Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration was investigated to remediate groundwater contaminated with chromate using a cationic surfactant, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC). Removal of chromate was expressed as a function of molar ratio of CPC to chromate. With 10 molar ratio of CPC, removal efficiency of chromate was reached to over 99%. The rejection of CPC was 90% at 1 molar ratio, gradually increased as the molar ratio increased.

Spectrophotometric determination of rare earth elements with MTB and the composition ratio were investigated in the presence of surfactants of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), Triton X-100, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTMAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB) at pH 6.5. The colour development between MTB and rare earths in the presence of cationic surfactants was very stable and more sensitive than that in the absence of surfactants. The largest absorbance increase was provided by CPC, which was therefore chosen for determination of rare earth elements. REE-MTB-CPC complex has absorption maxima at 650 nm and obeys the Beer's law in the range of 0∼100 ng/ml. Molar absorptivity is $6.6{\sim}9.4{\times}10^4\;mol^{-1}l\;cm^{-1}$.
In this study, chromate and cetylperidinium chloride (CPC) removal from artificial wastewater was monitored by using micellar enhanced ultrafiltration (MEUF) and activated carbon fibre (ACF) adsorption hybrid processes. For the efficient chromate removal, molar concentration of the CPC should be five times that of chromate and it should be at least one critical micelle concentration (CMC). The MEUF was found to be effective in the chromate removal while ACF in the CPC adsorption to produce chromate and CPC free effluents. The chromate and CPC removal was 99.8% from MEUF-ACF process. Effluent chromate concentration was exponentially correlated with molar ratio of CPC to chromate and pH.

The potential use of modified clays in the adsorption of vapor phase benzene and toluene was investigated. The modified clays OC-CPC, IOC, and Al-PILC were prepared for comparative purposes and were characterized using infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction. It was confirmed the intercalation of the aluminium pillar in IOC and Al-PILC, as well as the introduction of cetylpyridinium. The adsorption studies showed a great affinity of benzene and toluene for OC-CPC due to the hydrophobic character that resulted and also to the increase in the interlaminar distance. IOC showed a lower affinity for the benzene and toluene, followed by Al-PILC. Natual clay had no affinity for benzene and toluene due to its hydrophilic nature. Clay materials having a laminar structure can be chemically modified, changing their physiochemical characteristics, such as interlaminar distance, surface area, pore size, and chemical affinity. In this study, it was focused on obtaining modified clays to be used for the adsorption of volatile organic chemicals.
Endive is widely consumed in a fresh-cut form owing to its rich nutritional content. However, fresh-cut vegetables are susceptible to contamination by pathogenic bacteria. This study investigated the antibacterial activities of the combined treatment of cinnamon leaf oil emulsion containing cetylpyridinium chloride or benzalkonium chloride (CLC and CLB, respectively) as a cationic surfactant and ultrasound (US) against Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli O157:H7 on endive. The combined treatment of CLC or CLB with US reduced the population of L. monocytogenes by 1.58 and 1.47 log colony forming units (CFU)/g, respectively, and that of E. coli O157:H7 by 1.60 and 1.46 log CFU/g, respectively, as compared with water washing treatment. The reduction levels of both pathogens were higher than those observed with 0.2 mg/ml sodium hypochlorite. In addition, the combined treatment showed no effect on the quality of the fresh-cut endive (FCE). In particular, the degree of browning in FCE was less for the treatment group than for the control and water washing treatment groups. Thus, cationic surfactant-based cinnamon leaf oil emulsions combined with US may be an effective washing treatment for the microbial safety of FCE.
The present study was conducted to investigate the preparative methods of agarose for gel electrophoresis from agar. Naturally occuring agar consists of two main polysaccharides, the neutral polysaccharide agarose and the acid sulphated polysaccharide agaropectin. The sulphate and carboxyl functions of the agar are accumulated in the agaropectin. The hydrophilic, non-ionogenic, rigid and transparent gel matrix of the agarose was found to be suitable for gel electrophoresis gel filtration and affinity chromatography. Agar was purified by chitosan treatment, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) treatment, and polyethylene glycol (PEG) treatment. Yields of agarose purified from agar with chitosan, CPC and PEG were 56.7%, 55.6% and 62.3%. It was proper to treat with chitosan in preparative methods of agarose for gel electrophoresis from agar.

