  • The doped-ceria is a strong candidate material for an intermediate temperature SOFC. However, the mechanical strength and the magnitude of electrical conductivity need to be increased at low sintering temperature. In this study, to improve both properties, $1at\% $ of Mg, Ca, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ga, and Zr were added to the GDC20 ($20at\%$ Gd-doped Ceria) and sintered at $1350^{\circ}C$ that is $250^{\circ}C$ lower than $1600^{\circ}C$. With addition, the relative density of the sintered sample increased. Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Ga doped-GDC20 showed high relative density over $92\%$. Among them, Ga doped-GDC20 showed the most improved sinterability. The conductivity of dopedGDC20 increased by $\~10$ times at $300\~700^{\circ}C$.

  • Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are some of the most efficient electrochemical energy sources for transportation applications because of their clean, green, and high efficiency characteristics. The optimization of catalyst layer morphology is considered a feasible approach to achieve high performance of PEMFC membrane electrode assembly (MEA). In this work, we studied the effect of the solvent on the catalyst layer of PEMFC MEAs fabricated using the electrostatic spray deposition method. The catalyst ink comprised of Pt/C, a Nafion ionomer, and a solvent. Two types of solvent were used: isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and dimethylformamide (DMF). Compared with the catalyst layer prepared using IPA-based ink, the catalyst layer prepared with DMF-based ink had a dense structure because the DMF dispersed the Pt/C-Nafion agglomerates smaller and more homogeneously. The size distribution of the agglomerates in catalyst ink was confirmed through Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and the microstructure of the catalyst layer was compared using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). In addition, the electrochemical investigation was performed to evaluate the solvent effect on the fuel cell performance. The catalyst layer prepared with DMF-based ink significantly enhanced the cell performance (1.2 A cm-2 at 0.5 V) compared with that fabricated using IPA-based ink (0.5 A cm-2 at 0.5 V) due to the better dispersion and uniform agglomeration on the catalyst layer.

  • An interconnect in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) electrically connects unit cells and separates fuel from oxidant in the adjoining cells. The interconnects can be divided broadly into two categories - ceramic and metallic interconnects. A thin and gastight ceramic layer is deposited onto a porous support, and metallic interconnects are coated with conductive ceramics to improve their surface stability. This paper provides a short review on ceramic materials for SOFC interconnects. After a brief discussion of the key requirements for interconnects, the article describes basic aspects of chromites and titanates with a perovskite structure for ceramic interconnects, followed by the introduction of dual-layer interconnects. Then, the paper presents protective coatings based on spinel-or perovskite-type oxides on metallic interconnects, which are capable of mitigating oxide scale growth and inhibiting Cr evaporation.

  • An all solid-state thin film battery (TFB) was fabricated by growing, undoped and Pt-doped vanadium oxide cathode film ( $V_2$ $O_{5}$ ) on I $n_2$ $O_3$: Sn coated glass, respectively. Room temperature charge-discharge measurements based on Li/Lipon/ $V_2$ $O_{5}$ full-cell structure with a constant current clearly shows that the Pt-doped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ cathode film is superior, in terms of cyclibility. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicate that the Pt doping process induces a more random amorphous structure than an undoped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ film. In addition to its modified structure, the Pt-doped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ film has a smoother surface than the undoped sample. Compared to an undoped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ film, the Pt doped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ cathode film has a higher electron conductivity. We hypothesize that the addition of Pt alters electrochemical performance in a manner of making more random amorphous structure and gives an excess electron by replacing the $V^{+5}$. Possible mechanisms are discussed for the observed Pt doping effect on structural and electrochemical properties of vanadium oxide cathode films, which are grown on I $n_2$ $O_3$: Sn coated glass.

  • The feasibility of using the thin film technology in utilizing lanthanum strontium manganite (LSM) for a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathode in a low-temperature regime is investigated in this study. Thin film LSM cathodes were fabricated using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on anode-supported SOFCs with yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes. Although cells with a 1 ${\mu}m$-thick LSM cathode showed poor low-temperature cell performance compared to that of a cell with a bulk-processed cathode due to the lack of a triple-phase boundary length, the cell with 200 nm-thick gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC) inserted between the LSM and YSZ showed enhanced performance and more stable operation characteristics in a comparison of a cell without a GDC layer. We postulate that the GDC layer likely improved the cathode adhesion, therefore contributing to the improvement of the cell performance instead of serving as an interfacial reaction buffer.

  • An anode-supported SOFC single cell having $5{\mu}m$ thin electrolyte was fabricated cost-effectively by tape casting, laminating, and co-filing of anode (NiO-YSZ), cathode (LSM-YSZ), and electrolyte (YSZ) components. The optimal slurry compositions of the green tapes for SOFC components were determined by an analysis of the mean diameter, the slurry viscosity, the tensile strength/strain of the green tapes, and their green microstructures. The single cells with a dense electrolyte and porous electrodes could be co-fired successfully at $1325\sim1350^{\circ}C$ by controlling the contents of pore former and the ratio of coarse YSZ and fine YSZ in the anode and the cathode. The single cell co-fired at $1350^{\circ}C$ showed $100.2mWcm^{-2}$ of maximum power density at $800^{\circ}C$ but it was impossible to apply it to operate at low temperature because of low performance and high ASR, which were attributed to formation of the secondary phases in the cathode and the interface between the electrolyte and the cathode.

  • Performance of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), in comparison with that under hydrogen fuel, were investigated under direct internal reforming conditions. Anode supported cells were fabricated with an Ni+YSZ anode, YSZ electrolyte, and LSM+YSZ cathode for the present work. Measurements of I-V curves and impedance were conducted with S/C (steam to carbon) ratio of ~ 2 at $800^{\circ}C$. The outlet gas was analyzed using gas chromatography under open circuit condition; the methane conversion rate was calculated and found to be ~ 90% in the case of low flow rate of methane and steam. Power density values were comparable for both cases (hydrogen fuel and internal steam reforming of methane), and in the latter case the cell performance was improved, with a decrease in the flow rate of methane with steam, because of the higher conversion rate. The present work indicates that the short-term performance of SOFCs with conventional Ni+YSZ anodes, in comparison with that under hydrogen fuel, is acceptable under internal reforming condition with the optimized fuel flow rate and S/C ratio.

  • The multi-component ceramic proton conductor, $BaZr(Y)O_3-SiO_2-TiO_2-ZrO_2$ (BZY-STZ) and $LaPO_4-SiO_2-TiO_2-ZrO_2$ (LP-STZ), were synthesized by micro-emersion and sol-gel technique. The characterization of proton conductors were carried out using X-ray diffraction(XRD), thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), differential thermal analysis(DTA), impedance analysis. The proton conductors indicate the possibility of application for the intermediate temperature up to $700^{\circ}C$.
