Tidal flow and water quality were simulated in this paper to assess environmental impact caused by pier construction projects in Onsan harbor system. The Surfacewater Modeling System (SMS) was applied to the Onsan harbor system, where coastal reclamation and dredging were planned to build the piers. A finite element mesh was constructed and refined to cover the complicated geometry of the Onsan harbor and the proposed reclamation area. The time variable change of tidal height at harbor inlet was given as an input condition to tidal simulation. The water quality simulation was based on the discharge rate of suspended solids at the reclamation area. The simulation results have shown reasonable agreements with real situations in both tidal flow and water quality. According to the proposed plan, tidal flow and water quality were predicted during and after the pier construction. The tidal simulation study showed that there would be no discernible change of tidal current in the harbor except for the dredged area. The water quality simulation, however, predicted that suspended solids would increase significantly near the reclaimed and dredged areas during construction.
Due to the drastic growth of national economy and the development of overall territory, the shapes of national land and coastal areas are changing from day to day. To detect such changes in lands and coasts efficiently, as well as to establish an appropriate usage plan, it is necessary to secure a monitoring system for coastal areas based on the observation and analysis of the change in coastlines. Currently, looking at the field of producing national coastlines, the lengths of coastlines are inaccurate due to the vague definition of dividing coastline boundaries and insufficient observation data. The level of accuracy and reliability of previous data are also in the very low. This paper used aerial photographs with certain intervals to monitor the change in coastal areas of Songjeong, Haeundae, Kwanganri, Songdo and Dadaepo. The local area subjected for this research was limited to areas near Busan.
This research is aim to analyze of changing landscape and according to phenological cycle from image information of coastal environment obtained by multi-media were analyzed by camera and satellite image. The digital camera and satellite image were used for tidal flat vegetation monitoring during the construction of Sihwa lake. The vegetation type and phenological cycle of Sihwa tidal flat have been changed with the Sihwa lake ecosystem. The environment changes of Sihwa tidal flat area and ecological change were analyzed by field work digital camera images and satellite images. The airborne, UAV and satellite images were classified with the changed elements of coastal ecological environment and tidal flat vegetation monitoring carried out the changed area and shape of vegetation distribution with time series images.
The aggravation of coastal erosion due to climate change has recently emerged as a global issue, and the international community is aware of the risk and is applying national consultations and various policies. In the case of coastal countries located in the Mediterranean Sea and the Caribbean Sea, coastal buffer zones and coastal management plans are established at a national level, and the United States is establishing coastal area management plans at the city level. In Korea, coastal erosion management areas are designated and managed to prevent coastal erosion and coastal disasters, but the number of designated areas and policies for coastal land areas are lacking. Therefore, in this study, we study policy cases applied to coastal land to prevent and reduce coastal erosion and coastal disasters through policy status and overseas cases, and seek ways to improve coastal buffer zone policies. As a result of the study, implications were drawn that expansion of the coastal buffer zone for coastal land areas and standards for establishing buffer zones based on scientific analysis are necessary.
This paper presents the results from a hydrodynamic model study to predict the impacts of coastal reclamation in Pusan harbor system using RMA2 which is a tidal flow model of the US Army Corps of Engineers' TABS-2 system. A finite element mesh was constructed and refined to cover the complicated geometry of Pusan harbor system and the proposed reclamation area. The model was calibrated to tidal elevations and currents measured during spring fall syzygys. Under the three different tidal conditions including summer winter syzygys, spring fall quarters, and summer winter quarters, the model predictions were compared with the field measurements both in tidal elevation and current. In all cases, there were excellent agreements between the model predictions and the field measurements. The validated model was then used to predict the changes in tidal current and elevation that might occur due to the coastal reclamation. It was predicted that there would be no change in tidal elevation of this system after the reclamation. In tidal current, however, discernible changes were predicted near the proposed reclamation area both in magnitude and direction.
Human activity has been the major threat to wetlands. Agriculture, industrial development, and urban and suburban sprawl have caused the greatest losses of coastal wetlands. In fact, riceland agriculture, because of the flooding that goes with it, provides some additional wetland habitat not otherwise available. The biggest current source of loss for freshwater coastal wetlands is from urban sprawl. In this study, spatial analysis method such as landscape index were applied to Sihwa area in Ansan city. The SMA (Spectral Mixture Analysis) method using Landsat image showed the change distribution of wetland vegetation from 1996 to 2004. The southern part of Sihwa wetland have been changed with Suda japonica of 24% and reed vegetation of 34% on coastal wetland which were covered with tidal flat.
