Empirical Orthogonal Function Analysis of Seawater Temperature in the Southeastern Hwanghae (東南黃海에서 海水溫度의 EOF 分析)

  • Spatio-temporal variabilities of seawater temperature at 0 and 30m in the southeastern Hwanghae were studied by variance and empirical orthogonal function(EOF) analysis of long records of temperature between 1967 and 1982. The spatial distribution of monthly mean sea surface temperature has a pattern similar to the long-term annual mean which decreases from south to north. On the contrary, the total variance computed from the annual mean of sea surface temperature(SST) increases from south to north. The variance of SST is found to be two times greater than that at 30m in the study area except coastal area south of Kyunggi Bay. The important variance of temperature seem s to be closely associated with the seasonal change of temperature because the first and second modes of EOF having a seasonal cycle explain 97.6% and 85.2% of variances at 0 and 30m, respectively. There is a large difference in temperature between the northern and southern parts of the study area during winter, while the difference becomes very small during summer. This might reflect that in summer the heat gain of sea surface from the incoming radiation is much more important than the heat loss or the oceanic heat advection. In summer coastal waters south of the Kyunggi Bay and around Mokpo are observed to be colder than offshore waters due to tidal mixing.

Variation of Density Stratification due to Fresh Water Discharge in the Kwangyang Bay and Jinju Bay (광양만과 진주만 해역에서 담수 유입으로 인한 밀도성층 변화)

  • This study simulate three-dimensional ocean circulation patterns using the EFDC model in the Kwangyang Bay and Jinju Bay, considering tide, water temperature and salinity. The numerical model results were verified using observed data. The model results well reproduced the observed data. As a result, ocean circulation patterns in the study area show convergence and divergence in the middle area of Noryang waterway and Daebang waterway, the residual flow patterns show typical two-layer circulation. According to the change of the density stratification in the Kwangyang Bay and Jinju Bay, the effect of fresh water is dominant in study area. In the case of Jinju Bay, although it is strongly influenced by the Namgang fresh water, also it is affected by Seomjin River when there is no discharge by Namgang Dam. On the other hand, the stratification of the Kwangyang Bay is relatively enhanced by the discharge of Namgang Dam.

Monitoring of the Sea Surface Temperature in the Saemangeum Sea Area Using the Thermal Infrared Satellite Data (열적외선 위성자료를 이용한 새만금 해역 해수표면온도 모니터렁)

  • The Saemangeum Reclamation Project was launched as a national project in 1991 to reclaim a large coastal area of 401 km$^2$ by constructing a 33-km long dyke. The final dyke enclosure in April 2006 has transformed the tidal flat into lake and land. The dyke construction has abruptly changed not only the estuarine tidal system inside the dyke, but also the coastal marine environment outside the dyke. In this study, we investigated the spatial change of SST distribution using the Landsat-5/7 and NOAA data before and after the dyke completion in the Saemangeum area. Satellite-induced SST was verified by compared with the various in situ measurements such as tower, buoy, and water sample. The correlation coefficient resulted in above 0.96 and RMSE was about 1$^{\circ}C$ in all data. 38 Landsat satellite images from 1985 to 2007 were analyzed to estimate the temporal and spatial change of SST distribution from the beginning to the completion of the Samangeum dyke's construction. The seasonal change in detailed spatial distribution of SST was measured, however, the estimation of change during the Saemangeum dyke's construction was hard to figure out owing to the various environmental conditions. Monthly averaged SST induced from NOAA data from 1998 to 2007 has been analyzed for a complement of Landsat's temporal resolution. At the inside of the dyke, the change of SST from summer to winter was large due to the relatively high temperature in summer. In this study, multi-sensor thermal remote sensing is an efficient tool for monitoring the temporal and spatial distribution of SST in coastal area.

