Theoretical Analysis of Fast Gain-Transient Recovery of EDFAs Adopting a Disturbance Observer with PiD Controller in WDM Network

  • We have proposed an application of disturbance observer with PID controller to minimize gain-transient time of wavelength-division-multiplexing(WDM) multi channels in optical amplifier in channel add/drop networks. We have dramatically reduced the gain-transient time to less than $3{\mu}sec$ by applying a disturbance observer with a proportional/integral/ differential(PID) controller to the control of amplifier gain. The theoretical analysis on the 3-level erbium-doped fiber laser and the disturbance observer technique is demonstrated by performing the simulation with co-simulation of the $MATLAB^{TM}$ and a numerical modeling software package such as the $Optsim^{TM}$.

  • We propose a new technique to minimize gain-transient time of wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) signals in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) in channel add/drop networks. We have dramatically reduced the gain-transient time to less than $3{\mu}sec$ by applying, for the first time to our knowledge, a disturbance observer with a proportional/integral/differential (PID) controller to the control of EDFA gain. The $3{\mu}sec$ gain-transient time is the fastest one ever reported and it is approximately less than 1.5% of $200{\mu}sec$ gain-transient time of commercially available EDFAs for WDM networks. We have demonstrated the superiority of the new technique by performing the simulation with a numerical modeling software package such as the $Optsim^{TM}$.

  • 채널 레벨 컨트롤러는 DWDM(Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) 방식의 OXC(Optical Cross Connect), OADM(Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer), 광 증폭기(EDFA : Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier) 둥의 시스템에서 채널별 광신호의 세기를 조절하여 시스템의 신뢰성을 높이는 중요한 제어기다. 본 논문에서는 12채널 VOA(Variable Optical Attenuator) 4개를 사용하여 40채널의 광 신호 레벨을 제어할 수 있는 컨트롤러를 구현하였다. 각 채널의 광 신호 레벨을 제어하는데 하나의 마이크로 프로세서가 5개의 채널을 제어하고 총 8개의 마이크로프로세서로 40채널을 분산 제어하도록 구성하였다. 또한 외부와 통신을 하고 사용자로부터의 명령을 각각의 마이크로프로세서에 전달하기 위한 마이크로프로세서를 추가하였으며, 출력되는 광 신호의 세기를 측정하여 VOA를 제어하는데 있어서 VOA 출력에서 바로 PD(Photo Detector)로 입력하여 AWC(Arrayed Waveguide Grating) 출력에서 광 신호를 다시 분파하여 PD에 입력하는 번거로움을 개선하였다.

Performance Analysis of Handoff Channel Assignment Scheme in CDMA Cellular System (CDMA 셀룰러시스템에서의 핸드오프 채널할당기법 성능분석)

  • In this paper, the prioritized queueing handoff scheme in CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) cellular system is proposed. Also, the analytical survey for the proposed scheme is carried out, and the performance of this scheme is compared with that of non prioritized scheme and FIFO (First In First Out) queue scheme by computer simulation. The handoff region is defined as the time between the handoff treshold and the receiver threshold, and it is used for the maximum queue waiting time in the proposed scheme. The handoff and the receiver thresholds are defined as rewpectively: 1) the time that the Pilot Strength Measurement Message in the neighbor in the neighbor cell is received to the BS (Base Station) under the T_ADD threshold; and 2) the time that the T_DROP timer is expired and the Pilot Strength Measurement Message in the current cell is received to the BS under the T_DROP threshold. The performance metrics for analyzing the proposed scheme are : 1) probability of forced termination; 2) probability of call blocking; 3) ratio of carried traffic to total offered load; 4) average queue size; 5) average handoff delay time in queue. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme maintains high performance for handoff requests at a small penalty in total system capacity.

  • A simple optical signal to noise ratio monitoring method using fiber Bragg grating is proposed for monitoring performance of OADM. OSNR of each channel is determined by monitoring the optical power transmitted and reflected from fiber Bragg gratings, simultaneously. We have obtained OSNR with accuracy better than 0.8㏈ compared with OSA of 0.1nm optical resolution in the wide input power range between -6 ㏈m and -23㏈m per channel.

  • In this paper, we studied about the level controller of optical signal with 40 channels by 4 VOA(Variable Optical Attenuator) with 12 channels. Total 8 microprocessors control 40 chamois for control of optical signal level so that a microprocessor controls 5 channels each. Moreover a microprocessor was added to communicate with outside and transfer instruction to each microprocessor. The output optical signal is measured and VOA is controlled as a result of it. The VOA outputs is inputted into PD(Photo Detector) at once. We could control multi-channel optical signals simply like this.

Gaze Detection System by IR-LED based Camera (적외선 조명 카메라를 이용한 시선 위치 추적 시스템)

  • The researches about gaze detection have been much developed with many applications. Most previous researches only rely on image processing algorithm, so they take much processing time and have many constraints. In our work, we implement it with a computer vision system setting a IR-LED based single camera. To detect the gaze position, we locate facial features, which is effectively performed with IR-LED based camera and SVM(Support Vector Machine). When a user gazes at a position of monitor, we can compute the 3D positions of those features based on 3D rotation and translation estimation and affine transform. Finally, the gaze position by the facial movements is computed from the normal vector of the plane determined by those computed 3D positions of features. In addition, we use a trained neural network to detect the gaze position by eye's movement. As experimental results, we can obtain the facial and eye gaze position on a monitor and the gaze position accuracy between the computed positions and the real ones is about 4.2 cm of RMS error.