Background: Ecophysiological characteristics of Rosa rugosa were analyzed under different environmental factors from May to October 2022. Photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, chlorophyll content, leaf water content (LWC), osmolality, carbohydrate content, and total ion content were measured to compare the physiological characteristics of R. rugosa at two study sites (i.e., in large pots and in the Goraebul coastal sand dune area). Results: When R. rugosa was exposed to high temperatures, photosynthetic parameters including net photosynthetic rate (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs) in both experiment areas declined. In addition, severe photoinhibition occurs when R. rugosa is continuously exposed to high photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and because of this, relatively low Y(II) (i.e., the quantum yield of photochemical energy conversion in photosystem II [PSII]) and high Y(NO) (i.e., the quantum yield of non-regulated, non-photochemical energy loss in PSII) in the R. rugosa of the pot were observed. As the high Y(NPQ) (i.e., the quantum yield of regulated non-photochemical energy loss in PSII) of R. rugosa in the coastal sand dune, they dissipated the excessed photon energy through the non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) mechanism when they were exposed to relatively low PAR and low temperature. Rosa rugosa in the coastal sand dune has higher chlorophyll a and carotenoid content. The high chlorophyll a + b and low chlorophyll a/b ratios seemed to optimize light absorption in response to low PAR. High carotenoid content played an important role in NPQ. As a part of the osmotic regulation in response to low LWCs, R. rugosa exposed to high temperatures and continuously high PAR used soluble carbohydrates and ions to maintain high osmolality. Conclusions: We found that Fv/Fm was lower in the potted plants than in the coastal sand dune plants, indicating the vulnerability of R. rugosa to high temperatures and PAR levels. We expect that the suitable habitat range for R. rugosa will shrink and move to north under climate change conditions.
Due to climate change, coastal areas are being flooded with torrential rain, typhoons, and tsunamis. In addition, non-point source pollutants (NPSs) that accumulated on the ground, streets, and buildings during the dry season are washed off by rain and stormwater runoff, which adds to the damage associated with environmental pollution, e.g., pollution that makes its way into the ocean. Recently, low impact development (LID) has been considered as a means of controlling water circulation and NPSs. In the coastal area, permeable blocks have been constructed mainly to reduce the flood damage caused by waves. Some important design factors that must be considered to ensure long-term performance are the permeability coefficient, clogging, and the efficiency of the removal of total suspended solids (TSS), but currently there are no standardized design criteria or testing techniques that are used worldwide. Herein, we analyzed the permeability coefficient and the TSS removal efficiency tendency according to the permeability area ratio with an easily-detachable, permeable block filled with calcinated yellow soils as the filter media. Our lab-scale tests indicated that, when the permeability area ratio was 25%, the reduction of the permeability coefficient after clogged was 11%, which was a significant decrease compared to other cases. Permeability persistence increased when the permeability area ratio increased from 50% to 75%. The TSS removal efficiency decreased as the permeability area ratio increased. Our pilot-scale test indicated that the TSS removal efficiency was more than 80% higher in all cases. We also found that the permeability persistence was excellent as the permeability area ratio increased, and, in actual construction, it is effective to set 5.3% of the total area as permeable area in terms of permeability and economic feasibility.
Time series satellite image data were used to discuss the possibility of the industrialization of the Kunsan area. The satellite observation was performed from 1979 to 1987 and it revealed a big change in the geographical features due to the rapid development of this area. From the previous experience regarding the industrialization of the coastal district of the Seto Inland Sea, the Kunsan area is very promising as an industrialized world trade center.

Since the tide embankment construction started in 1991, the coastal environment in and around the Saemangeum area has undergone changes rapidly, there is a need for monitoring the environmental change in this region. Owing to high temporal and spatial heterogeneity of the coastal ecosystem and processes as well as the expense with traditional filed sampling at discrete locations, satellite remote sensing measurements offer a unique perspective on mapping a large region simultaneously because of the synoptic and repeat coverage and that quantitative algorithms used for estimating constituents' concentration in the coastal environments. Thus, the main objectives of the present study are to analyze the retrieved Suspended Sediment (SS) pattern to predict changes after the commencement of the tide embankment construction work in 1991. This is accomplished with a series of the Landsat TM/ETM+ imagery acquired from 1985-2002 (a total of 18 imageries). Instead of a simple empirical algorithm, we implement an analytical SS algorithm, developed by Ahn et al. (2003), which is especially developed for estimating SS concentration (SSC) in Case-2 waters. The results show that there is a significant change in SS pattern, which is mainly influenced by the tide and tidal height after the construction of the embankment work. As the construction progressed, the distribution pattern of SS has greatly changed, and the rate of SS concentration in the gap area of the dyke of post-construction has significantly increased.
