  • Objectives This report aimed to investigate the possibility of correcting facial asymmetry using cervical Chuna manipulation treatment and functional cerebrospinal technique and introduce meaningful additional improvement of systemic symptoms of non-surgical Korean medicine treatments through three case studies. Methods Three patients with facial asymmetry were treated using Korean medicine treatments. The effects of the treatments were all measured using photographs, lateral cephalograms, and whole-body radiogram and Likert scale. Results After Korean medicine treatment, there were significant correction effects of asymmetry in photography, cephalography, and whole-body radiogram and meaningful score of Likert scale. Conclusions This study suggested that Korean medicine treatments may be effective in facial asymmetry. Improving muscular asymmetry, including soft tissue asymmetry and functional asymmetry, has meaningful effects on maintaining an overall balance of the body. Facial asymmetry should be treated by making an alignment of the whole body and there should be further well-designed, randomized, and placebo-controlled trials to verify these results.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyse the domestic trends of Chuna treatments techniques in Korean literature. Methods: We searched the clinical trials on Chuna treatments through both electronic search(used keyword 'chuna') and hand search in 3 Korean web databases(OASIS, NDSL, RISS) and 4 related journals(The Journal of Korea CHUNA Manual Medicine for Spine & Nerves, Journal of Oriental Rehabilitation Medicine, The Journal of Korean Acupuncture & Moxibustion Society, Journal of Korean Medicine Society). All relevant clinical trials were selected and extracted to be analyzed according to their published year, journals, types of study, used techniques. Results: The number of the clinical studies tends to increase every year. The studies on Chuna treatments were mainly published in The Journal of Korea Chuna Manual Medicine for Spine & Nerves. In case of types of study, case reports and case series were predominant. The most frequently adopted techniques of Chuna in studies were flexion distraction technique for lumbar spine and JS supine position cervical spine distraction. Conclusions: Through the results of this study, we hope that the more qualitative education could be conducted by strengthening the techniques which often used. Also analysis of the reason of rarely used techniques should be conducted and the modification or developing techinques should be followed as a counter measures. As applying more rigorous methodology, more qualitative evidence based Chuna studies should be conducted in future clinical research.

  • This study reports the effects of Korean medicine treatments including Chuna manual therapy (CMT) and exercise treatment for a patient suffering with cervical spinal stenosis. We treated patient diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis. The patient was treated with CMT once a day for 26 days. Manual muscle testing (MMT), ratio and degree of numbness, numerical rating scale (NRS) were used as tools for evaluating the patient's progress. MMT was increased from 3+ to 5, ratio and degree of numbness were decreased from grade (Gr.) 9 to Gr. 4, NRS was decreased from 5 to 3. This study suggests that CMT and self-exercise can be considered as effective treatment for cervical spinal stenosis.

  • Objectives This study aims to comprehensively review research utilizing ultrasonography for assessing manipulative treatment on spinal diseases, with the goal of promoting the wider integration of ultrasound imaging into clinical practice. Methods A systematic search was conducted on three international databases (Embase, PubMed, Cochrane) up to July 23, 2023. The search included key terms such as ultrasonography, manipulation, and skeletal muscle. The inclusion criteria narrowed down the selection to studies specifically related to lumbar and cervical vertebrae. Results Eleven studies were included in the review, with 10 focusing on lumbar vertebrae and one on cervical vertebrae, all employing spinal manipulation treatment. Among the 11 selected studies, nine primarily focused on ultrasound imaging to measure muscle thickness, while two utilized shear wave elastography to assess muscle stiffness. Also, rigorous measures were taken to ensure the reliability of the ultrasonography data. Conclusions This scoping review highlights the limited but growing evidence supporting the use of ultrasonography to assess manipulative treatment for spinal diseases. Despite a scarcity of studies in South Korea, it is crucial to recognize the potential of ultrasonography in becoming a widely used and practical tool for evaluating the effectiveness of manipulative treatments in the near future.
