.
A practical method of adaptive rate allocation to source and channel codings for an independent loss channel is proposed for Internet video. It is based on the observations that the values of residual loss probabilities at the optimal code rates for different packet loss probabilities are closely clustered to the average residual loss probability for a transmission frame size n in RS(n,k) code and for a total bit rate R. These observations aye then exploited to find the code rate for maximum PSNR. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a near-optimal bit-rate allocation in the joint source-channel coding of H.263 and RS(n,k) codings.
Most existing space-time coding (STC) schemes have been developed for flat fading channels. To obtain antenna diversity gain, they rely on channel state information (CSI) required at the receiver through channel estimation techniques. This paper proposes a new decision feedback decoding scheme for Alamouti-based space-time block coding (STBC) transmission over time-selective fading channels. In wireless channels, time-selective fading effects arise mainly due to Doppler shift and carrier frequency offset, Modelling the time-selective fading channels as the first-order Gauss-Markov processes, we use recursive algorithms such as Kalman filtering, LMS and RLS algorithms for channel tracking. The proposed scheme consists of the symbol decoding stage and channel tracking algorithms. Computer simulations confirm that the proposed scheme shows the better performance and robustness to time-selectivity.
High-capacity, high quality services should be guaranteed in mobile communication environment. Excellent channel coding and compensation techniques are required so as to improve data reliability on fading channels. In this paper, we propose a method using double pilots, estimates and compensates for the fading of information symbols. The proposed method using Log-MAP Turbo decoder through the iterative decoder, improves BER performance under the environment of the frequency selective fading channel. Compared to the existing methods, the suggested methods show functional improvement of approximately 3dB in case that the number of iteration decoding is 5 and BER is $10^{-4}$.
In this paper, performance of a double binary turbo coded ultra wide band (UWB) system is analyzed and simulated in an indoor wireless channel. Binary pulse position modulation-time hopping (BPPM-TH) signals are considered. The indoor wireless channel is modeled as a modified Saleh and Valenzuela (SV) channel. The performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability (BER). From the simulation results, it is seen that double binary turbo coding offers considerable coding gain with reasonable encoding complexity. It is also demonstrated that the performance of the UWB system can be substantially improved by increasing the number of iterations.
A key requirement for packet based wireless communication systems is to provide a high data rate packet service and improved throughput. To achieve a high throughput, adaptive methods for adjustment of the modulation and coding can be used. In this paper, we propose and analyze a scheme which is a combination of an adaptive modulation and coding(AMC) and transmit diversity(TD). Two different TD schemes are analysed: STTD and STD. Proposed system provides significant improvement in the average throughput.
In transmission of image sequences over ATM networks, the packet loss problem and channel sharing efficiency are important. As a possible solution two-layer video coding methods have been proposed. These methods transmit video information over the network with different levels of protection with respect to packets loss. In this paper, a two-layer coding method using pyramid structure is proposed and several realizations of two-layer video coding methods are presented and their performances are compared.

Cooperative communications and network coding schemes have been proposed to increase system throughput for ad hoc networks. In this paper, we present throughput and delay analysis of the new network coding-enabled cooperative MAC protocol called NC-MAC, which has been proposed by us in order to significantly enhance system performance. This protocol introduces an approach that can accommodate both cooperative communication and network coding for wireless ad hoc networks by slightly increasing overhead and modifying standards. The protocol's performance is evaluated using mathematical analysis and computer simulation and two performance measures, system throughput and average channel access delay, are used for a performance comparison with previous schemes. It is assumed that all the frames exchanged over a wireless channel are susceptible to transmission errors, which is a new but more reasonable assumption differentiating this research from previous research. Numerical results show this protocol provides significantly enhanced system performance compared with conventional cooperative MAC protocols used in previous research. For instance, system performance is 47% higher using the NC-MAC protocol than when using the rDCF protocol.
