  • The purpose of this study is to investigate a causal relationship between the mode of production and change of rural society. While dominant theories of social change have stressed variation of contingencies and periodical contexts, this theoretical paper drives a new insight paralleling diverse theoretical arguments of each mode of production with rural and urban changes. Investigating the drifts of intellectual ideologies of the mode of production, we get through diverse paradigm shifts of the production accumulation and its trigger effects on rural change. More specifically, the present study investigates change of rural society by way of investigating such fluctuations of societal changes as ancient society, slavery society, feudal society, industrial society, post-industrial society, and information society. We find that transportation and communication technologies have had a key role in the changes, however, the effects of the technologies on social changes have been different between rural- and urban-society. While we take it for granted that flexible accumulation in post-industrial society and time-space compression and informatization in information society will reduce developmental gap between rural- and urban-society, we also found that there have been big differences of actual application of the technologies between theory and reality in each era of mode of production.

This study aims to apply the contents and principles of the rural structural adjustment program for the extension education. It argues that the rural extension should play a pivotal role to gather, process, and deliver the information related to the rural structural adjustment initiating rapid rural social changes. It suggests that the rural extension services should deal with the development of industries through introducing business management techniques and linking relevant laborers, and the education and employment guidance of potential employees as well as the technological assistance on farm management to farmers.

  • The Korean government has promoted rural development projects aimed at bridging the gap between cities and rural areas. However, prior research in assessing available rural projects was mainly focused on only part of the agricultural area, evaluation of project types and improvement measures, analysis of operating management policies, and measuring levels of importance by sub-project categories, and yet the study found a little study on residents' satisfaction of the project who is the direct and fundamental beneficiary. In particular, comparative studies on rural and fishing village residents were insufficient. Thus, the present study chose village residents from Chodo-ri where the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries held the Customized Capacity Empowerment Project from the Gangwon Fishing Village Specialized Support Center and Songgye-ri where was the project area for rural revitalization project to navigate changes on both perception and satisfaction of the village residents before and after the education.

  • The objectives of the study are to improve techniques for social impact assessment and to suggest their measuring methods to apply in small scale rural development projects. Population, residence, industries, and traffic volumes were selected to measure the social and economic impact assessment of Seongeup agricultural water development project in Jeju Province. Existing data gathering methods were used to estimate the changes of population and traffic volumes. Interview schedule for villagers was applied to estimate the residents' satisfaction to living environments. Interview schedule for experts was applied to estimate agricultural productivity and land price. The results of social and economic impact assessment show that there will be considerable changes in living environments, agricultural productivity, and land price. On the contrary, the project will make little impacts on the changes of population, em-ployment, and traffic volumes.

Samga 3 Ri, Yong-In, KyungKi-Do was chosen for this study. The previous research, conducted in 1987 by using a field survey method, was compared with this study. 1) The study showed that the physical changes of village include an increase in the number of rooms and nonagricultural population, and variety of house types. Therefore, social intimacy, reallocation of houses according to residents' occupations, and apartments for non-agricultural population should be considered in planning village. 2) It is found that the resident's needs were to increase the number of rooms, expansion of space, and to modernize kitchin systems. The investigation on newly constructed houses indicated that residents' needs were two-story houses, changes of spaces - the number of bathrooms, private bedroom adjacent to An-bang.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the changes of rural housing conditions by comparing the general housing indicators of rural area and those of urban. For those purposes, the indicators that present the housing conditions are set up, and the changes of average housing conditions are analyzed by a region : Shis(cities), Ups, Myons. For the analysis, Population and Housing Census Report and related data were used. Rural housing conditions have become better since the 1960s in the aspect of quality. They are, however, relatively much worse than those of urban areas. The gap of housing conditions between urban and rural housing is big, especially in qualitative indicators, which are housing facilities. Quantitative indicators, which are housing supply rate and ownership rate, are better than urban conditions.

  • Migration is defined as the movement of people between residential places, and represents interactions between regions. Changes in migration involve changes in both the number of migrants toward/from regions and migration patterns across regions. However, most migration studies have focused only on the change in migrants, while no empirical study captures changes in migration patterns. In this paper, I present a function using the cosine similarity to measure changes in migration patterns, and apply it to 2001-2016 migration data of Korea. The results show that the migration patterns of Korea shifted in 2007, resulting in two distinct clusters. Local areas experienced various migration pattern changes despite few changes in the number of migrants.