  • Mariculture is contrasted with inland aqua-culturing fisheries. It is defind as the Industry of rearing Aquaorganism in limited coastal area relatively shallow in depth. Then, It's coming into being realization of Mariculture in it is long in history that Mariculture was realized in Korea. But it is from the early part of 1960s, that this industry has normally developed. Owing to 200 miles economy-zone problems of coastal countries, the development of deep sea fishing was limited, so the Korean Government has now appreciated the importance of cultured industries in the field of coastal fisheries. And the Korean Mariculture the output of which was only 18, 000 M/T in '60s attained 540, 000M/T in 1980s, has now occupied its relative importance in Korean Fisheries Industry. So the purpose of this report is to suggest the prospect of technical development of mariculture in the future of Korea, through the analysis of the various problems that affect upon the individual management '||'&'||' fishing ground utilization, along with the appreciation of "how to extend of those technical innovation" and "how the fishermen's technique level is extended at this stage. According to this study, the result is summarized as follows. First, Maricultural technique is classified into 8 sub-techniques as follows, as shown in fig. 1.Fig. 1. The Formation structure of mariculture technique Second, the change of technical method of mariculture in coastal area of Korea has made as 5 stages; 1) Scattering of culturing organism 2) Culturing by putting stone and installing bamboo 3) Culturing by installing rope and seeding 4) Culturing of putting objectives in cages 5) Culturing fish by feed Third, the maricultural fisheries of Korea has about 70 years long in history. It began from 1910s. But at that time there was no special technique in aquaculture and its technique was confined in searching out the object of species. The species was laver, oyster ect.Forth, although realization of mariculture in Korea has been long time, it is of late from 1960s that this has been industrial with normal development, and its technique of mariculture has mainly has developed from 1970s. Its result not only contributed to the high growth in Korean ecconomy along with the well balanced development between industires, but also it played a great role for the resolution of nation's food problem. Especially maricultural production has shown its sustained annual increase of 13.8% during the last 20 years. So the portion of mariculture among total fisheries stucture was extended from 4.1% in the early 1960s to 22.4% in 1980s.Fifth, it could be safely said that such development in maricultural field is resulted from the activity of aquacultural institutes such as Fisheries Reseach '||'&'||' Development production of major kinds such as Oyster, Sea-mustard, and Laver etc. As well as in the innovation of aquaculturing method with synthetic fiber utilization. FRDA has played important role in the efficient propargation of new aquacultural technique.Sixth, as for the change in aquaculture structure and its during period between 1970s and 1980s, the private management participation shown 25% increase from household number of 45, 173 to 56, 268 in total number. And in the respect of the management scale, of their management decreased, while it showed an increase in relative large scale management, the increase over 3 employees compared with other fisheries field between '70s and 80s.   • The purpose of this study is to derive spatial area(preventive zone) where the movement of livestock vehicles occurs frequently. For this purpose, this study used 6 periods facility entrance data provided by KAHIS. This data was converted into vehicle movement data between livestock facilities and aggregated into administrative district units. The R-mode factor analysis was performed on the constructed OD data, and the region extracted by the same factor was judged as one region. The results of the analysis are summarized as follows. First, the factor analysis of 6 periods data showed 16 ~ 18 factors, and the derived factors explained 63 ~ 68% of the total variance. Second, based on the factors that were derived, Jeonam coastal area, Jeonnam area, Jeonbuk area, Chungnam coastal area, Gyeongnam area, northern Gyeongbuk area, Yeongnam costal area were found to be stable, with little change over time. On the other hand, Chungbuk area, Gangwon area, Seoul metropolitan area are relatively volatile areas. Third, 13 areas were derived by combining data from six periods.

Analysis on the Area of Deltaic Barrier Island and Suspended Sediments Concentration in Nakdong River Using Satellite Images (위성영상을 활용한 낙동강 삼각주 연안사주의 면적 및 부유퇴적물 농도 변화 분석)

  • The estuary in Nakdong River has changes by the construction of harbors, land reclamation and artificial waterway changes. These resultslead to changes of extinction and creation of deltaic barrier island. The deltaic barrier island changes in the Nakdong River estuary affect the function of the barrier islands and cause environmental changes. Therefore, it is important to monitor the changes in the area of the Nakdong estuary. In this study, long-term changes of the area and suspended sediment of deltaic barrier island in the Nakdong River estuary were analyzed using Landsat TM/ETM+ images. As a result, end point rate (EPR) values of shoreline in Jinwoodo and Sinjado are about 5m/yr and about 50 m/yr, respectively. The EPR values of north-south and east-west direction in Doyodeung are 20 m/yr and -20 ~ 10 m/yr. The suspended sediment concentration (SSC) has a maximum value of $25g/m^3$ in the vicinity of Jinwoodo and Sinjado, while it has a maximum concentration of $40g/m^3$ in the vicinity of Shinjido and Doyodeung. In other words, the area and the SSC change are small in Jinwoodo, and the area change and the SSC variation are large in Sinjado and Doyodeung. As a result of analysis of correlation between area change and SSC variation using all data, the Pearson coefficient value (r) is 0.36 and it is 0.32 in winter data. In other words, it is considered that the SSC variation affectsthe deltatic barrier island area change. However, verification using advanced altimetry data is necessary in the future. These studies can be used for coastal monitoring and environmental monitoring.