The effect of the presence of dissolved organic matters(DOM) on the binding of phenanthrene to cetylpyridinium chloride(CPC) coated sand was investigated. The distribution coefficient of phenanthrene increased with increase of sufactant coverage, and decreased with the presence of dissolved organic matters except for the 1.600mg/g coverage case. Both Aldrich humic acid and extracted dissolved organic matter showed the similar tendency. For the quantification of the overall distribution coefficient, this study presented mass distribution model and estimated the sorption equilibrium coefficients of hydrophobic organic compounds(HOCs) in multi system. The suggested model combined a series of sorption equilibrium relationships including the adsorption of DOMs on sorbents, the binding between HOCs and DOMs, and the sorption of HOCs on sorbents with or without DOMs.

Au fine particle dispersed TiO2 film was prepared on silica glass substrate by sol-gel dip and firing process. The films were fabricated from the system of titanium tetraisoproxie-EtOh-HCl_H2O-hydrogen tetrachloroaurate(III) tetrahydrate. The conditions for the formation of the clear solution and dissolving high concentration of Au compound were examined. And a photoreduction process was adopted to control the size of gold metal particles. Phase evolution of matrix TiO2 and variation of Au particle with UV irradiation were investigated by XRDA, SEM, TEM and UV-visible spectrophotometer. And the effect of CPCl(Cetylpyridinium chloride monohydrate) as a dispersion agent was evaluated.
It has been known that nonlinear characteristics of sorption affect the transport behavior of water soluble pollutants in soils. However detailed experimental studies have not been performed to verify the effect of non-linearity of adsorption isotherm on transport of chemicals in porous media. In this research, the distortion of breakthrough curves of a cationic surfactant (cetylpyridinium chloride, CPC) in a engineered stainless steel column packed with glass beads were investigated. Glass beads with about 110 $\mu\textrm{m}$diameter coated with a thin n-decane film were used as the media providing the sorption surface for CPC. The CPC adsorption isotherm on the surface of n-decane from aqueous solution was a typical Langmuir type. The breakthrough curve of CPC using step Input showed a late breakthrough on the front side and early breakthrough on the back side accordance to the shape of the isotherm. The retardation factor of CPC was found to be a strong function of the input concentration, which also a manifestation of the non-linearity of the isotherm. The retardation factors for the CPC with step input agreed with those of pulse input that the maximum concentrations are controlled to be the same as the step input concentrations. This results support the validity of the unproven field practices of using hydrogeotracers with non-linear adsorption isotherms to determine the hydrogeological parameters, e.g., NAPL saturation, air-water or NAPL-water interfacial areas.
The objective of this research was to characterize fucoidans isolated from Laminaria religiosa and Undaria pinnatifida in Korea to obtain basic data for Production of soluble dietary fiber materials with biological functionality. Fucoidans were successively extracted 3 times at $65\%$ for 1hr with arid solution of pH 2.0, and cetylpyridinium chloride was used for partial purification. The yields of partially purified fucoidans were $2.71\%$ for L. religiosa, $6.65\%$ for sporophylls of U. pinnatifida and $0.40\%$ for blade of U. pinnatifida. The yield from sporophylls of U. pinnatifida was highest among the sample tested, whereas the yield from blade of U. pinnatifida was lowest. It appeared that the fuconidans content in different parts of U. pinnatifida varied. Partially purified fucoidans were separated into 3 fractions by DEAE-Sephadex A-25 ion exchange column and the maior fractions were refractionated with tractional precipitation with ethanol. $60-70\%$ ethanol precipitated fractions of 1. religiosa and sporophylls of U. pinnatifida turned out to be homogeneous by cellulose acetate electrophoresis and gel filteration chromatography. The molar ratios of fucose, galactose, and sulfate in the purified fucoidans(ethanol precipitated fractions) were 1 : 0.31 : 2.43 for L. religiosa and 1 : 0.97 : 1.99 for sporophylls of U. pinnatifida. The averaged molecular weights of the purified fucoidans from L. religiosa and sporophylls of U. pinnatifida were 31,000 and 38,000, respectively.
