  • The amount of grain loss incurred during harvesting operation through the chaff-outlet of combine may not be negligible. To minimize this grain loss and optimize condition of combining, it may be necessary that the amout of chaff-outlet loss dependent on varying crop condition is to be estimated as exactly as possible. This study was thus intended to develop the monitor that could indicate the amount of grain lost through the chaff-outlet of combine during haravesting operation, and to find out driving and operating method of combine that could reduce chaff-outlet loss. In the study(1), the frequency distributions of each sound generated by the impact of kernels and chaff, the sound generated by the impact of the mixture of kernels and chaff, and vibration or noise created by the combine engine and other moving parts were investigated experimentally. Based on the results of frequency analyses, the loss monitor was developed which could measure the impact sound of paddy kernels that could be distinguished from those of other threshing products through chaff-outlet, and from vibration or noise created by the combine engine and other moving parts. Also in this study, detecting capability of monitor was tested by comparing the amount of grain lost through chaff-outlet with the amount of grain detected by the loss monitor, and changes in chaff-outlet grain loss on the increase of traveling speed, location of chaff-outlet loss control plate and variety of paddy rice were measured using the loss monitor. The monitor developed in this study efficiently measured the amount of grain lost through the chaff-outlet of combine. It was found that the chaff-outlet grain loss ratio was affected greatly by the variety of paddy rice, the location of chaff-outlet loss control plate and traveling speed of combine.

  • Chaff is one of important devices for heliborne protection from radars and missiles. When we use a chaff for heliborne protection, J/S(jamming signal of chaff vs reflected signal from heliborne) is important factor to analyze a heliborne survive. When the radial angle between missile and heliborne is changed, J/S of missile receiver is changed and jamming effectiveness of chaff is also changed. We calculate the RCS of chaff and heliborne, and compare the returned signals in a half power beam width of receiver antenna. We analyze chaff dispense modes and specially simulate the effectiveness of a dilution mode chaff between missile and heliborne.

  • Chaff is a kind of matter spreading atmosphere with the purpose of preventing aircraft from detecting by radar. The chaff is commonly composed of small aluminum pieces, metallized glass fiber, or other lightweight strips which consists of reflecting materials. The chaff usually appears on the radar images as narrow bands shape of highly reflective echoes. And the chaff echo has similar characteristics to precipitation echo, and it interrupts weather forecasting process and makes forecasting accuracy low. In this paper, the chaff echo recognizing and removing method is suggested using Bayesian network. After converting coordinates from spherical to Cartesian in UF (Universal Format) radar data file, the characteristics of echoes are extracted by spatial and temporal clustering. And using the data, as a result of spatial and temporal clustering, a classification process for analyzing is performed. Finally, the inference system using Bayesian network is applied. As a result of experiments with actual radar data in real chaff echo appearing case, it is confirmed that Bayesian network can distinguish between chaff echo and non-chaff echo.

  • This study was performed to examine the effects of chaff as bulking materials on temperature, pH, weight and volume reduction and salinity in aerobic composting of food wastes. Volume ratios of food wastes to chaff in reactor Control, Ch-1, Ch-2, Ch-3 and Ch-4 were 4:0, 4:1, 4:2, 4:3 and 4:4, respectively. Reactors were operated for 24 days with 1 hour stirring by 1 rpm and 2 hours aeration per day. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff resulted in the ascending of the highest reaction temperature and the elongation of the high temperature reaction period. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff resulted in the more fast time of pH ascending. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff resulted in the more fast consistency in the weight and volume reduction rates. Salinities were condensed by reaction days. The final salinity of Control was 2.79%, and the final range of salinities of chaff mixtures was 2.18 - 2.37%.

  • The growth inhibitiory effect of chaff vinegar against various food-borne pathogenic bacteria was evaluated. Bacterial growth was evaluated in chaff vinegar at concentrations of 15, 30, 50, 65, 80, and $100\%$ using the paper disc diffusion method and 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 1.8, 2.0, 2.2 and $2.5\%$ in broth. In the paper disc diffusion assay, chaff vinegar showed a clear zone on both the Gram-positive bacteria; Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative bacteria; Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Chaff vinegar exhibited the greatest growth inhibition for V. parahaemolyticus. The bactericidal effect of chaff vinegar on the E. coli O157:H7 was tested at concentrations ranging from 0.5 to $2.5\%$ (v/v) in the LB broth media. Chaff vinegar retarded the lag phase time of the growth curve in proportion in a concentration-dependent manner. Chaff vinegar at $2.5\%$ completely inhibited the growth of E. coli O157:H7.

  • This study was performed to compare the effects of chaff and sawdust as bulking materials on temperature, pH, weight and volume reduction and salinity in aerobic composting of food wastes. Volume ratios of food wastes to chaff in reactor of Control, Ch-l, Ch-2, Ch-3 and Ch-4 were 4:0, 4:1, 4:2, 4:3 and 4:4, respectively. Volume ratios of food wastes to sawdust in reactor of Control, Sd-l, Sd-2, Sd-3 and Sd-4 were 4:0, 4:1, 4:2, 4:3 and 4:4, respectively. Reactors were operated for 24 days with 1 hour stirring by 1 rpm and 2 hours aeration per day. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff and sawdust resulted in the reaction at higher reaction temperature and the elongation of the high temperature reaction period. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff and sawdust resulted in faster pH increase. In the volume ratio of 4:3 and 4:4, pH increased faster in food-chaff mixtures than in food-sawdust mixtures. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff and sawdust resulted in faster steady state in the weight reduction rate and the volume reduction rate. The weight reduction rates of chaff mixtures were higher than those of sawdust mixtures, but the volume reduction rates of sawdust mixtures were more higher than those of chaff mixtures. Salinity increased as composting reaction proceeded, due to reduction in mass weight. The final salinity of Control was 2.79%, and the final range of salinities of chaff and sawdust mixtures were 2.18∼2.37% and 1.86∼2.05%, respectively.

  • The concerns of wood vinegar increase with its various applications to food additive, functional drink, and in the sustainable farming. Chaff vinegar, a by-product of chaff charcoal which is produced by distilling smoke and having similar ingredients and efficacy with wood vinegar, contains harmful tar in the acceptable range and can be mass-produced. A chaff vinegar distiller, commercially mass-productive, was developed using a water cooling system. Initially distilled vinegar by the developed system contained little harmful tar in the acceptable range for the agricultural use and its acidity was about pH 3.2. Treatment of the chaff vinegar in the enhancing emergence test showed greater number of emerged seedlings, and vise-versa. Treatment of diluted in 100-holds showed 44.0% of emerged and 8.6% of not-emerged seedlings.

  • To discriminate and eliminate chaff echoes in radar measurements, a new removal algorithm in two-dimensional reflectivity composite at the height of 1.5 km has been developed by using the brightness temperature($T_B$) obtained from MTSAT-1R. This algorithm utilizes the fact that chaffs are not appeared in infrared satellite data of MTSAT-1R, but detected in radar measurements due to their significant backscattering in the given radar wavelength. The algorithm is evaluated for three different situations: chaff only, chaff mixed with convective storms, and chaff covered with clouds. The algorithm shows excellent performance for the cases of chaff only and chaff mixed with convective storms. However, the performance of the algorithm significantly depends on the presence of clouds. Thus, the statistical analysis of $T_B$ is performed in order to optimize the monthly threshold.