  • We reviewed the methods employed in Korean tidal flat surveys to measure the local abundance of the endangered wildlife and marine protected species, the fiddler crab, Austruca lactea. A complete census for infinite population is impossible even in a limited habitat within a tidal flat, and density estimates from samples strongly vary due to diverse biological and ecological factors. The habitat boundaries and areas shift with periodicities or rhythmic activities of organisms as well as measurement errors. Hence the local abundance calculated from density and habitat areas should be regarded as transient. This conjecture was valid based on the spatio-temporal variations of the density averages, standard error ranges, and spatial distribution of the crab, A. lactea observed for 3 years (2015-2017) in Songdo tidal flat in Incheon. We proposed the potential habitat areas using the occurrence probability of 50% from logistic regression model, reflecting the importance of habitat conservation value as an alternative to local abundance. The spatial shape of potential habitat predicted from a generalized model would remain constant over time unless the species' critical environmental conditions change rapidly. The species-specific model is expected to be used for the introduction of desired species in future habitat restoration/creation projects.

Insect Fauna of Adjacent Areas of DMZ in Korea

  • Insect fauna in adjacent areas of Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) in Korea was surveyed seasonally in $2001{\sim}2003$. The survey area was divided into 3 regions (eastern mountain, middle inland, and western coastal regions) in accordance with administrative districts and topography. Sampling methods such as sweeping, sieving, beating, brushing and suction were used depending on the environmental and military conditions. Total 361 genera and 437 species of 116 families belonging to 14 orders were identified. Among these, 46 species were new to insect fauna of DMZ areas. Species richness was the highest in the eastern mountain region. Numbers of habitat-common and -specific species were 96 (22%) and 195 (47.2%), respectively. The insect species community similarity was highest (0.64) between eastern mountain region and western coastal region. Insect orders showing high species richness were Coleoptera (38.9%), Lepidoptera (19.2%), Orthoptera (9.4%), and Hemiptera (9.2%). These results will be useful information for study of history on the change of insect fauna and future conservation in DMZ areas.

  • In a coastal area, all of the vessels are always exposed to the potential risk, taking into the maritime accident statistics account over the last decades. To manage vessels underway safety, the characteristics of ship movements in a fairway should be recognized by VTS system or VTS operators. The IMO has already mandated the shipboard carriage of AIS since 2004, as stated in SOLAS Chapter V Regulation 19. As a result, the static and dynamic information of AIS data has been collected for vessel traffic management in the coastal areas and used for VTS. This research proposes a simple algorithm of recognizing potentially risky ships by observing their trajectories on the fairway. The static and dynamic information of AIS data are collected and the curvature for the ship trajectory is surveyed. The proposed algorithm finds out the irregularity of ship movement. The algorithm effectively monitors the change of navigation pattern from the curvature analysis of ship trajectory. Our method improves VTS functions in an intelligent way by analyzing the navigation pattern of vessels underway.

Comparision of Tidal Current Patterns at Keum River Estuary before and after Construction of Keum River Bank and Coastal Structures (금강하굿둑과 각종 해안구조물 설치 전, 후의 금강하구역 해수유동 양상 비교)

  • The tidal current patterns at Keum River Estuary before and after the construction of coastal structures were compared according to the CASES. The depth-integrated and tidal difference treatment applied FLOW2DH numerical model was used for the tidal current predictions. The test conditions consisted of before construction of coastal structures (CASE1), after construction of coastal structures (CASE2), and the addition of watergate operation(CASE1Q and CASE2Q), and present (CASE3). CASE1 showed a stable tidal current pattern, such as a natural estuary. In CASE2, the tidal current velocities and directions of the Keum River Estuary were changed due to the installed coastal structures. In particular, the tidal current velocities of the Gaeya open channel sections (P5~P9) in CASE2 were calculated to be 10~30% larger than that of CASE1. In the case of the Gunsan Inner Harbor (P4), which is closest to the Geum River Estuary, the ebb flow rate was approximately 250~300% faster than that of other CASEs due to the discharge of the watergate operation for 2.7 hours during the ebb of CASE1Q and CASE2Q. This will affect sediment transport, and it is predicted to lead to seabed changes. CASE3 is considered to be entering the stabilization stage according to the simulation of the tidal current velocities and directions of the Keum River Estuary and the surrounding coastal area.
