  • In order to raise the accuracy of meteorological data, several numerical experiments about the usefulness of data assimilation to prediction of air pollution was carried out. Used data for data assimilation are surface meteorological components observed by Automatical Weather System with high spatial density. The usage of surface data assimilation gives changes of temperature and wind fields and the change caused by the influence of land-use on meterological simulation is more sensitive at night than noon. The data quality in assimilation it also one of the important factors to predict the meteorological field precisely and through the static IOA (Index of Agreement), simulated meteorological components with selected limited surface data assimilation are agree well with observations.

  • Among observational, local-environmental, and large-scale factors causing significant changes in climate records, the site relocations and the replacement of the instruments are well-known nonclimatic factors for the analysis of climatic trends, climatic variability, and for the detection of anthropogenic climate change such as heat-island effect and global warming. Using dataset that were contaminated by these nonclimatic factors can affect seriously the assessment of climatic trends and variability, and the detection of the climatic change signal. In this paper, the inhomogeneities, which have been caused by relocation of the observation site, in the climate data of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) were examined using two-phase regression model. The observations of pan evaporation and wind speed are more sensitive to site relocations than those of other meteorological elements, such as daily mean, maximum and minimum temperatures, with regardless to region.

  • Background and objective: This study was conducted to establish a Plant Hardiness Zone (PHZ) map, investigate the effect of global warming on changes in PHZ, and elucidate the difference in the distribution of evergreen trees between the central and southern region within hardiness Zone 7b in Korea. Methods: Mean annual extreme minimum temperature (EMT) and related temperature fluctuation data for 40 years (1981 to 2020) in each of the meteorological observation points were extracted from the Open MET Data Portal of the Korea Meteorological Administration. Using EMT data from 60 meteorological observation points, PHZs were classified according to temperature range in the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. Changes in PHZs for each decade related to the effects of global warming were analyzed. Temperature fluctuation before and after the day of EMT were analyzed for 4 areas of Seoul, Suwon, Suncheon, and Jinju falling under Zone 7b. For statistical analysis, descriptive statistics and ANOVA were performed using the IBM SPSS 22 Statistics software package. Results: Plant hardiness zones in Korea ranged from 6a to 9b. Over four decades, changes to warmer PHZ occurred in 10 areas, especially in colder ones. Based on the analysis of daily temperature fluctuation, the duration of sub-zero temperatures was at least 2 days in Seoul and Suwon, while daily maximum temperatures were above zero in Suncheon and Jinju before and after EMT day. Conclusion: It was found that the duration of sub-zero temperatures in a given area is an important factor affecting the distribution of evergreen trees in PHZ 7b.

  • Recent years, due to the direct or indirect damages caused by meteorological disasters more and more attention have been paid to natural disasters. At same time, diversified and multi-sensory interactive meteorological services is increasingly demanded. In this study, novel interactive meteorological service was compared with the traditional communication methods. Combining with case studies and systems creation, a virtual reality weather simulation framework was proposed, and a realistic virtual game environment providing real-time and historical weather information was created. The primary goal of this study is to build a weather display cabinet game system by using virtual reality technology, and promoting public's understanding of the principles of weather changes. With the interactive games in realistic scenarios, public's awareness for disasters prevention could be promoted. It is helping to change public's traditional understanding of meteorological theories, and will provide a more convenient way for the public to explore more effective weather forecasts. The simulation system is supported by VR technology. It was combined with Leap Motion interactive equipment to make popularization games for weather science. T-test data analysis showed that the application of VR technology in weather games has strong operability and interactivity.

  • Urban environmental problem became one of major issues during its urbanization processes. Environmental impacts are assessed during recent urban planning and development. Though the environmental impact assessment considers meteorological impact as a minor component, changes in wind environment during development can largely affect the distribution pattern of air temperature, humidity, and pollutants. Impact assessment of local wind is, therefore, a major element for impact assessment prior to any other meteorological impact assessment. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models are utilized in various fields such as in wind field assessment during a construction of a new building and in post analysis of a fire event over a mountain. CFD models require specially formatted input data and produce specific output files, which can be analyzed using special programs. CFD's huge requirement in computing power is another hurdle in practical use. In this study, a CFD model and related software processors were automated and integrated as a microscale wind environmental impact assessment system. A supercomputer system was used to reduce the running hours of the model. Input data processor ingests development plans in CAD or GIS formatted files and produces input data files for the CFD model. Output data processor produces various analytical graphs upon user requests. The system was used in assessing the impacts of a new building near an observatory on wind fields and showed the changes by the construction visually and quantitatively. The microscale wind assessment system will evolve, of course, incorporating new improvement of the models and processors. Nevertheless the framework suggested here can be utilized as a basic system for the assessment.

  • The infrared signature of a ship is largely influenced by the ocean environment of the operating area, which has been known to cause large changes in the signature. As a result, the weather condition has to be clearly set for an analysis of the infrared signatures. It is necessary to analyze meteorological data for all the oceans where the ship is supposed to be operated. This is impossibly costly and time consuming because of the huge size of the data. Therefore, the creation of a standard environmental variable for an infrared signature research is necessary. In this study, we compared and analyzed sampling methods to represent ocean data close to the Korean peninsula. In order to perform this research, we collected ocean meteorological records from KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration), and sampled these in numerous ways considering five variables that are known to affect the infrared signature. Specifically, a simple random sampling method for all the data and 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D stratified sampling methods were compared and analyzed by considering the mean square errors for each method.

  • Greenhouse gases (GHGs) such as carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), methane (CH$_4$), nitrous oxide ($N_2$O), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), sulphur hexafluoride (SF$_{6}$), together with water vapour ($H_2O$) and ozone play an important role in determining the earth's climate. The primary cause of the enhancement of GHGs is the global use of fossil fuels to generate heat, power, and electricity for a growing world population, as well as the changes in the land use, especially for agriculture. In addition, biomass buring and biofuel emissions play major roles in the GHG emissions in the Asian region because they produce large amounts of carbon monoxide (CO), nonmethane volatile organic compounds(NMVOC), black carbon(BC) and other gases. • The increase of carbon monoxide in the ambient air due to the emissions from point sources without control was estimated using three -dimensional numerical models. The target area was Ulsan where one of the largest industrial complexes was located. As a typical example using numerical models for air quality impact analysis of criteria pollutants that will determine whether the air quality standards would be exceeded or not, the following approaches were suggested. They include: (1) investigation of pre-existing atmospheric conditions, (2) identification of major factors causing high concentrations, (3) selection of episode days. (4) preparation of three-dimensional meteorological data, (5) confirmation of agreement between measured and predicted concentrations in the emission conditions of episode days, and (6) estimation of the impact due to changes of the emission conditions. In the present work, daily meteorological conditions for the specific period were classified into four clusters of distinctive features, and the episode days were selected individually from each cluster. Emphasis was placed on the selection of episodes representing meteorological conditions conducive to high concentrations especially for point sources that were sensitive to the wind direction variations.
